    EPI-HAB SALUTES HOWARD HUGHES (1905-1976)

(HUGHES, HOWARD). Sederberg, Arelo, Lawrence A. Hyland, General Ira C. Eaker, Frank Risch, Ph.D., James Bacon, et. al,. Los Angeles: EPI-HAB, L.A., Inc., 1976. First Edition 1/500. 4to. Pictorial Wrappers. Cinema Monograph. Near Fine.. np (92pp), profusely illustrated in b&w. "Howard Robard Hughes Jr. was an American business magnate, investor, record-setting pilot, engineer, film director and studio magnate, and philanthropist, known during his lifetime as one of the most financially successful individuals in the world. He first became prominent as a film producer, and then as an influential figure in the aviation industry." EPI-HAB Inc. was founded in 1958 as a non-profit organization with the mission to provide meaningful employment to individuals with epilepsy by performing valued work for customers. On February 19th 1977, the Los Angeles chapter of the organization produced a posthumous, celebrity-studded "tribute Ball for Howard Hughes" at The Century Plaza Hotel to celebrate the life and accomplishments of Howard Hughes. "EPI-HAB LA Salutes Howard Hughes (!905-1976)" is the souvenir program that was published a few months after the actual event. It features dozens of tribute ads (most from the Hughes Corporation, its Hotels, and various subsidiaries), scores of historical Hughes photos and press clippings (none from later than 1952), and most interestingly, nearly one hundred photographs of the civic movers and shakers that organized and attended the event. These included John Wayne, Jimmy Stewart, Jayne Russell. Virginia Mayo, Mel Torme, Lorne Greene, Ann Miller, Cyd Charisse, Carlotta Monti, Mrs. Harry (Sybil) Brand, Mrs. Jackie (Barbara) Cooper, Mrs. Jack (Emily) LaLanne, Mrs. Mervyn (Kitty) LeRoy, Mrs. Lloyd (Mell) Nolan, Mrs. David (Barbara) Simmons, Mrs. Rudy (Eleanor) Vallee, Mrs. Del (Toni) Webb, and many, many more. A bright, most handsome example of this exceedingly uncommon item stated as having been limited to five hundred unnumbered copies which were seemingly never meaningfully distributed that is neither in the holdings of the Margaret Herrick Library of The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences nor does it appear in OCLC WorldCat.
