SEMINA 7 (ALEPH / A GESTURE INVOLVING PHOTOGRAPHS, DRAWINGS & TEXT BY WALLACE BERMAN)
(BERMAN, WALLACE) (SEMINA). Berman, Wallace. Larkspur, CA: Self-Published, 1961. First Edition 1/200. 8vo. Chipboard Portfolio. Artist's Periodical. Good.. np, 18 individual inserts printed offset on cardstock or paper housed a printed paper pocket, 11 monochrome illustrations + front cover. This seventh installment of "Semina" - Wallace Berman's legendary, and legendarily scarce handmade literary and art periodical - is subtitled "Aleph". Published in Larkspur in 1961, unlike its predecessors that anthologized work from the movers and shakers of the West Coast Beat scene, this number is entirely devoted entirely to contributions by Berman himself. It is comprised of eighteen loose reproductions of photographs, drawings, and text - many of which combine these elements. A complete, internally handsome example of this exceedingly uncommon item limited to two hundred unnumbered copies. The eleven photographic reproductions on cardstock are bright and fresh, while several of the text pieces printed on matte paper show typical minor soiling, offsetting, and age-toning. The printed white pocket into which these are gathered is still securely affixed to the inside rear cover. Externally, the title pastedown on the front cover shows some mild rubbing and foxing, and the brittle, highly acidic chipboard covers have light overall wear, age-toning, and soiling. More notably, the covers have separated cleanly along the length of the spine, and there are two triangular chips of paper loss along the bottom edge - one on the rear at the heel of the spine, and a tiny one at the foredge front corner. Both detached fragments are present, and we have decided to let the next owner deal with their preferences for any paper restoration. All in all, this is a most presentable copy of a truly remarkable Wallace Berman item that looks far nicer in hand than it describes that has been priced accordingly. Inventory Number: 026125

INFIDEL - FIRST EDITION SIGNED BY TIM HETHERINGTON

Fine/No Jacket - As Issued. 240pp, profusely illustrated in color and b&w. Designed by SMITH. "Infidel" is an intimate portrait of a single U.S. platoon assigned to an outpost in the Korengal Valley - an area considered one of the most dangerous Afghan postings in the war against the Taliban - but it is as much about love and male vulnerability as it is about bravery and war. Embedded with writer Sebastian Junger, and shooting over the course of one year, the late photographer Tim Hetherington made a series of images that prove surprisingly tender in their depiction of camaraderie and vulnerability. Alongside revealing interviews with Hetherington's subjects and an introduction by Junger (with whom Hetherington co-directed the award-winning film "Restrepo" about the work of the battalion), the book is also illustrated with graphics of the tattoos the soldiers gave each other in the camp. The title is taken from the tattoo the men adopted as a badge of their comradeship. Warm, moving and full of humor, this book is a tribute to the "rough men ready to do violence on our behalf" and a provocative contribution to the documentation of war in our time". A brand new, most handsome example of the exceedingly uncommon 2010 first edition of this gritty modern classic (cited on page 208 of Martin Parr and Gerry Badger's "The Photobook: A History Volume III") additionally SIGNED "Tim Hetherington" in black ink on the title page at our shop during one of the photographer's visits. 1-905712-18-9 Inventory Number: 026015

(BYARS, JAMES LEE). Byars, James Lee, James Butler, Harald Szeeman, Dr. Reiner Speck & Morgan Thomas. Los Angeles: Foundation for Art Resources, Inc. (FAR), 1980. First Edition 1/500. Large Square 4to. Unprinted Wrappers. Artist's Book with Multiple. Fine.. np, 17 b&w illustrations. Text in English. This truly unusual James Lee Byars item was produced in an edition of five hundred copies in 1980 by the Los Angeles non-profit Arts organization Foundation for Art Resources, Inc. The publication's primary funding came from an NEA grant that was written in such a way that prevented the actual sale of the book itself! This untitled publication is referred to as "The White Book", and was conceived with the artist's collaboration as an expanded version of the 1978 Kunsthalle Bern exhibition catalogue that was a full documentation of Byars' public performance pieces from 1963 through 1975. Laid in to the book is the unique multiple artwork "The Exhibition of Perfect", which disperses in a rather surprising way when the book is opened. Approximately three hundred of these were sent hors commerce to Museums, Art Libraries, Non-Profit Arts organizations and friends and supporters of FAR. It was never made commercially available - one had to receive this as a gift at the time of publication. The remaining copies languished with the publisher, never having been assembled with the artwork or distributed, and have ultimately disappeared. A bright white, near pristine example of this exceedingly uncommon - only nine copies are currently cited in OCLC WorldCat - and desirable James Lee Byars gem. Inventory Number: 025973
