JAY DEFEO: SELECTED WORKS, PAST AND PRESENT
(DEFEO, JAY). Rubin, David S. & Michael McClure. Preface by Thomas Albright. San Francisco, CA: San Francisco Art Institute, 1984. First Edition. 4to. Stapled Illustrated Wrappers. Artist Monograph. Near Fine.. 32pp, 14 b&w and 2 color illustrations + color cover. With an exhibition checklist, biography and exhibition history. This is the catalogue published in conjunction with the 1984 retrospective exhibition of forty-four works by noted Bay Area artist Jay DeFeo held at the San Francisco Art Institute's Emanuel Walter and Atholl McBean Galleries. It coincided with the presentation of the annual Adeline Kent Award to the creator of the legendary, monumental 2,300 pound painting "the Rose" (as immortalized in Bruce Conner's film of the same name). Included is Michael McClure's paean to the artist, "SONG for Jay". A handsome example of this uncommon document showing just a bit of handling and age-toning to its white covers.
