    JACKY ICKX

(ICKX, JACKY). Van Vliet, Pierre. Introduction by Jacky Ickx. Foreword by Eddie Merckx. Gottingen, GERMANY: Cannibal Publishers, 2012. First Edition. 4to. Pictorial Boards. Auto Racing Monograph. Fine/No Jacket - As Issued. 242pp, profusely illustrated in color and duotone. Text in English. "Jacky Ickx has been to the front and back. Miraculously, he survived a period in which death lurked behind every corner, like when his Ferrari caught fire in 1970 during a race in Jarama. Jacky Ickx's career is one of the richest in the history of racing: two-time vice-world champion Formula 1, winner of eight grands prix, six-time winner of the 24 hours of Le Mans, two-time world endurance champion with victories in the Paris-Dakar Rally and the American Can Am-championship. This book presents the twenty-four defining moments of Ickx' career, illustrated with exclusive photography from the best archives and photo collections in the world". Long retired, Jacky Ickx is widely regarded as the greatest Belgian F1 and sports car driver of the twentieth century, and this lavish book - which includes his own introduction along with a foreword by legendary Belgian cycling champion Eddie Merckx - authored by noted motorsports journalist Pierre Van Vliet is a fitting tribute. A bright, most handsome example of the uncommon 2012 English language edition. 9-49137-614-4 Inventory Number: 024513

    RACE HATRED ON TRIAL

(WALKER, RYAN). Communist Party of the United States of America. Foreword by Jim Allen. New York: Daily Worker Publishing Company, 1931. First Edition. 12mo. Stapled Illustrated Wrappers. Civil Rights Document. Good -.. 48pp, 3 b&w illustrations + cover illustration. In a protective clear acetate dustwrapper. According to this publication's authors, "The trial of August Yokinen before 1,500 white and black workers in Harlem for acts clearly based on race prejudice was an event without example in the history of the American Labor Movement. He was not tried before any court of American ruling-class "justice." He was tried by a court of workers." Written and published by The Communist Party of the United States of America, "Race Hatred on Trial" is the transcript and summation of the 1931 Party-sponsored adjudication of Mr. Yokinen for his inhospitable treatment of three Negro workers attending a Finnish Workers Club entertainment in Harlem. As prefaced here, "the seriousness of the crime he committed against the working class is made clear in this pamphlet." To atone for his transgressions following the tribunal's guilty verdict, Yokinen was immediately expelled from the Communist Party and required to "actively participate in the struggle against white chauvinism throughout Harlem." An internally most presentable example of the uncommon 1931 first edition of this notable pre-World War II contribution to civil rights literature that includes four illustrations by leftist American political activist and cartoonist Ryan Walker showing pronounced wear, creasing, chipping, soiling, and minor paper loss to the extremities of its brittle newsprint covers; which appear to have at one point detached along the spine and been subsequently semi-artfully re-attached. It has been priced accordingly. Inventory Number: 026735

A PICTORIAL HISTORY OF THE PASADENA DOO-DAH PARADE

Apanel, Peter, Editor. Pasadena, CA: The Pasadena Doo-Dah Parade, 1982. First Edition. 4to. Stapled Illustrated Wrappers. Civic History. Near Fine.. np (28pp), profusely illustrated in b&w. Lovingly produced on a shoestring budget, this is the officially published 1982 celebration of the first five years of The Pasadena Doo-Dah Parade. Known as "the twisted sister of the Tournament of Roses Parade", the "Occasional Pasadena Doo Dah Parade" began as a grassroots event in 1978 that immediately gained national attention for its eccentric and irreverent satire. Initially populated by local iconoclasts and Cal Tech students - a highly overlapping Venn diagram right there - it has now poked Monty Python-esque fun at it's elder and much more staid annual civic celebration for over forty years. Featuring a cover artwork by Rev. Dr. R.C. "Spike" Love, it has "lots of photos" of the earliest festivities by Maury Cohen, Michael Kundak, Walt Mancini, Joe Messinger, Mitch Mitchener, Robin Muller, and Margaret Schermerhorn. Amusingly enough, virtually all of its few paid advertisements are from breweries and beer distributors. A handsome example of this charming, exceedingly uncommon document - only a single copy fittingly enough located at The Pasadena Public Library is currently cited in OCLC WorldCat - showing just a bit of light soiling to its white covers. "ENGINEERS LIFE ON THE M.V. DALERDIJK" - A UNIQUE MID-CENTURY ALBUM OF A CREWMAN'S ORIGINAL DRAWINGS FROM THE VOYAGE OF A HOLLAND AMERICA LINER

Author Not Stated. NP. ND (Circa 1950).: Self-Published. Edition Not Stated - Presumed First. 8vo. Wrappers with a Twine Tie. Travel Album. Good./No Jacket - As Issued. np (32pp), 16 individual 5 x 7 ¼" hand-drawn illustrations in ink on heavy paper stock + 1 hand-drawn cover illustration. Text in English and Dutch. In a protective clear acetate dustwrapper. "Engineers Life On The M.V. Dalerdijk" is a unique handmade book consisting of sixteen charming original ink on paper illustrations documenting a voyage from Rotterdam to Cristobal, Panama and Los Angeles by a crew member of the Holland America Lines Cargo-Passenger Liner. The otherwise unidentified author was a talented amateur artist that documented scenes from his daily life onboard and while on shore leave between The Netherlands, South America, and the US. Built and originally named the Damsterdijk in 1930, after various vicissitudes during WW II the ship was reconditioned and renamed the M.V. Dalerdijk in 1949. By the early fifties the liner's name was anglicized as the M.V. Dalerdyk, so this original manuscript would have been created sometime between 1949 and 1953. Its caricature-like drawings - executed in a style not dissimilar to that of H.C. Westermann - are captioned: 1. "Wacht Der Honden", 2. "Pin Up Boy", 3. "Panama Nights", 4. "Breakfast", 5. "Officers Sundeck", 6. "Lunch", 7. "Officer!!!", 8. "No Diving", 9. "No Diving", 10. "Dinner", 11. "No Boys, Staff Only", 12. "Bridge", 13. "Krakken Loden", 14. "Kegel Club", 15. "Haar Debois", and 16. "Dalerdijk"; and inserted loosely into the diagonal corner cuts of photo album pages that have been hand bound at the spine with knotted twine. Written on the inside the rear cover in the artist's hand is "Index: How an Engineer Spent a Day" where the numbered plates are attributed to "At Sea", "In Cristobal", "In Los Angeles", "Any Other Port", and/or "Dalerdijk." On the inside front cover is the name and pre-Zip Code Los Angeles address of a previous owner we do not believe to be the author. An internally most handsome example of this fascinating object whose brittle, highly-acidic cardstock covers show some dampstaining and soiling along with browning, creasing, and chipping with attendant paper loss along the extruded edges.
