ART IN POSTERS: THE COMPLETE ORIGINAL POSTERS OF BRAQUE - CHAGALL - DUFY - LEGER - MATISSE - MIRO - PICASSO
Mourlot, Fernand. Monte Carlo, MONACO & New York: Andre Sauret Editeur & George Braziller, Publisher, 1959. First Edition. 4to. Debossed Cloth. Art Monograph. Fair (But Partially Disbound)/No Jacket. 248pp, 102 color illustrations. Text in English. Issued in 1959, "Art in Posters" is the beautifully printed survey of one hundred and two lithographically-printed post-war exhibition posters produced (primarily by the renowned Parisian fine art publishers Mourlot Freres) for Georges Braque, Marc Chagall, Raoul Dufy, Fernand Leger, Henri Matisse, Joan Miro, and Pablo Picasso. Each image is sumptuously reproduced photolithographically here in miniature by Mourlot, creating essentially one hundred and two original graphics. An internally complete, serviceable example only of this notoriously fragile, poorly-bound volume showing age-toning, staining, and foxing to the extremities of the cloth and the edges of the textblock that is additionally lacking its illustrated dust jacket. Instead of sewing the gathered signatures to create a secure binding, for some reason publisher Andre Sauret chose to trim these vertically at the spine to form one hundred and twenty-four individual leaves that were glued to a linen backing strip along the gutter using brittle mucilage. This cheap adhesive has (as usual) crystallized and perished in the ensuing six decades, leaving the majority of the pages detached from the spine. All in all this is a decent enough copy with the one hundred and two striking poster reproductions each present and awaiting being matted and framed individually. PLEASE NOTE: Due to these condition issues, we have priced this example accordingly and are offering it for sale strictly "AS IS", with no returns. If you have any questions or concerns about these details, please voice them before purchasing this - we will be happy to answer any inquiry. LC 59-13125 Inventory Number: 027153
