Fine/No Jacket - As Issued. np, 18 b&w illustrations. Text in French and English. This is one of the series of slender catalogues produced to document John Knight's exhibitions and public projects over the past thirty-five years. Austerely designed in a serial format of white, often die-cut wrappers, this installment documents Knight's 2001 outdoor Storm King Art Center installation entitled "87º". "John Knight’s work, 87°, draws the viewer’s focus off the Art Center’s property to an industrial object in its viewshed: the shapely water tower of the former Star Expansion Company. From a telescope on a newly constructed viewing platform, a visual line is drawn obliquely across the allée of trees in the center’s south fields to the upper portion of the water tower, about a mile away. Looking beyond Storm King, the work highlights the institutions relationship to its larger sociopolitical context, including its role within evolving regional land-use systems. Focusing on these overlooked aspects of contextual relevance, it adds meaning to a key element of Storm King’s success: the value of a well-placed lookout." A bright, most handsome example. CHUCK CLOSE: SCRIBBLE BOOK - DELUXE SIGNED, SLIPCASED EDITION LIMITED TO ONE HUNDRED COPIES
(CLOSE, CHUCK). Close, Chuck. Gottingen, GERMANY: Little Steidl, 2017. First Edition #65/100 Deluxe. 4to. Cloth in a Clamshell Box. Artist Monograph. As New/No Jackets - As Issued. np (18pp) + np (18pp) + 8pp. Two individually bound 110 ½ x 13 ½" nine-sheet leporellos printed by color offset lithography recto only, 18 color illustrations. Designed by Chuck Close and Nina Holland. "The idea of a book without words had resonance for Chuck Close. As a child, his severe dyslexia stood in the way of reading, making images all the more important. He remembers a visual encyclopedia from his early years and the feeling of being overtaken by the intensity of its pictures. The idea also resonated with his ongoing interest in revealing the process of his work, which he accomplishes largely through visual presentation, using very few words, if any. "Scribble Book" is a self-portrait that emerges step-by-step out of the printing process, one plate and one color at a time. The viewer follows a series of nine individual plate proofs - volume one - along with a corresponding series of nine progressive proofs - volume two. By comparing the plate proofs against the progressives, the viewer may ascertain not only the effect as one color is added to another to create the final nine-color portrait, but also the compositional decisions and careful modifications made by the artist at each stage of the project. A similar work was made with twelve plates and included in the exhibition "Chuck Close Prints: Process and Collaboration" at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2004 and was an immediate success. "Scribble Book" is presented in this deluxe edition as two accordion-fold books. The first shows the series of plate proofs, and the second the series of progressive proofs, culminating with a nine-color self-portrait. CHARLES BUKOWSKI: CRUCIFIX IN A DEATHHAND: NEW POEMS 1963-65 - WITH A FULL PAGE PAINTING SIGNED AND DATED AT THE TIME OF PUBLICATION
(BUKOWSKI, CHARLES). Bukowski, Charles & Noel Rockmore. New York & New Orleans: Lyle Stuart Inc. & The Loujon Press, 1965. First Edition 1/3100. Tall 4to. Illustrated Wrappers. Poetry Monograph. Very Good./Very Good -.. 101pp. illustrated in b&w + b&w covers. With 4 b&w etchings bound in. In a protective clear acetate dustwrapper. "Crucifix in a Deathhand" is the elaborately designed and bound 1965 collection of poetry by hard-living Angeleno Charles Bukowski fabricated by Louise "Gypsy Lou" and Jon Webb at their Loujon Press in New Orleans, and published with the imprint of Lyle Stuart. The author's sixth book, it was issued as a "Loujon Press Award Book" (Gypsy Lou Series #2). Printed by hand-letterpress on seven shades of heavy Spectra Linweave paper with deckle edges and elaborately bound by the Press, it includes four black and white etchings with tissue overlays by New Orleans-based artist Noel Rockmore. An internally bright, most handsome example of this tour de force (a deluxe-but-unnumbered, uncatalogued variant of entry sixteen in Aaron Krumhansel's "A Descriptive Bibliography of the Primary Publications of Charles Bukowski") limited to three thousand, one hundred unnumbered copies SIGNED AND DATED "Charles Bukowski / 3-16-65" in red acrylic paint at the time of publication beneath a striking ACRYLIC PAINTING in silver and red on the verso of a blank page at the rear. There is very light soiling and wear to the top and bottom edges of the textblock, and its Noel Rockmore-illustrated covers shows mild wear, creasing, fraying, and age-toning to the extremities. The publisher's printed wraparound band is complete and present, though it has a clean separation and is somewhat worn, torn, and age-toned. Additionally laid in is a vintage xerox of Ormonde Plater's nine-paragraph interview with Jon Webb about the book's publication captioned "Tough Poems" from the May 28th, 1965 issue of New Orleans' "Vieux Carre Courier". All in all, this is a most desirable example of an important early Bukowski title with an impressive painting that looks nicer in hand than it describes. Inventory Number: 026504

VARIOUSVIRGINS: DEVIATIONS IN SPACE BY JASON RHOADES - A UNIQUE ISTALLATION MANUAL HAND-ASSEMBLED BY THE ARTIST
(RHOADES, JASON). Rhoades, Jason. NP. ND (Circa 1997).: NP (Self-Published). First Edition. 8vo. Stapled Pictorial Wrappers. Artist's Book. Very Good.. np (22pp), 9 b&w illustrations + color covers. "VARIOUSVIRGINS: Deviations in Space" is a slender twenty-two page artist's book likely produced by Jason Rhoades in conjunction with his 1997 installation entitled "Deviations in Space, Various Virgins" exhibited at New York's David Zwirner Gallery. In it, the iconoclastic late Los Angeles-based artist definies a number of terms incorporating the word "version" - from "aversion" to "universion" - before elaborating upon the piece's references, background, and sculptural components. It is an intensely smart publication that reveals the work's inspiration in both Pasadena's notorious rocket propulsion pioneer-turned-Majick acolyte Jack Whiteside Parsons and the artistic practice of Franz West! As a bonus, it also reproduces Rhoades' astrological natal chart. Low-budget and chaotic like so many of his installations, this was almost certainly hand-assembled and staple-bound by Rhoades himself at his Inglewood studio using the artist's trusty Canon multi-cartridge color duplicator. A most handsome example of this exceedingly uncommon, possibly unique document showing some trivial dampstaining along the top edge of the last few pages. Inventory Number: 026501
