CYNTHIA MACADAMS: EMERGENCE - A BOLDLY SIGNED AND DATED PRESENTATION COPY FROM THE PHOTOGRAPHER
(MACADAMS, CYNTHIA). MacAdams, Cynthia. Introduction by Kate Millett. With a Poem by Diane di Prima. New York: Chelsea House Publishers, 1977. First Edition. 4to. Cloth in Pictorial Dust Jacket. Artist Monograph. Near Fine/Very Good. 120pp, 110 b&w illustrations. Designed by Susan Lusk. Cynthia MacAdams' "Emergence" is perhaps the classic photographic document of the emerging American feminist landscape of the seventies. Featuring portraits of over one hundred women drawn from all walks of life, it presents strong yet naturalistic black and white portraits - several nude - of the decade's cultural influencers. Amongst its more recognizable sitters are contributors MacAdams, Kate Millett and Diane di Prima, Patti Smith, Michelle Phillips, Barbara Hammer, Lily Tomlin, Lee Grant, Shirley Knight, Shelley Winters, Jane Fonda, Carole Bayer Sager, (Marjorie) Cameron, Rita Mae Brown, Johanna Demetrakis, Twinka Thiebaud, Sally Kirkland, Jean Pagliuso, Susan Tyrrell, Judy Chicago, Ann Waldman, Ellen Burstyn, Meredith Monk, Chris Williamson, Marisol Escobar, Alice Neel, Viveca Lindfors, Sarie Dienes, Gloria Steinem, Margo St. John, Mary Ellen Mark, and Laurie Anderson. "Emergence" provided the basis of filmmaker Johanna Demetrakis' 2018 Netflix documentary "Feminists: What Were They Thinking?" A handsome example of this uncommon item additionally bearing the BOLDLY SIGNED AND DATED PRESENTATION "dear david / many years / many more / much love / cynthia / march 22, 78" in blue ink on the title page showing some wear, creasing, and a few short closed tears to the extremities of the dust jacket. 0-87754-057-8 Inventory Number: 026201
