WOLFGANG TILLMANS: TO LOOK WITHOUT FEAR

Onabanjo, Phil Taylor. Chronology by Phil Taylor, Andrew Vielkin. The Museum of Modern Art, New York, I00220827, 2022. 12 x 10 inches, 320 Pages. Hardcover. New.
Encompassing photography, installation, print media, video and more, this publication is the most comprehensive account of Tillmans’ wide-ranging career to date
A visionary creator and intrepid polymath, Wolfgang Tillmans unites formal inventiveness with an ethical orientation that attends to the most pressing issues of life today. While his work transcends the bounds of any single artistic discipline, he is best known for his wide-ranging photographic output. From trenchant documents of social movements to windowsill still lifes, ecstatic images of nightlife to cameraless abstractions, sensitive portraits to architectural studies, astronomical phenomena to intimate nudes, he has explored seemingly every genre of photography imaginable, continually experimenting with how to make new pictures and deepen the viewer’s experience.
Published in conjunction with a major exhibition of Tillmans’ work at the Museum of Modern Art, this copiously illustrated volume surveys four decades of the artist’s career. An outstanding group of writers offer diverse essays addressing key threads of his multifaceted practice, and a new text by Tillmans himself elucidates the distinctive methodology behind his system of presenting photographs. Wolfgang Tillmans: To look without fear grants readers new insight into the work of an artist who has not only changed the way photography is exhibited but pointed contemporary art in dynamic new directions. 9781633451117 Inventory Number: I00220827 -

ABECEDA DUSEVNIHO PRAZDNA (ALPHABET OF SPIRITUAL EMPTINESS)
(TMEJ, ZDENEK). Tmej, Zdenek & Alexandra Urbanova. Prague, CZECHOSLOVAKIA: Nakladatelstvi Za'Druha, a.s., 1946. First Edition 1/2500. 4to. Stiff Wrappers in Jacket. Photography Monograph. Good +./Fair.. np, 45 illustrations in b&w gravure. Designed by Rudolf Sabach. In a protective clear acetate dustwrapper. "ABECEDA Dusevniho Prazdna - "Alphabet of Spiritual Emptiness" is noted Czech photographer Zdenek Tmej's 1946 collaboration with writer Alexandra Urbanova reproducing the harrowing images of his experiences as a forced laborer for the Nazis in Breslau, Germany during the second World War. That Tmej, and these pictures survived to produce this moving book at the war's end is remarkable. An internally most presentable example of the first and only edition of this uncommon classic (cited on pages 198-199 of Martin Parr and Gerry Badger's "The Photobook: A History Volume I, pages 144-145 of The Hassleblad Center's "The Open Book: A History of the Photographic Book from 1878 to the Present", and pages 124-125 of "The Book of 101 Books") showing typical pronounced age-toning to the highly sulfurous textblock and stiff paper covers along with some attendant brown spotting to the first and last few pages. The book's fragile, photographically-illustrated jacket is present, though it has been heavily reinforced with clear tape on the verso. It is worn and creased with some closed tears and small missing chips along the top and bottom edges. In addition, there is some browning and spotting to the typographically-illustrated rear panel, and a three inch strip of the spine is missing. It is housed in a sumptuous custom black, decoratively-tooled goatskin-over-boards clamshell presentation box with four raised bands along with the author's name and book title in gilt along the spine. All in all, this is a sharp, internally solid copy of one of the most lauded post-war European photography books aided by the addition of a presentation box that looks far nicer in hand than it describes. Designed by the great Erik Kessels (of KesselsKramer renown), this is Roy Tzidon's idiosyncratic book of erotic photography set in Amsterdam's notorious Hans Brinker Budget Hotel. A favorite of students, backpackers and sightseers on a budget, the five hundred and thirty-four bed self-proclaimed "Worst Hotel in the World - now with even more dogshit in the main entrance" has been "proudly disappointing travellers for forty years". For two months in 2000 the photographer rented Room 412 - the only one in the entire establishment with a full bathtub - and invited Hotel staff, guests, and street performers to come up to the room to bathe with the proviso that they allow themselves to be photographed for public consumption. This book, used as promotion for the Hans Brinker Budget Hotel, is the result. A most handsome example of this uncommon, charming item in the publisher's custom-embroidered white terrycloth bag, as issued. Inventory Number: 021698

RUDY VANDERLANS: OLEANDER SUNSET
(VANDERLANS, RUDY). Gingko Press, I00210821, 2021. 5 x 7 inches, 256 Pages. Hardbound. New/No Jacket - As Issued.
Inspired by artists like Edward Curtis and Charles Schulz, who devoted their lives to a single objective, Rudy VanderLans continues his pursuit to create a consistent body of work of postcard-size images, rendering a comprehensive portrait of California in the early part of the 21st century.
VanderLans, who is often drawn to places with fantastical names — like Oleander Sunset —wanders about California’s back roads with eyes wide open. Without theorizing, or searching for subjects, he allows himself to be receptive to the world around him and discovers beauty in the most ordinary locales. Like the men who named the cities and towns he visits, VanderLans makes the mundane seem less so, and in the process shows us what’s been overlooked.
Oleander Sunset juxtaposes single images on opposing pages, setting up dynamic formal and contextual interactions through contrasting, complementing and reiteration. The book is interspersed with a number of fold-out panoramas, placing the viewer smack in the middle of the author’s habitual stamping ground. 9781584237594 Inventory Number: I00210821 -

WHY MISTER, WHY? GEERT VAN KESTEREN, IRAQ 2003-2004
(VAN KESTEREN, GEERT). van Kesteren, Geert & Michael Hirsh. Foreword by Jan Gruiters. Amsterdam, THE NETHERLANDS: Artimo, 2004. First Edition. 8vo. Pictorial Wrappers. Photography Monograph. Fine.. np (544pp), 245 color illustrations. Text in English and Arabic. "Why Mister, Why?" is a compelling account from Dutch photojournalist Geert van Kesteren. For the most part of 2003 and into 2004, van Kesteren made these images in a struggling Iraq, intertwining them with his personal experience of the situation in diary-like notes. In that way, this body of work resonates with an honesty found only when the narrator and photographer of a story are one and the same. The situation in Iraq, following the declaration of "mission accomplished," represented a culture clash of rare proportions, and van Kesteren was witness to what went wrong. He saw clouds of sadness coming from the mass graves created by the Saddam regime, while Shi'ites enjoyed their awakening freedom. Embedded within the ranks of US troops, he witnessed disgraceful raids on Iraqi citizens. And these accounts are presented here for the reader to see, feel, and try to understand. In a clear photojournalistic way, van Kesteren outlines why it will take a long time before the Iraqi people can enjoy the semblance of peace. Accompanying the images is an introduction by Newsweek senior editor Michael Hirsh, with whom Van Kesteren shared several tense moments in Iraq". A pristine copy (cited on page 241 of Martin Parr and Gerry Badger's "The Photobook: A History Volume II" and page 45 of "From Fair to Fine 3") of the English and Arabic language edition of this eccentrically bound gem. 90-8546-009-3 Inventory Number: 015220

DON VAN VLIET: RIDING SOME KIND OF UNUSUAL SKULL SLEIGH - DELUXE SLIPCASED EDITION WITH A SIGNED ETCHING
(VAN VLIET, DON aka CAPTAIN BEEFHEART) (CORBIJN, ANTON). Van Vliet, Don, Jan Van Vliet, Anton Corbijn & Ben Watson. Los Angeles: Artist Ink Editions, 2003. First Edition 1/1500 Deluxe. 4to. Linen Over Boards, Slipcased. Artist Monograph. As New/No Jackets - As Issued. 88 + 96pp, 1 audio CD + 1 DVD, profusely illustrated in color and b&w. Designed by Tim Eames. "Don Van Vliet aka Captain Beefheart was a visual artist before he was a musician. As a young child he drew serious accolades for his animal sculptures and was offered a scholarship to study in Europe. His parents declined; and while continuing to create in the visual medium, he turned his attention to music, within ten years forming the first incarnation of the legendary experimental outfit Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band. The following fifteen years are music history. But in 1983 Van Vliet retired from music to pursue painting and drawing, the focus of this extraordinary boxed set. "Riding Some Kind of Unusual Skull Sleigh" (named after a painting the artist completed in 1987) provides an opportunity to own one of his original, signed color etchings. Executed on paper and cataloged as "Untitled (Self-Portrait)", the work measures 6 5/8 x 9 ½". The paper itself measures 7 7/8 x 10 ½". Van Vliet produced only 1,500 copies of the piece, one for each individually numbered copy of this Artist Ink Edition. A deluxe 9 ¼ x 12 ¾ x 2 ¾" slipcase carefully houses the etching as well as two museum-quality books, a CD, and a DVD. The first book, entitled "Riding Some Kind of Unusual Skull Sleigh" (88 pages), is a monograph of sorts, containing an essay by art historian Ben Watson and full-color reproductions of sixty of Van Vliet's paintings and drawings - some of them previously unpublished. The second book, entitled "Splinters" (96 pages), features portrait photos of the artist by Anton Corbijn, along with a selection of personal archival material supplied by Don and Jan Van Vliet - including family snapshots, newspaper clippings, drawings, and sketches. None of this material has heretofore been seen. The CD features the artist reading eleven of his previously unreleased spoken-word pieces spanning 1977-1999, which are also reprinted in the Splinters book. The DVD features "Some YoYo Stuff", a 1994 filmed observation by Anton Corbijn. "Riding Some Kind Of Unusual Skull Sleigh is available only as an individually numbered limited edition of 1,500 copies". A brand new, pristine example of this remarkable undertaking still sealed in the publisher's original shipping carton. 0-7379-0284-1 Inventory Number: 027723
