POST-GRAFFITI
Janis, Sidney & Dolores Neumann. New York: Sidney Janis Gallery, 1983. First Edition. 4to. Stapled Illustrated Wrappers. Exhibition Catalog. Fine.. np (20pp), 17 b&w illustrations + front and rear cover illustrations by Crash. With an exhibition checklist. In a protective clear acetate dustwrapper. This is the slender twenty page catalogue issued in conjunction with the Sidney Janis Gallery's prescient 1983 show of thirty-six works by seventeen artists presented in an established blue-chip gallery space - many for the first time. Hot on the heels of the emergence of Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring, "Post-Graffiti" was one of the very first New York exhibitions to bring imagery typically produced for subways and trains into the gallery context - one that helped bring artistic legitimacy to the city's burgeoning East Village, hip hop, and graffiti art movements of the early eighties. The stellar participants were "A-One" (Anthony Clark), Jean-Michel Basquiat, "Bear" (Kwame Monroe), Marc Brasz, Crane, "Crash" (John Matos), "Daze" (Chris Ellis), "Futura 2000" (Leonard McGurr), Keith Haring, "The Arbitrator Koor" (Charles Hargrove), "Lady Pink" (Sandra Fabara), Don Leicht, "NOC 167" (Melvin Samuels, Jr.), Lee Quinones, "Rammellzee" (Stephen Piccirello), Kenny Scharf, and "Toxic" (Torrick Ablack), A brand new, most handsome example of this exceedingly uncommon and important document.
