N.Y. DAILY PLANET: MAY 1-15 1976 - WITH THE COVER FEATURE "PATTI SMITH IN A RAGE OVER NUDE PICTURES"
(SMITH, PATTI) (N.Y. DAILY PLANET). Luckman, Mike, Editor & Publisher. New York: Planet Media Co., 1976. First Edition. Folio. Pictorial Tabloid Wrappers. Underground Newspaper. Near Fine.. 32pp, profusely illustrated in b&w. The "N.Y. Daily Planet" was a seventies New York underground newspaper devoted to a mix of music, art, erotica, and counterculture political coverage. This May 1976 issue boldly features a cover story entitled "Patti Smith in a Rage Over Nude Pictures" that presents six images of Ms. Smith taken in 1973 in varying states of undress. Credited to The Daily Planet's "Lois Lane", these have been speculatively attributed in print to New York photographer Judy Linn, who indeed took nude portraits of both Patti Smith and Robert Mapplethorpe in this period. However, as none of these pictures or sittings are reproduced in her comprehensive 2011 book "Patti Smith: 1969-1976", we find no basis for that attribution. The accompanying article gives details on the artist's attorneys' attempt to unsuccessfully block the disputed photographs from being published here. In addition, the issue features nudes of Marilyn Chambers and Paloma Picasso along with contributions about Phil Ochs, John Lennon, Bob Dylan, Jerry Garcia, Tiny Tim, David Bowie, Iggy Pop and Wayne County, The Rolling Stones, John Giorno, Candy Darling, Abbie Hoffman, Jerry Rubin, Paul Krassner, The Weather Underground, Jimmy Carter, Howard Hughes, Harry Houdini, Flying Saucers, Steve Reeves, and much, much more. A most handsome example of this uncommon item perfect for the Patti Smith completeist showing just a bit of age-toning and fraying to the edges of its acidic newsprint pages. Inventory Number: 026514
