FRITZ SCHOLDER: AN ARCHIVE OF SIXTY BOOKS, CATALOGUES, BROCHURES, ANNOUNCEMENTS, PRINT PROSPECTUSES, AND EPHEMERA
(SCHOLDER, FRITZ). Scholder, Fritz, et al.. Various (primarily Santa Fe, NM). 1971-1973.: Various Publishers (including Elaine Horwitch Galleries, Marilyn Butler Fine Art, Gallery 10, etc.). Various Editions - Primarily Firsts. 12mo + 8vo + 4to. Wrappers. Artist Monographs. Very Good -. or Better. This is a collection of sixty pieces of printed documentation on the work of the pioneering late Contemporary Native American artist Fritz Scholder. It consists of two paperbound books (the 1972 Smithsonian monograph "Indians" and the 1975 Northland Press survey of Scholder's own photographs, "Indian Kitsch: The Use and Misuse of Indian Images"), fourteen exhibition catalogues issued between 1972 and 1991, fourteen slender print prospectuses (including Tamarind's "Indians Forever" and Mourlot's "Indian in Paris" which include loose miniature reproductions) and gallery exhibition brochures from 1971 and 1987, twenty-three larger folded exhibition announcements from 1976 to 1992, six postcard announcements, and a 1976 issue of 3M's "Where: A Travelaide Publication" for Phoenix that features the painting "Sitting Indian" on the front cover. "Controversial and prolific, Fritz Scholder (1937-2005) embraced paradox. An enrolled member of the Luiseno tribe, he often said he was not Indian. Scholder's works were immediately recognized for their insight and powerful commentary on publicly held stereotypes of Native Americans and propelled Scholder into a position of prominence as an artist. His revolutionary paintings broke away from stereotypical roles and forever changed the concept of "Indian artist". This group of documentary materials gives great insight to Scholder's work and exhibition activities of the seventies and eighties - including a wealth of items from the artist's primary galleries of the period including Elaine Horwitch Galleries, Marilyn Butler Fine Art, Jack O' Grady Galleries, Tally Richards, Gallery 10, Louis Newman, and Gerald Peters. Overall these pieces are in at least Very Good Minus condition, though many of the announcement were mailed and bear the recipients' addresses and postal indicia. SIMONE SHUBUCK
(SHUBUCK, SIMONE). Shubuck, Simone, Janine Foeller, Jim Dempsey & Alex Wagner. New York, NY: Self-published. Printed in Poland by Szaransky, 2018. First Edition. 4to. Debossed Cloth. Artist Monograph. As New/No Jacket - As Issued.
"In the summer of 2017, Simone Shubuck launched WIFEY, a Brooklyn pop up that fused art, food, ceramics, flowers, and bit of retail in an elevated DIY way. During the process, Shubuck realized that so much of what she was doing directly connected to a show she staged as a student at the San Francisco Art Institute in the early 1990s. Wanting to formalize that multi-decade connection, she decided to make a book.
While at the Art institute, Shubuck studied painting, but probably spent more time tagging on the streets in the middle of the night than in her studio. When it came time to produce her student show, she constructed ten very unusual fake cakes festooned with pink ham hocks, a school of fresh sardines, a tent of chicken feet, and live crickets within a hat box within a cake. It was these images that attracted chefs Ignacio Mattos and Natasha Pickowicz of Estela, Flora Bar, and Cafe Altro Paradiso to the project. They became partners and began experimenting with dreamy layers cakes, which were served at WIFEY and were met with great acclaim.
As described by Ella Riley-Adams on Vogue.com: "She had made a paged project before; a short run of 'zines for Natasha Pickowicz’s bake sale benefit at Altro Paradiso. “It had more of a punk vibe,” Shubuck says—150 copies, printed in Chinatown. The new book feels more like a collector’s item: a retrospective of off-kilter cakes, blossoming drawings, and character-filled ceramics that charts Shubuck’s creative course that would make the ideal gift for the cool girl in your life. As Alex Wagner writes, next to a bright yellow page in the book: “Simone’s work - on paper, in clay, in life! - retains a glorious sense of mess and possibility and freedom.”
Includes texts by Janine Foeller, Jim Dempsey, and Alex Wagner.

JACK SMITH AND THE DESTRUCTION OF ATLANTIS (DVD)
(SMITH, JACK). Jordan, Mary, Director. New York: Arthouse Films, 2007. Edition Not Stated - Presumed First. 8vo. NTSC DVD in Plastic Case. Documentary Film. As New/No Jacket - As Issued. 95 minutes + extras, in color. "Perhaps America's most important artist from the last fifty years, Jack Smith is simultaneously hailed as the godfather of performance art, a groundbreaking photographer, and the 'William Blake of film'. His utopian ideals, artistic processes and bejeweled artworks left no generation untouched since, and became essential influences to contemporary art superstars like Andy Warhol, Federico Fellini, and Matthew Barney. In her feature-length film debut, director Mary Jordan combines Smith's rare and unseen films and photographs with rare audio recordings, acting appearances, and other relics squeezed from Smith's vaulted archives. Commentaries from art luminaries, critics and Smith's friends and enemies such as George Kuchar, Ken Jacobs, Tony Conrad, Sylvere Lotringer, Judith Malina, Jonas Mekas, Mario Montez, Ronald Tavel, John Waters, John Zorn, Agosto Machado, Andrew Sarris, Ari Roussimoff, Billy Name, Ela Troyano, Gary Indiana, George Kuchar, Helen Gee, Henry Hills, Maria Montez, Andrew Sarris, Holly Woodlawn, Ira Cohen, Ivan Galietti, Jerry Tartaglia, John Matturri, John Vaccaro, Lawrence Rinder, Mary Woronov, Mike Kelley, Nayland Blake, Nick Zedd, Richard Foreman, Robert Heide, Robert Wilson, Taylor Mead, Tommy Lanigan-Schmidt, Uzi Parnes, and William Niederkorn intercut Smith himself proffering condemnations of capitalism, critics, and institutional-art "gatekeepers". Jordan also delves into Smith's tenuous relationship with Andy Warhol - who adopted Smith's ideas and actors in his own work (including Smith's "Superstars" concept), his vilification of New American cinema pioneer Jonas Mekas, and other previously undocumented biographical topics. From the Whitney to the Louvre, Smith is acknowledged as one of America's most influential artists, yet his legacy remains at the edges of obscurity. Pure in his artistic pursuits, Smith smashed head-on into the politics intersecting creativity, capitalism, and meaning in contemporary art. Since his 1989 death, Smith's work has been rarely publicly displayed. Still his influence pervades contemporary art and pop-culture today. This documentary portrait pays homage to New York's ultimate anti-hero and the original King of the Underground". A brand new, pristine unplayed example of this DVD in letterbox format still in the manufacturer's shrinkwrapped plastic case. Inventory Number: 018984
