"ABECEDA Dusevniho Prazdna - "Alphabet of Spiritual Emptiness" is noted Czech photographer Zdenek Tmej's 1946 collaboration with writer Alexandra Urbanova reproducing the harrowing images of his experiences as a forced laborer for the Nazis in Breslau, Germany during the second World War. That Tmej, and these pictures survived to produce this moving book at the war's end is remarkable. An internally most presentable example of the first and only edition of this uncommon classic (cited on pages 198-199 of Martin Parr and Gerry Badger's "The Photobook: A History Volume I, pages 144-145 of The Hassleblad Center's "The Open Book: A History of the Photographic Book from 1878 to the Present", and pages 124-125 of "The Book of 101 Books") showing typical pronounced age-toning to the highly sulfurous textblock and stiff paper covers along with some attendant brown spotting to the first and last few pages. The book's fragile, photographically-illustrated jacket is present, though it has been heavily reinforced with clear tape on the verso. It is worn and creased with some closed tears and small missing chips along the top and bottom edges. In addition, there is some browning and spotting to the typographically-illustrated rear panel, and a three inch strip of the spine is missing. It is housed in a sumptuous custom black, decoratively-tooled goatskin-over-boards clamshell presentation box with four raised bands along with the author's name and book title in gilt along the spine. All in all, this is a sharp, internally solid copy of one of the most lauded post-war European photography books aided by the addition of a presentation box that looks far nicer in hand than it describes. Internally it is bright and sound, with the textblock lightly browned along the edges and pulling ever so slightly at the signatures. The paper text volume shows some overall wear, light browning and soiling to the covers and edges, cracking along the spine, and a small closed tear to the foredge corner of the front cover. "Don Van Vliet aka Captain Beefheart was a visual artist before he was a musician. As a young child he drew serious accolades for his animal sculptures and was offered a scholarship to study in Europe. His parents declined; and while continuing to create in the visual medium, he turned his attention to music, within ten years forming the first incarnation of the legendary experimental outfit Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band. The following fifteen years are music history. But in 1983 Van Vliet retired from music to pursue painting and drawing, the focus of this extraordinary boxed set. "Riding Some Kind of Unusual Skull Sleigh" (named after a painting the artist completed in 1987) provides an opportunity to own one of his original, signed color etchings. The first book, entitled "Riding Some Kind of Unusual Skull Sleigh" (88 pages), is a monograph of sorts, containing an essay by art historian Ben Watson and full-color reproductions of sixty of Van Vliet's paintings and drawings - some of them previously unpublished. The second book, entitled "Splinters" (96 pages), features portrait photos of the artist by Anton Corbijn, along with a selection of personal archival material supplied by Don and Jan Van Vliet - including family snapshots, newspaper clippings, drawings, and sketches. Hearing Voices is a collection of lyrics by songwriting great Dean Wareham. Born in Wellington, New Zealand, Wareham moved to New York City as a teenager, in August 1977. It was here, in high school, that he met future bandmates Damon Krukowski and Naomi Yang. All three went on to attend Harvard University, and in 1987 founded Galaxie 500, for which Wareham was the singer, guitarist and principal songwriter. Galaxie 500 released three albums For Rough Trade between 1987 and 1991 that have only grown in stature and influence. Wareham’s next band Luna recorded seven albums for Elektra and Beggar’s Banquet, followed by four albums as Dean & Britta (with wife Britta Phillips), and three simply as Dean Wareham, including his most recent album I Have Nothing to Say to the Mayor of L.A. Also a writer, Wareham’s memoir, Black Postcards, was published by Penguin, and he has contributed to Salon, Pitchfork, the Talkhouse and Counterpunch. Hearing Voices is the first published collection of his lyrics, and is the result of a unique collaboration with the artist Ed Templeton, who created the illustrations for the book. Ed Templeton’s drawings, paintings and photographs have been widely exhibited and published in the United States, Europe and Asia. Hearing Voices is his fifth title with Nazraeli Press.
