MAN RAY: SELF PORTRAIT - SIGNED PRESENTATION COPY TO EMERSON AND DINA WOELFFER
(MAN RAY). Man Ray. New York: An Atlantic Monthly Press Book / Little, Brown & Company, 1963. First Edition. 8vo. Cloth in Illustrated Jacket. Artist Autobiography. Very Good -/Very Good -. 402pp, 32 b&w illustrations. "Self Portrait" is Man Ray's 1963 tell-all autobiography that chronicles the artist's odyssey from his modest beginnings as Emmanuel Radnitzky from Ridgefield, New Jersey to becoming the toast of the Dada, Surrealist, Cinema, Fashion, and Literary sets in New York, Paris and Hollywood. A most presentable example of the 1963 first Little, Brown & Company printing additionally bearing the BOLDLY SIGNED PRESENTATION "for Emerson and Dina / Man Ray / 1966" in black ink on the title page showing some light wear and soiling along with mild dog-earing to the upper foredge corners of a few pages whose fragile dust jacket is a bit worn and rubbed on the spine and rear panel. The inscription is to Man Ray's friend, the late, great Los Angeles artist, collector, and educator Emerson Woelffer (and his wife Dina) from whose estate we acquired this directly. The 1966 date corresponds to the artist's return to Los Angeles to attend the comprehensive Man Ray retrospective exhibition held at the County Museum of Art, and produce a series of prints at Gemini G.E.L. It bears Woelffer's embossed red ownership label and handwritten date "July 31-64" on the front pastedown.
