VENICE SPACEWALK: THE SPACETIME PHOTOGRAPHY OF JAY MARK JOHNSON: VOLUME ONE - LIMITED SLIPCASED EDITION SIGNED BY THE PHOTOGRAPHER
(JOHNSON, JAY MARK). Finch, Christopher, Shana Nys Dambrot & Jay Mark Johnson. Venice, CA: Venice Family Clinic & Jay Mark Johnson, 2010. First Edition. Oblong Narrow 4to. Linen Boards in Slipcase. Photography Monograph. As New/No Jacket - As Issued. np, profusely illustrated in color. Designed by Hsuan-ying Chou and Jay Mark Johnson with Lorraine Wild and Victor Hu, Green Dragon Office. This lavishly produced volume is the first monograph on the space-time photography of Jay Mark Johnson. "Coming across Jay Mark Johnson's photographs for the first time, a viewer may well be reminded of the photo finish images used to determine winners at track meets, horse races, and other sporting events. In Johnson's work, as in photo finish imagery, people, animals and moving objects are frozen against a background that has been dissolved by the camera into horizontal bands of color stretching from edge to edge of the picture plane. This similarity is no accident, since both Johnson and the photo finish cameraman employ the same technology - slit-scan photography. As utilized by both, slit-scan is used to capture movement as it unfolds in time. In emulsion-based photography, the technology involves an actual slit moving continuously past the film, exposing a sliver at a time to create an image that "freezes" motion. With the highly sophisticated digital camera that Johnson employs, the same effect is achieved with a "virtual" electronic slit, a single pixel in breadth that scans the subject (which, like a race, is in fact an "event"). In either case, all of the movement that occurs in front of the lens is synthesized into a single image. The resulting photographs capture, in a graphic way, the event that takes place during that period, so that in Johnson's pictures a person may appear more than once in the same image (having overtaken the tracking movement of the slit), and objects become subject to an exaggerated form of the photographic phenomenon known as "focal-plane shutter distortion". A brand new, pristine example of the limited slipcased edition of this amazing book of color time and motion studies taken in and around Venice California additionally BOLDLY SIGNED AND DATED "Jay Mark Johnson 2014" in black ink on the title page still in the publisher's shrinkwrap. JOE JOHNSON: A SELF-PUBLISHED 1967 PRINT PORTFOLIO OF EIGHT MALE NUDES - EACH SIGNED BY THE ARTIST
(JOHNSON, JOE). Johnson, Joe. NP (San Francisco, CA). ND (1967).: Self-Published. First Edition. Folio. Loose Prints in a Portfolio. Print Portfolio. Fine.. Eight individual 17 ½ x 11" heavy paper sheets printed photo-offset rectos only, 8 b&w illustrations. Joe Johnson was an early and prominent member of San Francisco's burgeoning LGBTQ community of the 1960s. While primarily known as the creator of the pioneering underground gay comics "Miss Thing" and "Big Dick", Johnson was additionally an accomplished artist and illustrator who at various times in the sixties and seventies produced fine art prints and greeting cards featuring male model studies. These were lo-fi ventures most likely sold under the counter, by word of mouth, and discreet mail order. This is a set of eight of these prints issued in 1967 by the artist each depicting a young male nude - six full frontal - reproduced by photo-offset on cream colored, heavy woven paper stock housed in a plain red textured paper portfolio. We acquired from a single source several variants of this set, with none bearing any form of labeling or printed documentation; just the plates with or without the portfolio. The prints were issued without a signature in the plate, but Johnson signed some in pencil, and even hand-colored a few in a flesh-colored watercolor. A brand new, most handsome example of this exceedingly uncommon item with each print additionally SIGNED "Joe Johnson" in pencil in the publisher's unprinted paper portfolio. Inventory Number: 026944

JASON LEE: IN THE GOLD DUST RUSH - SIGNED BY THE PHOTOGRAPHER
(LEE, JASON). Lee, Jason. Stanley / Barker, I00210204, 2020. First Edition. 10 x 11 in., 112 pages. Hardbound. Photography Monograph. New/No Jacket - As Issued.
For the past fourteen years, artist, actor and skateboarder Jason Lee has traversed America making quiet, reflective photographs detailing the landscape and its oft-overlooked and forgotten places.
His new book "In The Gold Dust Rush" draws together eighty-four never before published black and white photographs from the last twelve of those years into a meandering journey from the mountains to the city.
“Since my first photographic outings in my native California in 2006, where I explored a more rural, perhaps neglected face of the state, and the many subsequent outings zigzagging through the West Coast, the Southwest, and Texas, I remain fascinated by these American scraps, by evidence of cancellation and departure, and the environmental contradictions that make up our collective everyday view. These conflicts, at once strange and beautiful, this is where the questions are. It’s then and now splitting time, man and nature pushing up against each other, and progress forever forcing itself on the contented. And somewhere in the middle you make pictures.” Jason Lee

JASON LEE: GALVESTON - SIGNED BY THE PHOTOGRAPHER
(LEE, JASON). Lee, Jason. Galveston, TX: Galveston Historical Foundation & Film Photographic, 2021. First Edition 1/2500. Oblong 4to. Debossed Boards. Photography Monograph. As New/No Jacket - As Issued. 176pp, 98 illustrations in color and duotone. "Between the months of January and April of 2017, I roamed Texas sporadically with my old Speed Graphic 4 x 5 camera for what turned out to be twenty-five days and roughly 5000 miles. I'd moved to Texas just two years prior and thought it only made sense to see more of the big state than I'd seen before as a visiting photographer. And so, I did. Up into the Panhandle, a bit east, central, south, and West Texas. 111 of the 298 exposures I made would end up being printed in the 2018 book "A Plain View.' But no matter how many miles and real estate I'd covered on those travels, I never thought to make it far enough south to meet Galveston. And then, perhaps ironically, the Galveston Historical Foundation contacted me in May of 2020 to see if I might like to extend my Texas series by making photographs in Galveston. I was happy to accept the offer, as perhaps the whole of my Texas story had yet to be completed. And so that November I drove my car from Los Angeles, where I was living once more, to Galveston with my cameras, in the passenger seat my friend and fellow photographer Raymond Molinar who would assist me in my efforts to document as strange and beautiful a land as I'd ever seen while also making not only behind-the-scenes photographs of my process but his own photographs of this remarkably standstill place. And the payoff of the experience is not just that I've now seen more of Texas than I ever thought I would but that this new book would stand as my favorite thus far, if not an extension of the mainland Texas photographs before it." A brand new, most handsome example of the quickly sold out 2021 first and only printing of this lovely publication additionally BOLDLY SIGNED "Jason Lee" in black ink on the title page at our shop. 1-7370129-0-1 Inventory Number: 027592

Neil Leifer. Guts & Glory. The Golden Age of American Football 1958-1978
(LEIFER, NEIL). Leifer, Neil. Koln, GERMANY: Benedikt Taschen Verlag, I00210207, 2008. Collector's Edition (1/1500). Oblong Folio. Hardbound in Slipcase. Sports Photography Monograph. New/No Jacket - As Issued.
The most memorable moments since the birth of pro football in America.
The best of sports photographer Neil Leifer's 10,000 rolls of football pictures, including hundreds of previously unpublished images. Presented in a custom slipcase and limited to a total of 1,500 copies signed by the photographer, this Collector’s Edition is a companion to Neil Leifer’s instant sell-out success, Ballet in the Dirt: The Golden Age of Baseball.
In 1958, sports photographer Neil Leifer took the picture that remains one of his most famous to this day. The day he got the shot—Alan Ameche’s game-winning “Sudden Death” touchdown—was Leifer’s 16th birthday. This game, called “The Greatest Ever Played,” signaled football’s emergence as America’s new national pastime; formerly half-empty stadiums welcomed sold-out crowds seemingly overnight, while football surpassed pro baseball and college football in national television ratings. Starting then, on any given Sunday, Leifer was most likely shooting a football game somewhere in America. His 1961 photo of legendary Giants quarterback Y. A. Tittle dropping back to pass landed Leifer his first cover for Sports Illustrated and cemented his close connection to the sport.
While best known for his iconic photograph of Muhammed Ali towering over a fallen Sonny Liston, and for the enormous diversity of subjects he covered in and out of the sports world, it is his football pictures Leifer considers his best. This collection represents the best of his best, culled from over 10,000 rolls of film on the sport, including hundreds of previously unpublished pictures. It’s impossible to conceive of Peyton Manning hovering over an impromptu wood fire on the sidelines during a blizzard, but Leifer captured Tittle’s Giants doing exactly that during the coldest game in his living memory (the 1962 Championship in New York, a game “far colder than the famous Ice Bowl”). From Vince Lombardi’s Green Bay Packers dynasty to the Miami Dolphins’ perfect season in 1972 to the Minnesota Vikings’ terrifying Front Four—the “Purple People Eaters”—they’re all here.
Following an introduction assembled from the best football columns of the era by famed sports columnist Jim Murray, this collection is divided into four chapters: “On Any Sunday” is Leifer’s homage to the game. “The Legends” includes heroes like Johnny Unitas, Jim Brown, Terry Bradshaw, Joe Namath, Dick Butkus, Frank Gifford, and “Mean” Joe Greene. “The Bosses” delves into the victories on and off the field of immortal coaches Vince Lombardi, John Madden, Tom Landry, Weeb Ewbank, and others. Finally, “The Big Game” traces major championship games from 1958 through Super Bowl XII. The in depth captions put the images into their historical context, making the book highly accessible and informative.
For this Collector’s Edition, master sports photographer Neil Leifer sifted through over 10,000 rolls of film, selecting his absolute best shots, including hundreds of previously unseen pictures, to trace pro football’s most memorable moments. From the Miami Dolphins’ perfect 1972 season to the Minnesota Vikings’ “Purple People Eaters”—it’s all here, complemented by Jim Murray’s top football columns of the era for complete guts and glory nostalgia.
A brand new, unopened example of the Collector’s Edition limited to 1,500 copies numbered and signed by Neil Leifer in the publisher’s original printed shipping carton.

How do you find a book when you can't recall the title…or the author? This homage to a common reader's dilemma is a gift the booklover in your life won't soon forget.
Readers know all too well the comedy and tragedy of forgetting the name of a must-find book. Inspired by this torturous predicament, artist Marina Luz creates paintings of books based on the descriptions we use when we can't remember their titles—mining Internet book-search forums for the quirky, vague, and often hilarious language we come up with in these moments. This volume collects dozens of these imaginary books into a library all their own: Titles like "Cat, Possibly Named Henry," "It Was All a Dream," or "Something-Something, Beverly Hills" inspire dreaming up their contents, often as entertaining as trying to guess the real book behind them. A celebration of book love unlike any other, this petite book is a clever gift for bibliophiles that will spark knowing smiles.
Marina Luz is an award-winning illustrator whose work has appeared in the New York Times, Vice, and ProPublica, among other publications. She runs her illustration and design studio Honeylux out of Oakland, California. She found these descriptions during her own search for a forgotten book, Iceberg Shows Up Overnight in Front of Hotel.
