TOM ADLER: EXHIBITION POSTER FOR "PAIRS" - SIGNED BY THE DESIGNER
(ADLER, TOM). Adler, Tom. Santa Barbara, CA & New York: T. Adler & Danziger Projects, 2002. First Edition 1/500. Oblong 4to. Printed Poster. Exhibition Announcement. Fine.. One 10 x 15" white cardstock sheet printed offset and letterpress recto only, 1 color illustration. Designed and printed by noted Santa Barbara graphic designer and publisher Tom Adler, this is the small poster issued to publicize his 2002 exhibition at Danziger Projects in New York that featured a then-new selection of Adler's own works comprising photographs he had worked with in his career in fashion and surf editorial edited and reproduced as paired images hung on the gallery walls. The amalgam of anonymous and vernacular seaside studies abutting the likes of Don James and Tom Blake's historical views from the shore produced a joyous and sophisticated body of work, which has yet to be reproduced in book form. A brand new, bright white example of this uncommon, elegant object limited to five hundred copies individually NUMBERED by rubber stamp that has been additionally BOLDLY SIGNED "Tom Adler" for us in black ink across the lower right margin. These were produced hors commerce - never commercially for sale - and sadly only a handful were ever distributed. Inventory Number: 026275

FLOWER ART: MAKOTO AZUMA
(AZUMA, MAKOTO). Thames and Hudson, I00201203, 2020. 9 x 12 in., 240 pages. Hardbound. New/No Jacket - As Issued.
The art of Makoto Azuma uses flowers and plants as its starting point, but juxtaposes their timeless yet transient beauty with an incredibly diverse range of striking settings. In a series of sculptures, installations and interactive events, he delights in blurring the boundaries between nature and artifice.
Azuma founded the floral atelier Jardins des Fleurs in 2002, taking commissions from private clients as well as brands and corporations, both in Japan and all over the world. His parallel career as an artist began in 2005 and involves creating and exhibiting artworks that turn flowers and plants into a medium for self-expression. In 2008, Azuma founded AMKK (Azuma Makoto Kaju Kenkyujo), a group specializing in experimental floral creation, with the aim of seeking new forms of botanical beauty and new ways to exhibit them. His works have travelled the globe, from barren deserts to frozen expanses, from thousands of feet below the sea to the very edge of space. Featuring more than sixty projects captured in breathtaking photography, this beautiful book is the most comprehensive showcase of Azuma’s art ever published. 9780500210291 Inventory Number: I00201203 -

BLACK MOON
(BURKE, TRICIA-NOËL). Self-Published, I00201023, 2020. 12 x 10 in., 110 pages. Hardbound. New/No Jacket - As Issued.
In the year 2020, we are bearing witness to over 40 million jobs lost. Over 100 thousands lives lost. A viral and racial pandemic across the globe. Far beneath the devastation lies a transformational future that could be unfolding faster than we think.
Since the age of ancient Native American tribes, each full moon was an opportunity to set intentions for the next cycle, establish fresh goals, or conduct rituals that wipe the slate clean. Much like the microevolutionary process of our lives, this magical ball of light piercing the night sky is a mother icon of constant change and cyclical patterns.
One of the most powerful celestial phenomenons is the rare Black Moon. A second new moon that occurs within one calendrical month. It is said that the Black Moon amplifies a cleansing energy, dragging our deepest strengths and desires to the forefront, uninhibited. Just like the dark side of the moon, there is a side to each of us that we don’t reveal to others.
Mirroring a lunar experience in contemporary dance form, this book is a collection of inspirational messages and some of the most vulnerable stories revealed by women from around the world.
2020. This is Black Moon. 9780578562230 Inventory Number: I00201023 -

CHILDS NEW YORK RESTAURANT: A GROUP OF THREE LAVISHLY PRODUCED 1930 PROJECT DOCUMENTATION ALBUMS FROM PRUITT & BROWN ARCHITECTS
(CHILDS RESTAURANT). Pruitt & Brown Architects. New York: Pruitt & Brown Architects, 1930. First Editions. Folio. Gilt-Stamped Buckram. Architecture Monographs. Near Fine/No Jackets - As Issued. 36pp + 48pp + 72pp, each profusely illustrated with original 7 ¼ x 9 ½" photographs and contemporary publication clippings. In protective clear acetate dustwrappers. This is a group of three unique, lavishly hand-assembled 14 x 12 ½" project documentation books produced in 1930 by Pruitt & Brown Architects to showcase their design work for recently opened showpieces for the Childs Restaurant chain. Founded in New York in the 1880s, Childs became one of the first national dining chains, with over one hundred venues at its height. The firm's ownership changed hands just as the US slipped into the Great Depression, and Childs optimistically opened a series of elegant Manhattan dining establishments each differentiated by a distinct architectural theme presented as if one were stepping onto a glamorous Hollywood back lot set. These hefty volumes have been produced in the manner of a scrapbook with original sepia-toned silver gelatin photographs by Peyser & Patzig affixed to thick linen-hinged pages throughout liberally supplemented by menus, correspondence, and newspaper, magazine, and press coverage of the projects. The first is devoted to the Childs Restaurant at 425 Lexington Avenue which was a jaw-dropping showpiece of Art Deco elegance. The second covers Childs "Old England" at 9 East 40th Street, which presented a Robin Hood-like décor. The third - and most comprehensive of these books - details William Child's "Old Algiers" at 102nd Street and Broadway, which simulated an exotic night at the Kasbah. The three are bound in differing hues of buckram over boards with a still-bright gilt-stamped titles on their front covers and spines. Each is internally Fine, and bears a typed label on the inside front board that noted the volume was issued by the Pruitt & Brown Architects office at 342 Madison Avenue for use at the firm's Charlottesville, VA office. The exteriors show varying degrees of wear, rubbing, and some light discoloration, but are still sound and in no way detract from the remarkable contents. These are stunning, near-unique documents of another time, place, and dining experience that must be seen in hand to be fully appreciated. Inventory Number: 026957

DORA LIVES: THE AUTHORIZED STORY OF MIKI DORA - THE DELUXE BOXED ESTATE-STAMPED EDITION OF FIVE HUNDRED COPIES WITH A 5 X 7" PHOTOGRAPH
(DORA, MIKI "MICKEY"). Kampion, Drew & Craig Stecyk III. Foreword By Steve Pezman. Tom Adler, Editor. Santa Barbara, CA: T. Adler Books, 2005. First Edition 1/500 Deluxe. Small Oblong 4to. 1/4 Cloth Over Boards in Box. Photography Monograph. As New/As New. 137pp, profusely illustrated in color and b&w. Designed by Tom Adler. With the 2002 passing of Miki "Da Cat" Dora, the surfing world lost one of its most talented, charismatic, and controversial innovators. A legend of Malibu lore since the late '50s, Dora helped to create and simultaneously revile the "Gidget"/"Beach Party" California surfing explosion of the '60s, then turned his back to the 'Bu and the world of competitive wave riding to travel the world, often just a step or two ahead of law. Initiated by Miki Dora himself, this loving tribute to the legendary enigma by noted designer/art director/publisher/surfing aficionado Tom Adler is very much in the same vein as Adler's previous deluxe editions on Don James and Tom Blake. It reproduces vintage images and screen captures of Dora by Joe Quigg, Leroy Grannis, Grant Rohloff, Don James, Pat Darrin, Peter Gowland and many others along with biographical texts by Drew Kampion, Craig Stecyk III and Steve Pezman; transcribed interviews, ramblings, and reprinted writings from "Surfer" magazine (including the full "Million Days to Darkness" from 1989!) in an elegantly produced package that was authorized by Miki's family and estate. A brand new, pristine example in the publisher's shrinkwrap of the deluxe edition limited to five hundred copies in a pictorial sliding box that includes a 5 x 7" Lambda print of Dora in action taken from a film by Grant Rohloff, NUMBERED AND SIGNED by Tom Adler with the stamp of the Mickey Dora estate on the rear colophon, as issued. 1-890481-18-1 Inventory Number: 021107

(DORA, MIKI "MICKEY"). Kampion, Drew & Craig Stecyk III. Foreword By Steve Pezman. Tom Adler, Editor. Santa Barbara, CA: T. Adler Books, 2005. First Edition. Small Oblong 4to. 1/4 Cloth Over Boards. Photography Monograph. As New/No Jacket - As Issued. It reproduces vintage images and screen captures of Dora by Joe Quigg, Leroy Grannis, Grant Rohloff, Don James, Pat Darrin, Peter Gowland and many others along with biographical texts by Drew Kampion, Craig Stecyk III & Steve Pezman; transcribed interviews, ramblings, and reprinted writings from "Surfer" magazine (including the full "Million Days to Darkness" from 1989!) in an elegantly produced package that was authorized by Miki's family and estate. A brand new, pristine example still in the publisher's shrinkwrap. 1-890481-17-3 Inventory Number: 014864

"FABULOUS" FINOCCHIO'S: A SOUVENIR MAILER FROM SAN FRANCISCO'S HOME TO "THE WORLD'S MOST FAMOUS AND TALENTED FEMALE IMPERSONATORS" + THREE PHOTOGRAPHS OF PERFORMER "THE FABULOUS LEE LEONARD"
(FINOCCHIO'S). Finocchio's. San Francisco, CA. ND (Circa Early 1960s): Finocchio's. Edition Not Stated. 4to. Various Printed Materials. Nightclub Souvenirs. Near Fine.. One 7 x 11 ½" heavy textured paper sheet printed offset recto and verso, machine-folded in half vertically to make 4pp, 2 illustrations + three glossy single-weight 10 x 8" photographs. This is a group of four items related to "Fabulous" Finocchio's, the legendary San Francisco bar and club that opened at 506 Broadway in 1929. Owned and run by Joe Finocchio, the cabaret was billed as home to "The World's Most Famous and Talented Female Impersonators", and was a Bay Area gay mainstay that operated for an astonishing seventy years until its closing in 1999. The first item is a jaunty "mailing souvenir" brochure likely from the early sixties with an Art Deco-inspired cover whose interior contains a black and white image of the female impersonators - heavily favoring Joan Crawford and Bette Davis - from the club's then-current review produced by well-known local drag artist Lestra La Monte along with a prosaic if not hyperbolic text. This is accompanied by three 10 x 8" headshot photographs of frequent Finocchio's performer "The Fabulous Lee Leonard" - who can be seen in the brochure's cast photo. A well-preserved and interesting gathering of items from this important and influential early LGBTQ venue. Inventory Number: 026965

Soviet Signs and Street Relics
(GUILBEAU, JASON) Edited by Damon Murray, Stephen Sorrell. Fuel, I00200711, 2020. 8 x 7 in., 192 pages. New/No Jacket - As Issued.
Russia’s forgotten world of avant-garde public signage—the latest in Fuel’s collectible Soviet series
For this volume, French photographer Jason Guilbeau has used Google Street View to virtually navigate Russia and the former USSR, searching for examples of a forgotten Soviet empire. The subjects of these unlikely photographs are incidental to the purpose of Google Street View—captured by serendipity, rather than design, they are accorded a common vernacular. Once found, Guilbeau strips the images of their practical use by removing the navigational markers, transforming them according to his own vision.
From remote rural roadsides to densely populated cities, the photographs reveal traces of history in plain sight: a brutalist hammer and sickle stands in a remote field; a jet fighter is anchored to the ground by its concrete exhaust plume; a skeletal tractor sits on a cast-iron platform; a village sign resembles a constructivist sculpture. Passersby seem oblivious to these objects. Relinquished by the present they have become part of the composition of everyday life, too distant in time and too ubiquitous in nature to be recorded by anything other than an indiscriminate automaton.
This collection of photographs portrays a surreal reality: it is a document of a vanishing era, captured by an omniscient technology that is continually deleting and replenishing itself—an inadvertent definition of Russia today. 9781916218406 Inventory Number: I00200711 -

He first became prominent as a film producer, and then as an influential figure in the aviation industry." EPI-HAB Inc. was founded in 1958 as a non-profit organization with the mission to provide meaningful employment to individuals with epilepsy by performing valued work for customers. On February 19th 1977, the Los Angeles chapter of the organization produced a posthumous, celebrity-studded "tribute Ball for Howard Hughes" at The Century Plaza Hotel to celebrate the life and accomplishments of Howard Hughes.
