This vivid memoir of a man described as “one of America’s greatest songwriters” by Elvis Costello, and a cat that was “fly, sly, wily, and dry” by Tom Waits. Dan Hicks had a front-row seat to the birth and death of counter culture -- San Francisco, 1966 -- it would affect both him and his music.
"I Scare Myself" captures the highs and lows of a lifelong adventure in music. You’ll get to see Hicks’ memories of one of the changes the sixties brought, working with great musicians, plus, a foreword by Elvis Costello, afterword by producer Tommy LiPuma, and annotations by his close friend Kristine McKenna.
“I just started taking ingredients I liked and putting them together to see what came out,” Hicks writes. What came out was an amazing blend of complex time signatures, unusual instrumentation, and intricate vocal harmonies that took him to the top of the 70s rock world but also into a downward spiral of drink and drug abuse.
Hicks passed away in early 2016, but his music, and the stories he tells here, remain as fresh and irresistible as ever. I Scare Myself takes readers on a journey behind the music, and into the life and mind of the fantastic artist who created it.
PLEASE NOTE: Books will be signed by Ms. McKenna on June 18th, and posted starting Tuesday, June 20th.

AMERICAN PITBULL: PHOTOGRAPHS BY MARC JOSEPH
(JOSEPH, MARC). Joseph, Marc & James Frey. Interviews by Cory Reynolds. Carol LeFlufy, Editor. Gottingen, GERMANY: Steidl, 2003. First Edition. 4to. Boards with Pastedown. Photography Monograph. Fine/No Jacket - As Issued. 248pp, profusely illustrated in color. Designed by Gerhard Steidl, Marc Joseph and Claas Moller. Text in English. "American Pitbull" is a photographic exploration into the culture of American Pit Bull dogs and their people, presenting an alternative view of the controversial world revolving around a uniquely American breed of dog and the human beings that live for them. Over a three-year period photographer Marc Joseph traveled the United States photographing Pit Bull dogs, their owners, breeders and "old time dog men," at their homes and yards, and during various events related to the breed. The relationships formed with his subjects have helped Joseph to gain full access to a culture known by few outside of their specific community. The fanatical, almost religious devotion that Pit Bull people attribute to their breed is clearly portrayed in Joseph's pictures. Issues of identity are addressed through elements of image, race, pride, and background, while the photographs simultaneously serve to further an understanding of our perceptions of unconditional love, beauty, danger, and strength. Themes of family and shelter are prominent; throughout the series a cast of characters emerges, themselves defining the context of the book. From the elder-statesmen of the Pit Bull world in New England and the Southern United States such as Louis B. Colby and Floyd Boudreaux, to new-school giants the Hip-Hop music scene on the East and West coasts, such as Big Boi from Outkast, and DJ Muggs of Cypress Hill, "American Pitbull" clearly goes to the heart of what and why people feel so strongly for these dogs. Writer James Frey ("A Million Little Pieces") contributes an historically informative and personally sensitive essay, that, along with Marc Joseph's photographs, may well change a few minds on this, most misunderstood of all of man's best friends". A stunning tour-de-force, this is without a doubt one of our favorite photo-essays in recent years! A most handsome example of the ultra-scarce brown buckram variant cover of the hardbound 2003 Steidl first edition still in the publisher's shrinkwrap. PLEASE NOTE: Additional shipping costs are required for this item beyond our standard rates due to its weight - we will inform you of the applicable amount at time of purchase. 3-88243-914-9 Inventory Number: 020830
