"In the Fall of 2010, photographer Jona Frank began to make portraits at an amateur boxing club just outside of Liverpool in a suburb called Ellesmere Port. All the boys tried to act tough for the camera, and Frank was reminded of a line from the Arcade Fire song Rococo: "They seem wild, but they are so tame". In the song they are singing about going downtown and watching the modern kids. It made Frank think about how these boys, in this town, are in their life. For them, everything is present. This is their 21st Century, their right now, but their faces evoke the past. Many of them, shirtless and sweaty, their hands covered with big, puffy, colorful gloves, look timeless, but the truth is they are like any adolescent who is trying on a role and attempting to find their place. Like the suburb of Liverpool where these photos were made, boxing has a foot in the past while grasping its contemporary purpose. Frank’s photographs provide a record of a sport and a community whose presence is slowly fading. Bruce Weber states in the books preface "Although some of the most gentlemanly people I have ever met are boxers, for Jona to go into a boxing gym as a woman is a very rare thing. I used to visit a gym out in Las Vegas called Johnny Tocco’s that had a sign which read "No Women Allowed." But Jona’s boxers let her have this experience. They wanted to share their moment of glory with her, and she in turn made heroes of them in her photographs. These pictures will be placed on the mantles and the walls in their homes. People will take notice. Their hard work will matter. Some people might confuse the realism of Jona’s work with a certain anti-romanticism. But she’s just bending the ideal by holding true to the photographer’s mantra keep your eyes open and be true to your heart."

"In 1989, I was a sophomore at NYU when I took my first photo class, “Color Printing”. My teacher was awesome and our first assignment was to watch the film “River’s Edge“. At the time, I was dating a girl who went to Stony Brook and I’d take the Long Island Railroad out to see her every other weekend. One weekend, shortly after I had started the class and had to find a subject for my class project, I happened to go to the Smith Haven Mall with her and immediately knew I’d found a place to shoot. I was a Religious Studies major who took a lot of anthropology and sociology courses, which helped me to think of the the mall in complex ways. I was especially interested in considering the mall as something of a privatized public square. While I focused on the people, I thought about the way that they interacted with each other and the space. The teacher loved the work and encouraged me to continue it that summer. So my friend Sebastian and I packed ourselves in his Corolla station wagon and we hit the road without any real plan at all. Our first stop was Columbus Ohio. We stayed with my aunt but we didn’t find a mall. We then hightailed it to Detroit where we hit the jackpot with the Woodfield Mall. It’s a beauty and there are probably a dozen in the book from that one. Next stop was Chicago- then South Dakota, and on and on. All in all, we hit about 15 malls. We got some great images but it wasn’t really their time. By 1989, the “Pictures Generation” – with its focus on more constructed and deconstructed images – had pushed street photography out of the galleries. They were doubling down on big ideas and conceptual work. I went on to take a couple other photo classes, but turned my attention to making music and making films. I shot a lot of images, but my main outlets for them were fanzines and album covers. I moved on to making films. "Born in 1945 in Illinois, Jim Ganzer is now widely known as a Malibu surf legend and an underground LA icon. He and his group of surf friends inspired the 1978 film, Big Wednesday, written and directed by John Milius. When the Coen brothers were developing The Big Lebowski, Milius introduced them to Ganzer, who influenced Jeff Bridges’s famous character, The Dude. A graduate of Chouinard Art Institute, Jim Ganzer emerged as an artist when the surf and skate culture-inspired world was not yet a billion-dollar industry, but an afterthought in a mostly hardware-focused segment. He became the voice of the subculture in the ’80s for inventing cult garments under the brand, Jimmy’Z, combining form with function. Ganzer collaborated with Ed Ruscha on several works, such as “Brave Men Run in My Family” and “Sea of Desire” and also starred in Ruscha’s film, Miracle. This is the lovely hardbound catalogue published in conjunction with the 1997 John Gossage exhibition entitled "There and Gone" that travelled from Hannover's Sprengel Museum to Chicago's Museum of Contemporary Photography at Columbia College. It features reproductions of each of the photographs shown, and includes a sixteen page insert containing a transcribed interview between Gossage and curator Thomas Weski. According to Chris Pichler, Nazraeli Press planned to produce a deluxe boxed edition of one hundred and forty-four copies with an ISBN separate from the trade edition - each retailing for nine hundred and fifty dollars and containing a single unique photograph from the one hundred and forty-four images in the book. Ten clamshell boxes were fabricated in Japan, and John Gossage agreed to produce and supply the prints as orders were received. Unfortunately, the first two copies ordered were returned to Nazraeli by the purchasers who objected to Mr. Gossage's insistence on splashing a few drops of coffee on the mat of each of the original prints as an artistic gesture, and the entire project was then scrapped. Only between three and five vintage completed copies of this near-unique edition exist. Using the photographic studio and some darkroom magic, the hirsute Grieger clad in jeans, desert boots, and a white t-shirt substitutes himself for artworks ranging from a Barnett Newman "zip" to one of Robert Irwin's illuminated disc paintings. The fifteen artists receiving these wry homages are Ronald Bladen, Tony DeLap, Robert Grosvenor, Irwin, Les Levine, Sol LeWitt, John McCracken, Robert Morris, Newman, Claes Oldenburg, Robert Rauschenberg, George Rickey, Richard Serra, Robert Smithson, and Ernest Trova. The "Impersonations" photographs were subsequently shown in MoMA's landmark 1970 Conceptual Art exhibition "Information", the 1972 Whitney Annual, "Los Angeles '72" at New York's Sidney Janis Gallery, and were the subject of a 2007 retrospective with catalogue at the Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art at Utah State University. The work fits in nicely with parallel body-centric photographic excursions by the likes of Bruce Nauman, Chris Burden and Vito Acconci - albeit with a more overt tongue in cheek approach. A bright, handsome example of this exceedingly uncommon - only five copies are currently cited in OCLC WorldCat - and underappreciated gem whose glossy white printed paper portfolio shows some typical creasing along the edges along with a slight stain at the upper right corner of the rear panel. Published in conjunction with a 1995 exhibition at Portikus Frankfurt am Main, this elegant, ambitiously designed, oversized publication is devoted to Andreas Gursky's monumental photograph of architect Jean Dubuisson's quarter-mile long Montparnasse housing block. A single 10 ¼ x 18 ¾" color reproduction on heavy stock is laid into a silver folder that bears the names of the more than seven hundred and fifty families inhabiting the massive housing project. This is accompanied by two booklets in silver wrappers: "Texte" - which contains an essay by Hans Irrek as well as interviews with Dubuisson and three Montparnasse dwellers, and "Images" - which reproduces grainy full page voyeuristic blown-up details of interiors of the individual apartments. These three printed components are housed in a shallow printed cardboard box. The interior contents are all in Near Fine condition with no notable flaws. The matte black paper-covered lower portion of the box along with the silver lid show some light overall wear, scuffs and minor abrasions, but no splits or tears to the corners as one typically sees. Due to its silver paper and fragile construction "Montparnasse" (cited on page 275 of Martin Parr and Gerry Badger's "The Photobook: A History Volume II") rarely turns up in beautiful condition, but this is truly a most handsome example of this uncommon item that looks far nicer in hand than it describes. 3-89611-003-9 Inventory Number: 020400
