MARTIN KIPPENBERGER: 1984. WIE ES WIRKLICH WAR AM BEISPIEL KNOKKE
(KIPPENBERGER, MARTIN). Kippenberger, Martin & Sophia Ungers. Frankfurt, GERMANY: Galerie Barbel Grasslin, 1985. First Edition 1/1000. 16mo. Printed Wrappers. Artist's Book. Near Fine.. 52pp, 11 b&w illustrations. Designed by Studio Schneider. Text in German. With a bibliography. Designed in the format of the popular "Reklam Universalbiliothek" series of German reprints of literary classics, "1984. Wie es wirklich war am Bespiel Knokke" is a wry artist book cum travelogue documenting in absentia Martin Kippenberger's 1984 holiday in Knokke, Belgium. For the book Kippenberger commissioned travel writer Annette Grothkasten to recreate the artist's five day stay and ghost-write a journal of his imagined experiences there. The text is accompanied by eleven "Hustler"-esque mens' magazine cartoons of varying degrees of taste as well as a brief essay by Sophia Ungers. A handsome example of the 1985 Galerie Barbel Grasslin first edition (entry number thirty in Uwe Koch's "Annotated catalogue raisonné of the Books by Martin Kippenberger 1977 - 1997") of this tiny rarity dedicated to Werner Buttner limited to one thousand unnumbered copies.
