Between 2017 and 2020, street artist and political activist Banksy issued an unknown number of limited edition art objects in Palestine, only available to guests staying at the Walled Off Hotel in Bethlehem. Like the hotel, these hand-painted polymer resin multiples were intended to highlight the living conditions of the Palestinian people. The miniatures were created by Banksy, who supervised decorations carried out by Palestinian artists – copies of the iconic graffiti he has painted on the wall closing off the West Bank. Through his research in Palestine and various collections and archives, Marc Pairon uncovers detailed information about this highly coveted series of collectibles.

Appearing in conjunction with an exhibition of work by Olafur Eliasson at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, this book presents an in-depth look at his practice and thought. The Danish-Icelandic artist and designer has become one of the foremost creators in his field, often using elemental materials such as light, water, and air temperature to enhance the viewer’s experience. The book offers documentation of nine public projects, including several of his large-scale installation art projects as well as other series. His works explore colour theory and the dynamics of melting ice, or strategically deployed mirrors in the city and the interplay of water, movement, and light.

Between 2014 and 2019, Ari Marcopoulos documented the Conrad McRae Youth League Tournament at Dean Street Playground in Brooklyn, New York. Players from age six and older can participate in the tournament, which features some of the best high school basketball players from the greater New York City area. His individual and group portraits of the players, staff, and audience are interspersed with action-filled shots of the games, while the tournament jersey with its small “Jumpman” logo (inspired by Michael Jordan) becomes the series’ predominant theme. In both posed and candid shots we see players poised, ready to hit the court, or sweating in the summer heat.

Presenting film stills, collages, drawings, notes, and sketches, ‘Anamorphosis’ is informed by Indian artist Praneet Soi’s travels in Israel and Palestine while searching for alternative representations of a territory under occupation. In his work, Soi is keen to explore the term “anamorphosis” as a metaphor for distorted representations arising from politicized subject matter. Palestine is experienced through facets of landscape, productivity, and enterprise, and placed in dialogue with Soi’s ongoing engagement with craftsmen in Kashmir. His work surmises that any representation of such landscapes is a political gesture. The book is published with his first solo exhibition in London.

For many, the lockdown period has meant spending much more time at home, which has probably led to deeper contemplations of floor coverings. From the panorama of our rugs we have experienced press conferences, video calls, board games, napping, and so much more. This issue looks at the infinite functions, meanings, and possibilities of the rug the world over, from George Pendle’s revelations about airport carpets to Rachel Dedman’s analysis of Palestinian rug-making traditions, from stories of carpet dealers by Kitty Drake to a complex case of gender and weaving by Alice Twemlow, and from tatami mats, prayer rugs, and tapestries to the animal kingdom beneath our feet.

Culled from over 24,000 photographs, the book provides a dynamic visual window into the social, domestic, and economic aspects of the American Western frontier and captures an elusive sense of place through the images of this community of friends, families, and strangers.

Edited by Will Holder, the constellation of material in this issue collectively philosophises on topics that deal with difference and the transformative processes between things. It essentially puts forth the notion of the intellectual as a transitional identity. Contributions from various contemporary, historical, and even ancient authors and sources include George Orwell, Simone Weil, Apuleius, Ian Hamilton Finlay, Alan Stanbridge, John Cage, Bernadette Mayer, Anne Carson, Barbara Guest, Jenn Ashworth, Lewis Hyde, and many others. The volume begins with an introduction by Charles Bernstein and concludes with an afterword by Robert Duncan.

Michael Ackerman’s first publication since his acclaimed book ‘Half Life’ (2010) features works from his debut project ‘End Time City’ combined with previously unpublished material. ‘Epilogue’ is a recollection of his past and future universe, and its more than 130 images offer a unique opportunity to catch a glimpse of Ackerman’s most recent works. A text by Jem Cohen, an old friend of the artist, gives readers an insider’s view of his practice and personality. The book’s large-format pages encourage getting lost in the labyrinths of his images, an intimate confrontation with his exploration of time and timelessness, personal history and the history of places.

‘Tokyo Papers’ comprises a collection of 41 monoprints created by Dutch graphic designer and typographer Karel Martens between 2019 and 2020. In 2018, Martens received a package from artist-curator Pierre Leguillon that contained filled-in Japanese forms which he had found at a street market in Tokyo. Martens was intrigued by the collection of thin paper with a rectangular black-blue layer of carbon on the back. In 2019 he started to print on these back sides, but because the overprinting on the carbon layer caused unwanted damage, he switched to printing them on the front sides as well. “The closing image is related to Tokyo in a different way,” he explains.

A book dedicated to the muse of photographer Bruno Stettler, Corinne (aka Colli, Coco, Acid), with whom he worked between 1980 and 1986. A key figure in Zurich’s party scene in the 1980s, she played a pivotal role in getting the photographer access to numerous celebrity figures and musicians, among them David Bowie, Public Enemy, Motorhead, and the Beastie Boys. Corinne, who passed away in 2016 at the age of 53, was not just a party girl, groupie, and model – she would also take on different personalities. In private portraits and snapshots from backstage or out the city, Stettler captures her many facets, her kinetic, one-of-a-kind character, and her femme fatale allure.

This issue examines one of the most ubiquitous, widely recognised and popular fruits on the planet. Large-scale farming has made this tropical fruit accessible almost year-round in most countries, while its near-phallic shape frequently stirs the sexual imagination of fully-grown adults. But perhaps one of the most interesting aspects of the banana is its role in the beginning and end of our lives; its soft, easy-to-mash texture makes it suitable for both teething babies and the toothless elderly. Learn everything about the banana, from its ripeness and size, to how to peel, handle, and store it. Humorous but informative illustrations and photos complete this authoritative banana guide.

Digital technology predominates in every realm of our daily lives: humanoid robots are deployed in healthcare, sex robots compensate for deficits in human relations, intelligent appliances listen to our conversations and look after our needs… the list goes on. It seems we communicate more with technology than with other human beings. ‘Real Feelings’ explores the swiftly changing relationship between technology and emotions, presenting works by 20 artists from around the globe that explore how technology represents and manipulates our feelings, even to the point of being able to change them. With works by Justine Emard, Lucy McRae, Liam Young, Maija Tammi, and more.
