This is the iconic poster designed by the late, great British illustrator Alan Aldridge to promote the 1970 screening of "Chelsea Girls" at the Drury Lane Arts Laboratory. Filmed by Andy Warhol and Paul Morrissey from a treatment by Ronnie Tavel on location inside Manhattan's fabled Chelsea Hotel, the film received upon its 1966 release an X certificate from the British Board of Film Censors, meaning it was unable to be theatrically released in the UK. It took another three years before the full three and a half hour split-screen version of "Chelsea Girls" - featuring Factory Superstars Nico, Brigid Berlin, Ondine, Gerard Malanga, Eric Emerson, Mary Woronov, Mario Montez, Ingrid Superstar, and International Velvet - would receive a London premiere. The show presented preparatory materials generated for the artist's proposed wrapping of MoMA - a project that was ultimately abandoned due to safety and liability concerns. States the Museum's contemporaneous press release ""As an artist functioning more in the realm of 'events' than in that of painting and sculpture, it is not surprising that Christo should have dreamed that it was time to wrap up the Museum, and for that matter the trees, the sculptures, and even some of the spectators in its garden. The Museum staff found this a potentially lively and poetically strange project. But the more practical heads of the fire department, police department, and insurance agencies prevailed. Nevertheless, we felt that our public would enjoy seeing the models, photomontages, and drawings that Christo had prepared as sketches for this event, an event that was to have signaled the closing of the exhibition "Dada, Surrealism, and Their Heritage". Seagram and Sons, Inc. commissioned twenty-four photographers to record more than one thousand County Court houses across the country using both color and black and white film. The project, directed by Phyllis Lambert and edited by Richard Pare, created the then-most comprehensive survey of an American building type. The Seagram County Court House Archives collection of photographic negatives and master prints was ultimately presented as a gift, with its copyright ownership, to the Library of Congress. In 1978 Horizon published the lovely Richard Pare-edited book of images from this undertaking entitled "Court House: A Photographic Document". Dated August 12, 1983, it offers "In return for your participation, HUSTLER will pay you $10,000.00 plus expenses." The letter was sent to Mr. Robert DeNiro (sic) in care of his longtime agent Harry J. Ufland, but whether or not there was a response on his behalf, no such pictorial ever appeared. Using a monologue from Martin Scorsese's "Taxi Driver", Gordon traps the viewer between two images of Travis Bickle, one 'real' and the other a 'reflection of the real'. The projections appear at first to be mirror images of one another but they quickly trip out of sync and into a manic dialogue which bounces around the gallery, both visually and audibly".
