BETTINA HUBBY: THANKS FOR THE MAMMARIES BOOK RELEASE

Please join LAND (Los Angeles Nomadic Division), Klowden Mann Gallery and Arcana in celebrating the release of Bettina Hubby’s new artist publication, Thanks for the Mammaries, on Sunday, July 10, 2016 from 4-6pm at Arcana: Books on the Arts (8675 Washington Blvd. Culver City, CA 90232). Published by LAND, the book documents the various iterations of Hubby’s ongoing project, Thanks for the Mammaries, the Facebook feed, which was installed at the LAND HQ from October through November of 2015.

In 2014, Hubby announced her Breast Cancer diagnosis on Facebook and asked her friends and community to submit “boob-related imagery.” People showered Hubby with images, videos, and verbiage that helped her heal and inspired her to pay it forward. Touched by the uplifting effect of this communal support, Hubby sent out a call to artists to submit works for an exhibition. The exhibitions and online Facebook feed displayed the outpouring of support that resulted from Hubby’s call to action, selections of which are documented in the publication. Hubby writes, “What continues to bring me the most satisfaction is the feedback regarding my approach, in that it has been positively impacting and inspiring people who have (and even many who have not) faced illness in their lives, or in their loved ones’ lives. This is why I wanted to release this as a book to a wider audience. This book is dedicated to the medicinal power of boobishness.”

Hubby’s new limited edition, B(*)(*)B DOOB, produced by Klowden Mann, will also be released at the event. The serial edition, What will she DOOB next?, consists of eight Hubby-centric self-portrait figurines created using DOOB-3D printing technology. The first in the series will be a portrait of Hubby that directly relates to Thanks for the Mammaries. These figures will be offered as a subscription, published quarterly, or sold individually. Book of the day (and book signing Saturday – not to be missed! – details here) > Deanna Templeton: The Swimming Pool. Um Yeah Arts (@deannatempleton, @umyeaharts). “The Swimming Pool is a new photographic essay from California-based street photographer Deanna Templeton that departs from her usual style to offer an expressive, intimate view of the human form underwater. The series was born after an impromptu nude swimming-pool shoot of husband and artist Ed Templeton, which spurred an eight-year journey in the study of light, expression and the enigma of water. Shooting entirely on color and black-and-white film and Polaroid, Templeton sent friends into the pool to be photographed in their truest form. Unlike her street photography, in which subjects were often strangers, Templeton found that creating these portraits required more intimacy and connection—a feeling that is apparent throughout every image in the series, which show strong, liberated individuals, confident and at ease in their most beautiful and vulnerable moments. As Ed Templeton writes in his afterword to this volume, ‘the nude swimmer is floating in a void of quiet solitude, the gentle pressure of being underwater enclosing her form like a baby in a womb and nothing exists outside of this world. The narcissistic city is a city transfixed upon its own image – a mirror city, laced with repetition (modular) and reflections (glass). “Commemorating the 40th anniversary of the artist’s accidental death at age 50, this volume offers the first substantial survey of the entire oeuvre of Wallace Berman from the late 1940s until 1976. Berman has been long heralded as one of the most significant and influential artists to emerge in Southern California. Spiritually inclined yet steeped in popular culture and the political events of the day, he conducted reconnaissance far beyond the borders of California, mining the American psyche and broadcasting his ideas through mail art, publications, photographs and multilayered art works. Berman intersected with several intriguing cultural moments, starting with his first Los Angeles solo show in 1957 at Ed Kienholz and Walter Hopps’ Ferus Gallery. Steidl. “The photographs that Chris Killip took in Northern England between 1973 and 1985 were first published by Secker & Warburg as In Flagrante in 1988, a volume that quickly established itself as the most important 1980s photobook on England and a classic of the genre.
