Herman Leonard's first monograph, "The Eye of Jazz", presents a major selection of smoky, sumptuous portraits of the crème de la crème of the postwar American Jazz scene. Featured are Art Tatum, Charlie Parker, Clifford Brown, Bud Powell, Buddy Rich, Art Blakey, Chet Baker, Count Basie, Dexter Gordon, Dinah Washington, Dizzy Gillespie, Duke Ellington, Frank Sinatra, Ben Webster, Joe Williams, Nat King Cole, Billie Holliday, Lena Horne, Max Roach, Miles Davis, Lester Young, Quincy Jones, Ray Brown, Louis Armstrong, Sarah Vaughan, Stan Getz, Stan Kenton, Thelonious Monk and dozens more. An internally most handsome example of the 1989 third Viking printing additionally BOLDLY SIGNED AND DATED "Herman Leonard '91" in black marker on the title page bearing an inch long dent and tear to the top edge of the rear board whose dust jacket shows a closed tear and some creasing along the top edge.
