A SELECTION OF FIFTY WORKS FROM THE COLLECTION OF ROBERT C. SCULL
(SCULL COLLECTION). Sotheby Parke Bernet Staff. New York: Sotheby Parke Bernet, 1973. First Edition. 4to. Cloth in Pictorial Dust Jacket. Auction Catalog. Near Fine/Very Good -. np (118pp), 40 color and 10 b&w illustrations. This is the auction catalogue documenting the historic Thursday, October 18th 1973 sale of fifty blue chip works from the pioneering collection of Robert C. - and his here-uncredited wife Ethel - Scull. This single evening kickstarted the secondary market for Post-war Contemporary Art by living American artists, especially those of the Pop persuasion; and resulted in the infamous heated confrontation between Robert Rauschenberg and the newly enriched Mr. Scull captured in Emile D'Antonio's documentary "Painters Painting". The sale included works by Lee Bontecou, John Chamberlain (2), Dan Christensen (2), Willem de Kooning (3), Walter De Maria, Jim Dine, Mark di Suvero, Philip Guston, Robert Indiana, Jasper Johns (6), Franz Kline, Robert Morris (2), Barnett Newman (2), Claes Oldenburg (2), Larry Poons (2), Robert Rauschenberg (2), Larry Rivers, James Rosenquist (2), Lucas Samaras (2), George Segal, Frank Stella (3), Ernest Trova, Cy Twombly, Andy Warhol (2), Tom Wesselmann (2), and Peter Young. An internally most handsome example of this uncommon document with the some soiling to the rear panel of the dust jacket. Sotheby Parke Bernet's original four page estimate and bidding sheet that shows the original owner's ink annotations from the evening of the auction is inserted loosely.
