The Culver City Arts District and Arts District Residents Association are proud to present this year’s Art Walk and Roll Festival on Saturday, October 6th from 12-6pm. "The Festival will feature distinguished artists, live music, eclectic food trucks, wine and beer gardens, tastings, fun kid’s activities, interactive art experiences and so much more! Grab a map and take a self-guided stroll and visit our local galleries, restaurants and retail. Events will take place throughout Culver City Arts District, including our first ever designated street closure that stretches along the Arts District, (Washington Blvd will be closed between McManus and Caroline Ave). Visit established art galleries with special installations; explore the popup marketplace featuring arts and crafts vendors."

At Arcana we'll be hosting Zine-making workshops run by our friends at LA Zine Fest!  All workshops will include instruction on how to fold an 8-page zine. Scissors, glue, pens/writing implements, and magazines will be available for all participants at each workshop.

12:00-1:30 - “'This is a Photo Zine. Please bring photos and images, in any medium you prefer, to piece together your photo story in zine form. (Magazines will be on hand for those who forget their photos.) If you feel so inclined you can even bring some kind of instant film camera to take snaps during the workshop to also include in your zine."

2:30-4:00  - “'Grids and Gestures: A Diary Comic. Draw a comic, even if you have no prior drawing experience! The 'grids and gestures' technique, created by cartoonist Nick Sousanis, instructs participants to rely on drawing shapes and straight or scribbled lines in various ways to tell a story. You’ll use this technique to create a comic that tells stories about the maker’s week and the events within that time frame—a sort of diary comic. This technique is a great way to break through a creative rut or get over your fear of drawing!"

4:30–6:00 pm - "Going Home. This workshop is intended to explore through writing a personal notion of home as both a physical place and a feeling or state; and how a home can be altered, whether through the passage of time (as in, "You can't go home again"), neighborhood change, or the physical loss of a home.

Presented in partnership with @HelmsBakeryDistrict We will be offering the book for sale at the event tomorrow (and in the shop after tomorrow).

“Drawing on the format of the urban guidebook, Jennifer Bonner’s A Guide to the Dirty South―Atlanta generates a new discourse about the architecture of the American South. By guiding readers on a tour of Atlanta, this project seeks to reclaim a regional identity for cities otherwise deemed to be a "backwoods" by the East and West Coasts. Borrowing from the hip hop industry and recognising the rivalry between the two coasts, A Guide to the Dirty South―Atlanta acknowledges that amidst the NYC-LA rivalry, the South had its own story to tell, and redirects our attention to a ‘third coast’.

 Steeped in geography, historical events, typology, storytelling, and popular culture, the guide takes idiosyncratic trajectories through the city that urge a long overdue reading of Dirty South regionalism through architecture. Part tour guide, part architectural manual, the publication also features oral histories through a set of interviews with prominent architects, theorists, chefs, community leaders, and hip hop artists, from architectural historian Mario Carpo to hip-hop group Goodie Mob.

Authored by Jennifer Bonner, director of architecture studio MALL, A Guide to the Dirty South―Atlanta takes the reader on a tour of “Rap City”, “Pop up Surface Lots”, “Architecture of Quarantine” and a “Geography of Smells”. Wittily designed, and featuring beautiful illustrations throughout, A Guide to the Dirty South―Atlanta is perfect for those new to the architectural delights of Atlanta and long-time fans alike."

With a wink and a nod to the Velvet Underground's "All Tomorrow's Parties," artists Michah Hahn and Nicola Vruwink's installation at Arcana will explore hope, desire, longing, and relationships.

Presented with Bettina Hubby's  Curatorial Hub -- an online gallery featuring affordable and diverse work by well-known and emerging artists from Los Angeles and beyond. To complement its cyber-space-seat at curatorialhub.com, a exhibition series has launched at Arcana: Books on the Arts! The third show in the series will feature artists micah Hahn and Nicola Vruwink, with an opening reception on Sunday, September 9th from 4-6pm. 

 
These month long exhibitions at Arcana are cozy 2-person joints, curated in part by Curatorial Hub artists along with founder, Bettina Hubby. This partnership between Arcana and C⚡️H provides a space for artists to showcase their work, while also sparking conversation about the meaning of and the relationship between the physical and virtual worlds and how our lives now occupy both.
 

Please join us this Sunday (8/26), 4:30-6:30, for an intimate poetry reading and signing with Kate Parfet and Autre Magazine! Parfet’s collection of prose follows the sudden death of a lover that illumines for the speaker a new self, one that dares to be visible in the context of loss. The reading will be followed by a short Q&A and accompanied by refreshing libations courtesy of the wonderful Yola Mezcal and Gia Coppola Mood Wine!
