ROBERT IRWIN: PASADENA ART MUSEUM
(IRWIN, ROBERT). Coplans, John. Pasadena, CA: Pasadena Art Museum, 1968. First Edition. Small Oblong 4to. Printed Cardstock Wrappers. Artist Monograph. Near Fine.. One continuous 7 x 27 ½" cardstock sheet printed offset recto and verso, neatly folded in thirds to make 7 x 7", 6pp, 1 b&w illustration. This slender six page brochure is the very first exhibition catalogue to document Robert Irwin's "disc paintings" of the sixties. Published in conjunction with a show at the Pasadena Art Museum (then the institutional bastion of Los Angeles' contemporary art scene), curator John Coplans discusses these new works in depth. And since the artist refused to allow these works to be reproduced in that period - the illustration here is a photographic portrait by Dennis Hopper. A handsome example of this exceedingly uncommon ephemeral item - only six copies are currently cited in OCLC WorldCat - that was the only printed documentation of the exhibition.
