MAKING A PHOTOGRAPHER: THE EARLY WORK OF ANSEL ADAMS
(ADAMS, ANSEL). Senf, Rebecca A. Foreword by Anne Breckenridge Barrett. New Haven, CT & Tucson, AZ: Yale University Press in association with the Center for Creative Photography, 2020. First Edition. 4to. Pictorial Boards. Photography Monograph. As New/As New. 288pp, 175 color illustrations. "One of the most influential photographers of his generation, Ansel Adams (1902–1984) is famous for his dramatic photographs of the American West. Although many of Adams’s images are now iconic, his early work has remained largely unknown. In this first monograph dedicated to the beginnings of Adams’ career, Rebecca A. Senf argues that these early photographs are crucial to understanding Adams’ artistic development and offer new insights into many aspects of the artist’s mature oeuvre. Drawing on copious archival research, Senf traces the first three decades of Adams’s photographic practice - beginning with an amateur album made during his childhood and culminating with his Guggenheim-supported National Parks photography of the 1940s. Highlighting the artist’s persistence in forging a career path and his remarkable ability to learn from experience as he sharpened his image-making skills, this beautifully illustrated volume also looks at the significance of the artist’s environmentalism, including his involvement with the Sierra Club.
Rebecca A. Senf is chief curator at the Center for Creative Photography, University of Arizona. Anne Breckenridge Barrett is associate vice president for the arts at the University of Arizona and director of the Center for Creative Photography."

FLARE MAGAZINE PRESENTS MADE IN CANADA: PHOTOGRAPHS BY BRYAN ADAMS - SIGNED BY THE PHOTOGRAPHER
(ADAMS, BRYAN). Adams, Bryan. Foreword by Margaret Atwood. Toronto, CANADA: Key Porter Books, 1999. First Edition (Second Printing). 4to. Pictorial Self-Wrappers. Photography Monograph. Fine.. np, profusely illustrated in b&w. "In some ways, this book started when Flare magazine published my photograph of model Linda Evangelista in 1998, promoting a concert she and I were co-sponsoring to raise money for a breast cancer screening clinic in St. Catharine's, Ontario. Previously, I had recorded some music for a CD and performed at a concert in Los Angeles both for breast cancer research, so the idea of continuing to raise awareness was forefront in my mind. I approached Flare with the idea of continuing to promote awareness, hence this book. I am extremely grateful to all those who gave both time and money to help make each photo happen and especially to all the women photographed here who were Made in Canada". This book of musician and photographer Bryan Adams' images of inspiring Canadian women includes portraits of Margaret Atwood - who contributed the foreword, Shalom Harlow, Kim Cattrall, Catherine O'Hara, Margaret Trudeau, Sarah McLachlan, Joni Mitchell, Silken Laumann, Natalie and Nicole Appleton, Alison Sydor, Shannon Tweed, Carolyn Waldo, Jane Sibbery, Eve Salvail, Floria Sigismondi, Dayle Haddon, K.D. JESSICA ANTOLA: CIRCADIAN LANDSCAPE - SIGNED BY THE PHOTOGRAPHER
(ANTOLA, JESSICA). Antola, Jessica. Bologna, ITALY: Damiani Editore, 2018. First Edition. 4to. Cloth in Pictorial Dust Jacket. Photography Monograph. As New/As New.
Jessica Antola’s first monograph entitled Circadian Landscape is a vibrant journey through Sub-Saharan Africa. Traveling mostly by car, she captures the distinctive style and beauty of everyday life in Benin, Burkina Faso, Cote d'Ivoire, Ghana, Ethiopia, Senegal, and Togo. Her striking portraits, landscapes, and vignettes offer an intimate view of life lived in rural villages, big cities and along the remote roadways between the two. Men dressed head to toe in elaborate African wax textiles share a motorcycle; ancestral spirits bridge earthly and supernatural worlds in masked dances; the rich red soil dusts the lush tropical jungle; a girl in an over-sized straw hat steers her boat with a boldly patterned patchwork sail; and a gold jewelry-clad Kumasi King performs a warrior dance.
Antola is captivated by how people around the world express themselves in relation to their environments, and her images reflect the astonishing variety of ways people create and define themselves daily through dress and ritual, work and play.
PLEASE NOTE: Copies of "Circadian Landscapes" will be signed by Ms. Antola will be signing books at Arcana on Saturday April 21st and shipped beginning Tuesday, April 24th. If you would like to pre-order a signed copy and collect it at the event, please indicate this in the "notes" section of your order.

MAUDE ARSENAULT: ENTANGLED
(ARSENAULT, MAUDE). Deadbeat Club, I00200430, 2020. 9.4 x 12.25 in.. Paperback. New/No Jacket - As Issued.
Maude Arsenault’s Entangled encapsulates a pivotal moment for her work, representing a shift in perspective and personal responsibility. “After years dedicated to creating glorified images of women,” she says of her success in fashion photography, “I came to question my role and influence in the transmission of models of femininity.” Albeit informed by a progressive, non-binary upbringing, this introspection is ultimately necessary now – in the context of motherhood as she raises three children including a young woman.
When speaking about Entangled, Arsenault invokes the French word carcan – meaning “ploy,” or “ambush,” or “ideological trap” – to explain the underlying motivation for making the spare and evocative pictures in this debut monograph. By which she means that becoming an adult and a parent have given her distance and perspective on the cultural demands made on the bodies and societal roles of young women, and particularly on life choices which have been constricted or even foreordained. Arsenault calls the work “a poem, an ode, a shout out,” and one senses that the quiet power of the book lies in contradictions still unresolved even as the author gains in experience and independence. “I feel often trapped in the person I have been trying to be my entire life,” she says in a touching and revealing statement, one that perfectly echoes the finely calibrated tensions and the tentative triumphs evoked in these pages. “Now I stand, shaky but alive, looking away at my world as a female with the best possible hope.”
