THE ICE PLANT 10 YEAR ANNIVERSARY PARTY + BOOK SIGNINGS!

JOIN US SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 12th, 5:00 - 7:00 PM FOR
THE ICE PLANT 10th ANNIVERSARY PARTY!
FEATURING BOOK SIGNINGS FOR
ED PANAR: ANIMALS THAT SAW ME - VOLUME TWO
MIKE SLACK: WALKING IN PLACE 1 - NEW ORLEANS

The Ice Plant began producing artist books in 2006, and has been publishing significant illustrated and photography books and other fine printed matter for the following decade. The dynamic duo behind the press - Tricia Gabriel and Mike Slack - would like to thank all their artists and loyal customers for making these ten years possible!

Come November 12th The Ice Plant will be celebrating their 10th Anniversary with the launch of two fantastic new books:

ED PANAR: Animals That Saw Me: Volume Two - The sequel - at last! Pairing a selection of new work and newly discovered gems from Ed Panar's vast archive with an original essay on “being seen” by philosopher Timothy Morton, this volume digs deeper into the question: "Why do we assume that it's only us who does the looking?"

MIKE SLACK: Walking in Place 1: New Orleans - Co-published in an edition of six hundred copies with Perimeter Editions, Melbourne, this is the first in Mike Slack's new series of standalone volumes; each a pocket-sized ‘ambient travelogue’ of a particular geographic (or ‘psychogeographic’) location. This installment intermingles local fauna, architectural details, curious street cats, and urban ephemera, all skewed toward the sublime in the peculiar sunlight of New Orleans.

Please join us as we celebrate these new releases and The Ice Plant's auspicious 10th Anniversary with special appearances by many of their authors and artists including Ron Jude, Bettina Hubby, Michael Schmelling, Seth Lower, Antoine Wilson, and Melissa Catanese. In addition, there will be a retrospective display of imprint's oeuvre, a unique all-star publication produced exclusively for the event to be offered free  - one to a customer - with any Ice Plant purchase, ice sculpture, flowing Margaritas (Mike's own mix), and the accordion stylings of Arcana's Erin Schneider!

If you cannot attend but wish to purchase a signed copy of either book - or both! - place your online order here, or call us at 310-458-1499.

GAME CHANGERS: THE UNSUNG HEROINES OF SPORTS HISTORY - SATURDAY AT ARCANA!

PLEASE JOIN SATURDAY, OCTOBER 22nd,
5:00 - 7:00 PM FOR A BOOK LAUNCH
GAME CHANGERS: THE UNSUNG HEROINES OF SPORTS HISTORY
BY MOLLY SCHIOT

Two years ago, filmmaker Molly Schiot began the Instagram account @TheUnsungHeroines - posting a photograph each day of a female athlete who had changed the face of sports around the globe in the pre-Title IX era. These women paved the way for the likes of Serena Williams, Carli Lloyd, and Lindsey Vonn, yet few today know who they are. The account gained a devoted following, and the result is Game Changers: The Unsung Heroines of Sports History, a beautifully illustrated collection of these trailblazers’ rarely-before-seen photos and stories.

Featuring icons Althea Gibson and Wyomia Tyus, unknowns Trudy Beck and Conchita Cintron, policymaker Margaret Dunkle, sportswriter Lisa Olson, and many more, Game Changers gives these “founding mothers” the overdue recognition they richly deserve. The book also features critical conversations between past and present game changers such as former US Women’s National Soccer Team captain Abby Wambach and SportsCenter anchor Cari Champion about what it means to be a woman on and off the field. Inspiring, empowering, and unforgettable, Game Changers is perfect for anyone with a love of the game.

Joining Ms. Schiot at Arcana will be several of the athletes featured in the book along with Pro Table Tennis champion Kim Gilbert, who will be bringing a table and demonstrating some tricks of the trade. And, only those buying a book at the event will additionally receive a copy of the rad, limited edition poster of pioneering skateboarder Laura Thornhill seen below!

Special thanks are due to Game Changers' publisher Simon & SchusterFive Leaves for providing beer and wine,  Heath-Ade for providing sparkling California Kombucha, AND Pizzanista for the "seditiously delicious" pizza pies!

If you unable to attend and wish to purchase a copy of Game Changers signed by author Molly Schiot, place your order here, or call us at 310-458-1499!

Book Signing, 10/13 > Lloyd Ziff: New York / Los Angeles

PLEASE JOIN ARCANA AND KMWSTUDIO FOR
A CONVERSATION AND BOOK SIGNING WITH
LLOYD ZIFF + PAUL RUSCHA
TO CELEBRATE THE PUBLICATION OF
LLOYD ZIFF: NEW YORK / LOS ANGELES
PHOTOGRAPHS 1967-2015
THURSDAY, OCTOBER 13th, 5:00 - 7:00 PM

New York / Los Angeles, Photographs: 1967-2015 is a remarkable collection of compelling images of life in two of America’s most exciting cities, as seen through the eye of photographer Lloyd Ziff. This lovely two volume set - newly published by KMWstudio - encompasses more than forty years of black and white and color photography. As both cities change before Ziff’s inquiring lens, his unique vision emerges, amused and ironic, finding beauty and surprise in daily urban life.

Since 2000, Ziff has made photography the focus of his career. He has had one man shows at New York's Danziger Gallery and Earl McGrath Gallery in Los Angeles. His photographs have been included in Patti Smith’s autobiography, Just Kids, and The Spirit of Family by Al and Tipper Gore as well as in Blind Spot, Interview, Kid’s Wear (Germany), New York, Rolling Stone, and The New York Times Magazine. Ziff’s work is included in the permanent collections of The Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Palm Springs Art Museum, and The International Center of Photography. In 1999, he was elected to the Board of Trustees of Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York, his alma mater.

Paul Ruscha is a photographer, calligrapher, and sometimes a writer. His book, Full Moon, published by Steidl, is an eclectic overview of his personal art collection and of the artists he collects. In 1973, after thirty years as a native of Oklahoma City, he moved to Los Angeles to work for his brother, Edward, where he presently documents all of his studio's artistic production. He met Lloyd Ziff in L.A. in 1973 and they have been close friends ever since.

Please join us for an L.A.-centric conversation between Paul Ruscha and photographer Lloyd Ziff to celebrate the publication of the lovely New York / Los Angeles, Photographs: 1967-2015. The discussion will be followed by a book signing.

FOR A BOOK SIGNING + DISCUSSION:

ANTHONY HERNANDEZ

IN CONVERSATION WITH THOMAS DEMAND

Since the early 1970s, when he began photographing on the streets of his native Los Angeles, Anthony Hernandez has consistently pushed his practice into uncharted territory. Challenging himself by adopting new formats and subject matter, moving from black and white to color, from 35mm to large-format cameras, and from the human figure to landscapes to abstracted detail, he has produced an unusually varied body of work united by its arresting beauty and subtle engagement with social issues. At first largely unaware of the formal traditions of the medium, Hernandez developed his own style of street photography, one uniquely attuned to the desolate allure and sprawling expanses of LA.

Published in conjunction with the photographer’s major career-spanning retrospective at SFMoMA, Anthony Hernandez is a beautifully designed and printed hardbound catalogue featuring an introduction by Robert Adams, texts by Erin O'Toole, Ralph Rugoff, Lewis Baltz, and Anthony Hernandez, and an extensive selection of images - including many that have until now never been exhibited or published. It represents the full range and breadth of Hernandez’ work tracing his evolution as well as highlighting continuities across his practice.

Mr. Hernandez will be signing copies of his new book as well as engaging in a discussion with artist Thomas Demand that will address his work, career, and publications of the past five decades. The event is co-sponsored with PAC/LA, who will also be providing snacks and refreshments.

The afternoon of October 8th is also the 2016 Culver City Art Walk, so we're expecting an enthusiastic turnout! With space for the discussion limited, we would appreciate your RSVP if you're planning to attend. If you are unable to attend and wish to purchase a signed copy of ANTHONY HERNANDEZplace your order here - or call us at 310-458-1499.

Book Signing + Discussion with Reece Jones and Rene Peralta for "Violent Borders" Saturday, October 15th, 4:00 - 6:00 PM at Arcana!

PLEASE JOIN LA FORUM FOR ARCHITECTURE,
VERSO BOOKS, AND ARCANA FOR A SPECIAL
BOOK SIGNING AND DISCUSSION:
REECE JONES: VIOLENT BORDERS
REFUGEES AND THE RIGHT TO MOVE
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 15th, 4:00 - 6:00 PM

The LA Forum for Architecture and Urban Design in partnership with Verso Books is thrilled to present a conversation about the history of the US / Mexico border and the militarization of border walls around the world on the occasion of the launch of Reece Jones’ Violent Borders: Refugees and the Right to Move. Jones, an expert on international border security projects and a geographer at the University of Hawaii, will discuss his book with architect Rene Peralta.

Violent Borders breaks down the contradictions of living in a globalized world that simultaneously attempts to limit the free movement of people. Jones travels the border regions of the world, documenting the billions of dollars spent on border security projects, and their dire consequences for the majority of the people in the world. While the poor are restricted by the lottery of birth to slums and the aftershocks of decolonization, the wealthy travel freely, exploiting pools of cheap labor and lax environmental regulations.

The US / Mexico border - a major focus of the book - is a perfect example of the global hardening of borders. Over the past thirty years, many borders have been transformed into militarized security spaces through increased funding, deployments of additional guards, and construction of walls and surveillance infrastructure. While two-thirds of the border with Mexico remains unfenced, the federal fences are products of the relatively recent 2006 Secure Fence Act, and the Republican Presidential candidate Donald Trump’s call to build a wall on the remaining section of the border has been a major issue of the presidential election. Jones will make the case that borders are not the answer to our problems, and end on a simple, yet important idea: borders need not be natural part of the human world.

Reece Jones is a Professor of Geography at the University of Hawaii in Manoa, and the author of Border Walls, published by Zed Books in 2013. He is an award-winning scholar whose work has been featured in Time Magazine, The Economist, and Vice who is often called on to comment on border crises by publications such as the New York Times.

Rene Peralta is the co-founder of the Tijuana-based architectural firm Generica as well as the Director of the Architecture, Landscape + Urbanism program at the Woodbury University School of Architecture in San Diego. His recent work has been directed toward the research of social and cultural forms of urban border between the cities of Tijuana, Mexico and San Diego, California.

Book Signing, Oct 1 > Randi Malkin Steinberger: No Circus!

PLEASE JOIN US SATURDAY, OCTOBER 1st,
4:00 - 6:00 PM FOR A BOOK SIGNING FOR

N O   C I R C U S

Photographs by RANDI MALKIN STEINBERGER
Text by D.J. WALDIE

No Circus is a collection of photographer Randi Malkin Steinberger's vibrant color images of buildings in and around Los Angeles that have been tented for termite fumigation. After moving to the city in the early nineties, she first encountered these brightly shrouded structures and began to stop and photograph them. Knowing that they might be undraped at any given moment, Steinberger was intrigued by the way the colors and shapes of the tents revealed the buildings inside and highlighted the beauty of the poor plants on the outside, still flourishing, unaware that they were slowly being poisoned. Beyond their intended purpose of fumigation, these tents also unwittingly beckon us to stop and contemplate architectural form, the meaning of home, and the lure of the Southern California lifestyle. No Circus features a text by noted essayist D.J. Waldie, and is the culmination of a two decade pursuit of these temporary architectural enigmas. Published by Damiani, distributed by D.A.P.

Joining us along with Ms. Steinberger and Mr. Waldie will be the book's designer - and Deadbeat Club head honcho - Clint Woodside along with a special musical performance by composer Gavin Gamboa. Evoking the language of insects - both real and imagined - as well as the sounds of quarantine, Mr. Gamboa of The Teaching Machine collective will provide a backdrop of chirping, clicking, whirling, buzzing oscillations to the event!
