LOS ANGELES TIMES MAY 30, 1971: WEST MAGAZINE - WITH AN ARTICLE ON CAPTAIN BEEFHEART
(LOS ANGELES TIMES WEST MAGAZINE). Peter D. Bunzel, Editor. Los Angeles: Los Angeles Times, 1971. First Edition. 4to. Stapled Tabloid Wrappers. Periodical. Very Good.. 31pp, profusely illustrated in b&w and color. "West" was for decades the Los Angeles Times Sunday magazine. During the late sixties it underwent a bold stylistic transformation headed by design director Mike Salisbury, and proceeded to publish some of the hippest local reportage on Hollywood, fashion, music, youth culture, and politics. This May 30th, 1971 installment boasts a bold cover graphic by Salisbury, and is devoted primarily to matters automotive. It additionally features a fashion spread with actress Lee Grant, and most notably Charles T. Powers' "Beefheart in Blunderland" - a dispatch from the road with a great full page Jim Marshall photo chronicling a Warner Brothers promotional tour by Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band in support of "Lick My Decals Off, Baby" with Ry Cooder as the opening act. A bright, most handsome example of this uncommon item showing just a bit of typical age-toning to its newsprint pages perfect for the Don Van Vliet completeist. Inventory Number: 024682
