"ABECEDA Dusevniho Prazdna - "Alphabet of Spiritual Emptiness" is noted Czech photographer Zdenek Tmej's 1946 collaboration with writer Alexandra Urbanova reproducing the harrowing images of his experiences as a forced laborer for the Nazis in Breslau, Germany during the second World War. That Tmej, and these pictures survived to produce this moving book at the war's end is remarkable. An internally most presentable example of the first and only edition of this uncommon classic (cited on pages 198-199 of Martin Parr and Gerry Badger's "The Photobook: A History Volume I, pages 144-145 of The Hassleblad Center's "The Open Book: A History of the Photographic Book from 1878 to the Present", and pages 124-125 of "The Book of 101 Books") showing typical pronounced age-toning to the highly sulfurous textblock and stiff paper covers along with some attendant brown spotting to the first and last few pages. The book's fragile, photographically-illustrated jacket is present, though it has been heavily reinforced with clear tape on the verso. It is worn and creased with some closed tears and small missing chips along the top and bottom edges. In addition, there is some browning and spotting to the typographically-illustrated rear panel, and a three inch strip of the spine is missing. It is housed in a sumptuous custom black, decoratively-tooled goatskin-over-boards clamshell presentation box with four raised bands along with the author's name and book title in gilt along the spine. All in all, this is a sharp, internally solid copy of one of the most lauded post-war European photography books aided by the addition of a presentation box that looks far nicer in hand than it describes. In addition to the gripping hardbound volume of images, it contains a second English language publication in wrappers reprinting scholarly articles by Kiyoshi Sakuma, Nobuo Kusano, Toshio Hata on the radiation and its effects. A serviceable example only of this remarkable Post-War Japanese photographic book (cited on pages 274-75 of Martin Parr and Gerry Badger's "The Photobook: A History Volume I and as entry 270 in Manfred Heiting and Ryuichi Kaneko's "The Japanese Photobook 1912-1990") lacking the publisher's slipcase, and whose primary volume's off-white exterior is browned along the spine, moderately soiled, and exhibits notable insect damage to the ink of its decorative design of concentric circles. Internally it is bright and sound, with the textblock lightly browned along the edges and pulling ever so slightly at the signatures. The paper text volume shows some overall wear, light browning and soiling to the covers and edges, cracking along the spine, and a small closed tear to the foredge corner of the front cover. Hearing Voices is a collection of lyrics by songwriting great Dean Wareham. Born in Wellington, New Zealand, Wareham moved to New York City as a teenager, in August 1977. It was here, in high school, that he met future bandmates Damon Krukowski and Naomi Yang. All three went on to attend Harvard University, and in 1987 founded Galaxie 500, for which Wareham was the singer, guitarist and principal songwriter. Galaxie 500 released three albums For Rough Trade between 1987 and 1991 that have only grown in stature and influence. Wareham’s next band Luna recorded seven albums for Elektra and Beggar’s Banquet, followed by four albums as Dean & Britta (with wife Britta Phillips), and three simply as Dean Wareham, including his most recent album I Have Nothing to Say to the Mayor of L.A. Also a writer, Wareham’s memoir, Black Postcards, was published by Penguin, and he has contributed to Salon, Pitchfork, the Talkhouse and Counterpunch. Hearing Voices is the first published collection of his lyrics, and is the result of a unique collaboration with the artist Ed Templeton, who created the illustrations for the book. Ed Templeton’s drawings, paintings and photographs have been widely exhibited and published in the United States, Europe and Asia. Hearing Voices is his fifth title with Nazraeli Press. Starr left studio work to write regular columns for "The Los Angeles Herald-Express", "New York Daily Mirror", and "Sunday Daily Mirror" before leaving town entirely for a successful career in Arizona with Ramada Inns. Weegee, following the success of Jules Dassin's 1948 feature "Naked City" - based on his pioneering 1945 photobook of the same title - moved to Los Angeles with the expectation of trading the late-night Manhattan crime and street photography he'd grown weary of for more lucrative process photography and cinematography jobs with the Hollywood studios. While there was some behind the scenes work along with few bit parts to be had, Weegee was primarily reliant on making distorted trick portraits of the likes of Marilyn Monroe and Jayne Mansfield to sell to magazines to make ends meet. In late 1951, newly-divorced he returned to New York where he remained active until his passing in 1968. A bright, fine condition vintage silver gelatin print on single weight glossy paper bearing the stamps "Arthur (Weegee) Fellig / 6606 St. Frances Terrace / Hollywood 28, Calif." in red and "FROM THE / JIMMY STARR COLLECTION" in purple ink on the verso. This was most likely a gift from Weegee to Starr, and as there was very little chance of selling this shot from the series for publication, there cannot be many - if any - other prints of this particular image in circulation.
