As New/As New. pp, profusely illustrated in b&w and color. In many of the clubs, black and white musicians played together and more significantly, people of all races gathered together to enjoy an evening’s entertainment. House photographers roamed the floor and for a dollar, took picture of patrons that were developed on site and could be taken home in a keepsake folder with the club’s name and logo. "Sittin’ In" tells the story of the most popular club in these cities through striking images, first-hand anecdotes, true tales about the musicians who performed their unforgettable shows, notes on important music recorded live there, and more. All of this is supplemented by colorful club memorabilia, including posters, handbills, menus, branded matchbooks, and more. Inside you’ll also find exclusive, in-depth interviews conducted specifically for this book with the legendary Quincy Jones; legendary tenor saxophonist Sonny Rollins; Pulitzer Prize-winning fashion critic Robin Givhan; artist, musician, and creative director of the Kennedy Center, Jason Moran; and Jazz critic Dan Morgenstern. Gold surveys America’s jazz scene and its intersection with racism during segregation, focusing on three crucial regions: the East Coast (New York, Atlantic City, Boston, Washington, D.C.); the Midwest (Chicago, Cleveland, Detroit, St. Louis, Kansas City); and the West Coast (Los Angeles, San Francisco). Its collection of ephemeral snapshots tells the story of an era that helped transform American life, beginning the move from traditional Dixieland jazz to bebop, from conservatism to the push for personal freedom.." RACE HATRED ON TRIAL
(WALKER, RYAN). Communist Party of the United States of America. Foreword by Jim Allen. New York: Daily Worker Publishing Company, 1931. First Edition. 12mo. Stapled Illustrated Wrappers. Civil Rights Document. Good -.. 48pp, 3 b&w illustrations + cover illustration. In a protective clear acetate dustwrapper. According to this publication's authors, "The trial of August Yokinen before 1,500 white and black workers in Harlem for acts clearly based on race prejudice was an event without example in the history of the American Labor Movement. He was not tried before any court of American ruling-class "justice." He was tried by a court of workers." Written and published by The Communist Party of the United States of America, "Race Hatred on Trial" is the transcript and summation of the 1931 Party-sponsored adjudication of Mr. Yokinen for his inhospitable treatment of three Negro workers attending a Finnish Workers Club entertainment in Harlem. As prefaced here, "the seriousness of the crime he committed against the working class is made clear in this pamphlet." To atone for his transgressions following the tribunal's guilty verdict, Yokinen was immediately expelled from the Communist Party and required to "actively participate in the struggle against white chauvinism throughout Harlem." An internally most presentable example of the uncommon 1931 first edition of this notable pre-World War II contribution to civil rights literature that includes four illustrations by leftist American political activist and cartoonist Ryan Walker showing pronounced wear, creasing, chipping, soiling, and minor paper loss to the extremities of its brittle newsprint covers; which appear to have at one point detached along the spine and been subsequently semi-artfully re-attached. It has been priced accordingly. Inventory Number: 026735

"ENGINEERS LIFE ON THE M.V. DALERDIJK" - A UNIQUE MID-CENTURY ALBUM OF A CREWMAN'S ORIGINAL DRAWINGS FROM THE VOYAGE OF A HOLLAND AMERICA LINER
Author Not Stated. NP. ND (Circa 1950).: Self-Published. Edition Not Stated - Presumed First. 8vo. Wrappers with a Twine Tie. Travel Album. Good./No Jacket - As Issued. np (32pp), 16 individual 5 x 7 ¼" hand-drawn illustrations in ink on heavy paper stock + 1 hand-drawn cover illustration. Text in English and Dutch. In a protective clear acetate dustwrapper. "Engineers Life On The M.V. Dalerdijk" is a unique handmade book consisting of sixteen charming original ink on paper illustrations documenting a voyage from Rotterdam to Cristobal, Panama and Los Angeles by a crew member of the Holland America Lines Cargo-Passenger Liner. The otherwise unidentified author was a talented amateur artist that documented scenes from his daily life onboard and while on shore leave between The Netherlands, South America, and the US. Built and originally named the Damsterdijk in 1930, after various vicissitudes during WW II the ship was reconditioned and renamed the M.V. Dalerdijk in 1949. By the early fifties the liner's name was anglicized as the M.V. Dalerdyk, so this original manuscript would have been created sometime between 1949 and 1953. Its caricature-like drawings - executed in a style not dissimilar to that of H.C. Westermann - are captioned: 1. "Wacht Der Honden", 2. "Pin Up Boy", 3. "Panama Nights", 4. "Breakfast", 5. "Officers Sundeck", 6. "Lunch", 7. "Officer!!!", 8. "No Diving", 9. "No Diving", 10. "Dinner", 11. "No Boys, Staff Only", 12. "Bridge", 13. "Krakken Loden", 14. "Kegel Club", 15. TODD HIDO: B-SIDES BOX SET: SILVER MEADOWS - SIGNED BY THE PHOTOGRAPHER
(HIDO, TODD). Hido, Todd. Oakland, CA & Portland, OR: B-Sides Box Sets & Nazraeli Press, 2014. First Edition 1/500. 16mo. Loose Plates in Plexiglas Box. Photography Monograph. As New/No Jacket - As Issued. 50 loose 2 ½ x 3 ½" cardstock sheets printed offset recto and verso, 47 illustrations in color and b&w. Designed by Bob Awfuldish. "All photographers have a secret stash of photographs that float on the margins of published existence. Photographs that never quite fit into their current projects or are waiting to become the narrative of their next book or show, but that are too good to be left unused. They persist: the photographers pull them out, year after year, they recognize them as great images that should be shared, but the photos somehow frustratingly defy their years of shuffling into categorization or conventional use. This box set is those photographs, finally liberated from that file labeled "Orphans & Misfits". Todd Hido's first B-Sides Box Set, "Silver Meadows", is a follow-up publication to the artist's award-winning 2013 monograph "Excerpts from Silver Meadows". Designed to function as a companion to that title as well as a sovereign object in its own right, the selection includes alternate images that didn't make it into the book, as well as variations of images that did. It offers a behind-the-scenes look at how the photographer selects and arranges images in book form. 'Making good and interesting pictures is only half of what it takes to make a memorable visual book,' Hido explains. 'The way one organizes images to create a narrative sequence also plays an important role in creating something that people want to pick up and take home". A brand new, most handsome example of this charming little set of fifty collector-type trading cards additionally BOLDLY SIGNED "Todd Hido" in silver ink on the title card housed in the publisher's Plexiglas box, as issued. 1-59005-409-1 Inventory Number: 026720
