MAKING A PHOTOGRAPHER: THE EARLY WORK OF ANSEL ADAMS
(ADAMS, ANSEL). Senf, Rebecca A. Foreword by Anne Breckenridge Barrett. New Haven, CT & Tucson, AZ: Yale University Press in association with the Center for Creative Photography, 2020. First Edition. 4to. Pictorial Boards. Photography Monograph. As New/As New. 288pp, 175 color illustrations. "One of the most influential photographers of his generation, Ansel Adams (1902–1984) is famous for his dramatic photographs of the American West. Although many of Adams’s images are now iconic, his early work has remained largely unknown. In this first monograph dedicated to the beginnings of Adams’ career, Rebecca A. Senf argues that these early photographs are crucial to understanding Adams’ artistic development and offer new insights into many aspects of the artist’s mature oeuvre. Drawing on copious archival research, Senf traces the first three decades of Adams’s photographic practice - beginning with an amateur album made during his childhood and culminating with his Guggenheim-supported National Parks photography of the 1940s. Highlighting the artist’s persistence in forging a career path and his remarkable ability to learn from experience as he sharpened his image-making skills, this beautifully illustrated volume also looks at the significance of the artist’s environmentalism, including his involvement with the Sierra Club.
Rebecca A. Senf is chief curator at the Center for Creative Photography, University of Arizona. Anne Breckenridge Barrett is associate vice president for the arts at the University of Arizona and director of the Center for Creative Photography."

Through an assemblage of articles, criticism, and essays from 1967 to the present, this groundbreaking publication charts the reception of the photographer’s work and offers comprehensive insight into the critical conversations, as well as misconceptions, around this highly influential artist.
Best known for her penetrating images exploring what it means to be human, Diane Arbus is a pivotal and singular figure in American postwar photography. Arbus’s black-and-white photographs demolish aesthetic conventions and upend all certainties. Both lauded and criticized for her photographs of people deemed “outsiders,” Arbus continues to be a lightning rod for a wide range of opinions surrounding her subject matter and approach. Critics and writers have described her work as “sinister” and “appalling” as well as “revelatory,” “sincere,” and “compassionate.” Through an assemblage of articles, criticism, and essays from 1967 to the present, Diane Arbus Documents charts the reception of the revolutionary photographer's work.
Illuminating fifty years of evolution in the field of art criticism, Documents provides a new template for understanding the work of any formidable artist. Organized in eleven sections that focus on major exhibitions and significant events emerging from Arbus’s work, as well as on her methods and intentions, the sixty-nine facsimiles of previously published articles and essays––an archive by all accounts––trace the discourse on Arbus, contextualizing her inimitable oeuvre. Supplemented by an annotated bibliography of more than six hundred entries and a comprehensive exhibition history, Documents serves as an important resource for photographers, researchers, art historians, and art critics, in addition to students of art criticism and the interested reader alike.

EDGAR ARCENEAUX: 107TH STREET WATTS
(ARCENEAUX, EDGAR). Arceneaux, Edgar. Franklin Sirmans, Editor. Frankfurt am Main, GERMANY: Revolver Archiv fur Aktuelle Kunst, 2003. First Edition 1/1000. 8vo. Wrappers in Slipcase. Artist's Book. Fine/No Jacket - As Issued.. np + np (18 + 20pp), 1 b&w illustration. Text in English. "In his conceptual photography project "107th Street Watts", Edgar Arceneaux follows a desire to produce a number of strong visual counter-arcs to a relentlessly mediated social space, as well as a desire to ignite a critique of the narrow histories of Los Angeles' provocative past. Expanding the traditional subjects of Southern California artistic practice, the artist photographed an area of the world known through a singular event in its history: the Watts Riots of 1965. Performing the type of clinical overlay of the street in the manner of Ed Ruscha and his well-known 1966 mapping of the Sunset Strip, "107th Street Watts" formally mimics Ruscha's piece by shooting every building on 107th Street (the location of the historic Watts Towers) in a photomontage across one accordion-folded sheet, allowing for it to be opened and pulled completely out for an undisturbed viewing from end to end". Housed in the publisher's glossy white unprinted slipcase, there is a second, companion volume containing essays by Malik Charles Gaines, Lynell George and Vincent Johnson. A bright, most handsome example (featured on pages 74-75 of Jeffrey Brouws, Wendy Burton and Hermann Zschiegner's "Various Small Books: Referencing Various Small Books by Ed Ruscha") in the publisher's slipcase, as issued. 3-934823-82-3 Inventory Number: 027507

Designed by SMITH. "Outland" is the culmination of almost twenty years' work for artist-photographer Roger Ballen. After beginning in the early 1980s by documenting the small dorps (or villages) of rural South Africa, by the late 1980s and early 1990s Ballen moved on to photographing their inhabitants: isolated rural whites, scarred by history, in the process of losing the privileges of apartheid which had provided them livelihoods and sustained their identity for a generation. The results were shocking, both powerful social statements and disturbing psychological studies". A brand new, pristine example of the 2001 first printing (cited on page 124 of Martin Parr and Gerry Badger's "The Photobook: A History Volume III"). 0-7148-4058-0 Inventory Number: 023206

If you are knowingly searching for this title, could we add any more insight than the jacket description for "Boyhood"? While Ballen has subsequently become renowned for his sobering portrait images of the denizens of his adopted South Africa, this, his first book from 1979 is where it all began. The back cover features laudatory quotes from Andre Kertesz, Bruce Davidson, and Elliot Erwitt. A bright, most handsome example of the book itself whose neatly price-clipped dust jacket shows some very light wear and rubbing. 0-87754-091-8 Inventory Number: 018231

STEVE BANKS: NITRO, DRAG RACING IN THE SIXTIES: 1964-1966 - SIGNED, SLIPCASED LIMITED EDITION
(BANKS, STEVE). Banks, Steve. Paso Robles, CA: Nazraeli Press, 2019. First Edition 1/350. Small Folio. Cloth in Slipcase. Photography Monograph. As New/No Jacket - As Issued. np (60pp), 28 duotone illustrations.
np, profusely illustrated in tritone. "In 1964, a young Steve Banks bought one of the most coveted ‘Muscle Cars’ on the market - a Pontiac GTO with a four-speed stick and a Hurst shifter, Tri-Power, and three Rochester 2G carburetors. He then drove Route 66 from Chicago to Los Angeles to begin his new advertising agency job. Gassing up one day after arriving at Nobo’s Shell station at Beverly and Larchmont, Banks learned that Nobo had previously been head mechanic at the Courtesy Chevrolet dealership, and that his station had become a center for building and tuning street racers. On and off over the next few months, Banks would leave his car at the garage while Nobo fine-tuned the carburetors, replaced the stock tires, torsion, and sway bars, and added Koni shocks and a Sun tachometer. Next, he taught Banks how to ‘speed shift’ while making late night runs up and down Larchmont Boulevard. One day, Nobo mentioned he was going to a drag race that Saturday, and that Banks was welcome to come along. Witnessing his first drag race, Steve Banks was immediately hooked. He returned the following Saturday, and the next, and again the next; but this time with his cameras. Over the course of two years, Banks photographed guys preparing runs, the thundering nitro-burning dragsters launching down the strip at two hundred-plus miles per hour, and everything else that moved. Today, fifty years later, the sport of drag racing is a big bucks, corporate-sponsored television broadcast business with the NHRA sporting over two hundred different drag racing classes. However, in a nod to the sport’s modest beginnings, almost every weekend from coast-to-coast one can find "nostalgia racing" events preserving the dragster culture of the 1960s captured here in NITRO, Drag Racing In The Sixties: 1964-1966." A brand new, pristine specially-priced SIGNED AND SLIPCASED AP example of this stunning volume from the fourth and final set of the NZ Library editions limited to three hundred and fifty copies.

IAN BATES: MEADOWLARK
(BATES, IAN). Bates, Ian. With a poem by Jim Harrison. Los Angeles: Deadbeat Club Press, I00221000. 2022. First Edition 1/1000 Copies. 4to. Decorative Cloth. Photography Monograph. As New./No Jacket - As Issued. 96pp, profusely illustrated in color. Designed by Clint Woodside. "To make the pictures in Meadowlark, Ian Bates spent years driving the vast, sparsely-populated spaces of the American West, often sleeping in his car. This is a project born of both passion and patience, and though Bates was initially inspired by the Western Meadowlark - state bird of North Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, Oregon, Kansas, and Nebraska, sightings ultimately proved elusive, and it appears here only once, as a crude facsimile painted on a weathered scrap of plywood. It turns out there’s plenty of space out there for even birds to disappear. Bates’ photographs are full of things disappearing in plain sight; like all photos, they’re an imposition, but given the glorious anonymity of sprawling tracts of western and plains states geography, they’re also about respectful distance, and the space(s) between people, places, and things. These are places famous for keeping their secrets, and for maintaining a (long) arm’s reach from the outside world. A person drifting in such landscapes can never be entirely sure where they are, other than simultaneously on the outskirts of everything and in the thick of a perpetual and sublime (and very quiet) mystery. Every photographer is essentially exploring outer space, but in Meadowlark Bates is in deep space, and these are photos that are as reticent as their subjects. This world doesn’t much nurture silence, but it’s still out there, a stealth force, a glacier, and in the places it lives it can hear things coming from a long way away." A brand new, most handsome example of this exceptionally lovely volume. 978-1-952523-05-2
