BIG STAR: MAY 1977 / VOLUME ONE, NUMBER ONE
(BIG STAR). Kugel, Bernard, Editor. Buffalo, NY: Big Star, 1977. First Edition. 4to. Stapled Xeroxed Wrappers. Music Periodical. Near Fine.. 18pp, profusely illustrated in b&w. In a protective clear acetate dustwrapper. Cover image of The Ramones by Danny Fields. In the spirit of 1977's Punk revolution, DIY fanzine "Big Star" was the brainchild of Buffalo New York's Bernard Kugel. This first installment - of three issues total - acknowledges Alex Chilton for the title choice, opines on the front cover that "ROCK IS THE ONLY WAY OF LIFE!!", and backs it up with single-sided Xeroxed editorial coverage of Tom Verlaine from Television, Richard Hell, Willie Alexander's Boom Boom Band and the Boston Music scene, The Gizmos, The Ramones, Cheap Trick, Damned, Dave Edmunds, and more. A most handsome, well-preserved example of "Big Star"'s exceedingly uncommon premiere issue featuring a hand-lettered full page Ork Records rear cover advertisement showing just a bit of age-toning along the extremities.
