Tove Jansson: The Illustrators by Paul Gravett
(JANSSON, TOVE). Paul Gravett. Thames & Hudson, I00221212, 2022. 7.6 in x 10 in x 0.7 in. Hardcover. New.
This book provides fresh insight into and a deep appreciation of the life and art of Tove Jansson, one of the most original, influential, and perennially enjoyed illustrators of the twentieth century. In this volume Paul Gravett examines Jansson’s highly successful Moomin books, as well as her interpretations of classics such as Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and The Hunting of the Snark, and J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit.
Born in Helsinki among Finland’s Swedish-speaking minority, Jansson was brought up with a love for making art and stories in a supportive, artistic family. Her first illustrated tales were published when she was fourteen years old and she went on to draw humorous and political cartoons as well as striking front covers for the satirical magazine Garm, in response to events in World War II. As she developed from art student to painter and muralist, and from bohemian to lesbian, she also created her Moomin world, which appeared in her first children’s book in 1945 and then in newspaper strips. Beyond this imaginative achievement, Jansson also wrote many novels, documented here along with personal commentaries from her own writings.
A title in The Illustrators series, which celebrates illustration as an art form, Tove Jansson offers a visually rich view into the life and work of this much-loved artist and writer.

How do you find a book when you can't recall the title…or the author? This homage to a common reader's dilemma is a gift the booklover in your life won't soon forget.
Readers know all too well the comedy and tragedy of forgetting the name of a must-find book. Inspired by this torturous predicament, artist Marina Luz creates paintings of books based on the descriptions we use when we can't remember their titles—mining Internet book-search forums for the quirky, vague, and often hilarious language we come up with in these moments. This volume collects dozens of these imaginary books into a library all their own: Titles like "Cat, Possibly Named Henry," "It Was All a Dream," or "Something-Something, Beverly Hills" inspire dreaming up their contents, often as entertaining as trying to guess the real book behind them. A celebration of book love unlike any other, this petite book is a clever gift for bibliophiles that will spark knowing smiles.
Marina Luz is an award-winning illustrator whose work has appeared in the New York Times, Vice, and ProPublica, among other publications. She runs her illustration and design studio Honeylux out of Oakland, California. She found these descriptions during her own search for a forgotten book, Iceberg Shows Up Overnight in Front of Hotel.

PIRATES, BATS, AND DRAGONS: A SCIENCE ADVENTURE
(SIMPSON, WILLIAM). Davis, Mike. Viggo Mortenson & Pilar Perez, Editors. Santa Monica, CA: Perceval Press, 2004. First Edition. 8vo. Illustrated Boards. Illustrated Book. As New/No Jacket - As Issued. 178pp, illustrated in b&w. Designed by Michele Perez. MacArthur fellow Mike Davis is the author of several books including "City of Quartz", "Dead Cities: And Other Tales", and "Ecology of Fear". In this, his second book of fiction intended for young adults (published by Viggo Mortensen) "Jack, Conor, and Julia (the young heroes of "The Land of the Lost Mammoths") join a United Nations research team reconnoitering the vast limestone caverns under Socotra. Described by Marco Polo as the "most enchanted land on earth," Socotra is legendary for its witches and latter-day pirates. Its ancient people live in high mountains forested with dragon's blood trees, frankincense, and myrrh. They speak a unique language, live in caves, and are believed to be partly descended from settlers sent by Alexander the Great. They also tell unsettling tales of "dragons" that live beneath the earth. But Socotra is also caught up in the whirlwinds of international intrigue and the "war against terrorism." The kids' scientific mission (led by Julia's advisor, Dr. Hasan) is shadowed from the beginning by the ominous Colonel Strong and his Delta Force commandos, as well as by warnings of the notorious pirate Kaitos. After a terrifying attack by carnivorous crabs, the threesome seek shelter with a beautiful witch, Tatra, who warns them of an approaching horror almost beyond imagination. A secret U.S. anti-terrorist operation goes disastrously wrong when Kaitos (Tatra's brother) captures a doomsday cargo that could threaten the entire world. Jack and Dr. Hasan are captured by the pirates, while Conor and Julia (and her fearless pet civet) are marooned in a cave full of bats and huge but unknown predators. As in The Land of the Lost Mammoths, the ultimate drama is the moral choice the team must make: they must risk their own survival for the sake of truth and nonviolence. In a stunning final confrontation, the three young scientists and their friends battle not only sharks and dragons, but also an entire world of official deception". It is illustrated throughout by William Simpson. A brand new, pristine example of the first printing still in the publisher's shrinkwrap. 0-9747078-2-1 Inventory Number: 009812$15.95 Inquire

"ENGINEERS LIFE ON THE M.V. DALERDIJK" - A UNIQUE MID-CENTURY ALBUM OF A CREWMAN'S ORIGINAL DRAWINGS FROM THE VOYAGE OF A HOLLAND AMERICA LINER
Author Not Stated. NP. ND (Circa 1950).: Self-Published. Edition Not Stated - Presumed First. 8vo. Wrappers with a Twine Tie. Travel Album. Good./No Jacket - As Issued. np (32pp), 16 individual 5 x 7 ¼" hand-drawn illustrations in ink on heavy paper stock + 1 hand-drawn cover illustration. Text in English and Dutch. In a protective clear acetate dustwrapper. "Engineers Life On The M.V. Dalerdijk" is a unique handmade book consisting of sixteen charming original ink on paper illustrations documenting a voyage from Rotterdam to Cristobal, Panama and Los Angeles by a crew member of the Holland America Lines Cargo-Passenger Liner. The otherwise unidentified author was a talented amateur artist that documented scenes from his daily life onboard and while on shore leave between The Netherlands, South America, and the US. Built and originally named the Damsterdijk in 1930, after various vicissitudes during WW II the ship was reconditioned and renamed the M.V. Dalerdijk in 1949. By the early fifties the liner's name was anglicized as the M.V. Dalerdyk, so this original manuscript would have been created sometime between 1949 and 1953. Its caricature-like drawings - executed in a style not dissimilar to that of H.C. Westermann - are captioned: 1. "Wacht Der Honden", 2. "Pin Up Boy", 3. "Panama Nights", 4. "Breakfast", 5. "Officers Sundeck", 6. "Lunch", 7. "Officer!!!", 8. "No Diving", 9. "No Diving", 10. "Dinner", 11. "No Boys, Staff Only", 12. "Bridge", 13. "Krakken Loden", 14. "Kegel Club", 15. "Haar Debois", and 16. "Dalerdijk"; and inserted loosely into the diagonal corner cuts of photo album pages that have been hand bound at the spine with knotted twine. Written on the inside the rear cover in the artist's hand is "Index: How an Engineer Spent a Day" where the numbered plates are attributed to "At Sea", "In Cristobal", "In Los Angeles", "Any Other Port", and/or "Dalerdijk." On the inside front cover is the name and pre-Zip Code Los Angeles address of a previous owner we do not believe to be the author. An internally most handsome example of this fascinating object whose brittle, highly-acidic cardstock covers show some dampstaining and soiling along with browning, creasing, and chipping with attendant paper loss along the extruded edges.
