    LEE FRIEDLANDER: THE AMERICAN MONUMENT

(FRIEDLANDER, LEE). Friedlander, Lee & Leslie George Katz. With a brief text by Walt Whitman. New York: Eakins Press Foundation, 1976. First Edition 1/2000. Oblong Folio. Cloth Over Boards. Photography Monograph. As New/No Jacket - As Issued. np (78pp), 213 b&w gravure illustrations. "The American Monument" is Lee Friedlander's groundbreaking portfolio of striking images of statues and memorials taken across the United States during the early seventies. Uniquely bound in gilt-embossed cloth-over-boards with sumptuous printing by The Meriden Gravure Company from half-tone negatives made by Richard Benson, it certainly ranks among the great American photography books of the Twentieth Century. A brand new, pristine example of this impressive tome (cited on pages 310-311 of The Hasselblad Center's "The Open Book", page 28 of Martin Parr and Gerry Badger's "The Photobook: A History Volume II", page 35 of "From Fair to Fine", and pages 236-237 of "The Book of 101 Books") still in the publisher's shrinkwrap and cardboard shipping carton showing none of the typical sunning associated with this title. A Fine condition copy of Lee Friedlander's "Fourteen American Monuments" catalogue published by the Eakins Press Foundation has been additionally laid in. 0-87130-045-1 Inventory Number: 022130
