THE ART OF ELIZABETH CATLETT - DELUXE LIMITED HARDBOUND EDITION WITH A SIGNED WOODBLOCK PRINT

(CATLETT, ELIZABETH). Lewis, Samella & Elizabeth Catlett. Foreword by Maxine Waters. Claremont, CA: Hancraft Studios, 1984. First Edition 1/1000 Deluxe. 4to. Cloth in Pictorial Dust Jacket. Catalogue Raisonné. Near Fine/Near Fine. 194pp, profusely illustrated in color and b&w. Designed by Robert Biddle. With a biography and bibliography. This is the lavishly produced 1984 monograph cum catalogue raisonné of the graphic work by the noted late African-American artist Elizabeth Catlett. Still the most comprehensive document of her printed work to date, it features a significant text by Samella Lewis with contributions by the artist along with scores of previously unpublished images. An internally most handsome example of the uncommon deluxe hardbound edition of this important publication limited to one thousand copies NUMBERED (131/1000)  AND SIGNED "E Catlett" in silver ink on the front pastedown showing a bit of light wear and creasing to the dust jacket. Laid in is Catlett's graphically striking 9 ½ x 7 1/8" linoleum block print from 1983 entitled "Survivor" that is TITLED, NUMBERED, SIGNED, AND DATED "Survivor / 131/1000 / E Catlett '83" in pencil along the bottom margin, as issued. The sheet shows some light foxing along the top and right edges that in no way affects the print image. While the limitation states that one thousand of these deluxe versions were produced, its relative scarcity in the marketplace seems to indicate that only a portion were actually distributed, and it is increasingly unusual to find copies of the print still paired with the book. Additionally laid in is the publisher's "A Note on the Production on The Art of Elizabeth Catlett" brochure. 0-941248-06-2 Inventory Number: 025300
