RICH AND POOR: PHOTOGRAPHS BY JIM GOLDBERG
(GOLDBERG, JIM). Goldberg, Jim. New York: Random House, Inc., 1985. First Paperback Edition. 4to. Pictorial Wrappers. Photography Monograph. Near Fine.. MIA: BELIEVED SOLD FROM VITRINES - TAKEN OFFLINE 3/15/23. np, profusely illustrated in b&w. In a protective clear acetate dustwrapper. Published in 1985, "Rich and Poor" is Jim Goldberg's landmark first book that comments on the state of the American consciousness from the viewpoint of the extremes of its class structure. In the early eighties the photographer took black and white portraits of individuals and families across the economic divide, mounted these on board, then requested the sitters to comment on them in their own hand in the margins. The resulting mix of image and text created a gripping, emotional reportage quite unlike any photobook that had preceded it, and set the template for many of Goldberg's later iconoclastic projects. A most handsome example of the 1985 first paperbound edition of this gem (cited on pages 250-251 of "The Book of 101 Books" and page 231 of Fred Ritchin and Carole Naggar's "Magnum Photobook: A Catalogue Raisonné") showing just a bit of age-toning to the extremities of the inside rear cover. 0-394-74156-0 Inventory Number: 026388
