SLASH: VOLUME ONE, NUMBER ONE (MAYDAY ISSUE 5/77)
(SLASH MAGAZINE). Samiof, Steve & Melanie Nissen, Editor & Publisher. Los Angeles: Slash, 1977. First Edition. Folio. Illustrated Tabloid Wrappers. Music Periodical. Very Good.. 20pp, profusely illustrated in b&w and duotone. Cover image of Dave Vanian. Running for thirty issues between 1977 and 1980, "Slash" magazine was the go to publication for news on the Los Angeles Punk scene. Founded by Steve Samiof and Melanie Nissen, and transgressively edited by Claude "Kickboy Face" Bessy and Philomena, it is notable for its mix of great photographs, band interviews, live and record reviews from the city's burgeoning scene, along with cartoons and great period ads. This very first installment features the iconic, much appropriated (most recently for Playboi Carti's "Whole Lotta Red" mixtape) high-contrast cover image of The Damned's Dave Vanian, along with contributions by or about The Damned, Backstage Pass, The Motels, "Kickboy Kicks Back", The Screamers (with Trudie), Iggy Pop, Sex Pistols, The Clash, Television, and many more. A handsome, well-preserved example of this landmark premiere issue showing just a bit of age-toning to the newsprint pages along with some minor fraying of the extremities. Inventory Number: 026891
