"Six (Sixth Sense)" was innovative Japanese designer Rei Kawakubo's groundbreaking in-house magazine produced to promote her line Comme des Garcons. Published semi-annually between 1988 and 1991 to coincide with CDG's Spring and Fall collections, it ran for a mere eight issues, and was distributed hors commerce only to a select number of clients, fashion insiders and the label's boutiques - it was never made commercially available for sale. "Six" was notable for its striking design and production values that mixed Comme Des Garcons' seasonal looks with pictorials on the work of significant yet often overlooked photographers, artists and designers. Such features over the run included an issue devoted nearly entirely to Robert Frank as well as Andre Kertesz, Gisele Freund, Sachiko Kuru, Serge Lido, Tony Mendoza, Jean Cocteau, Eileen Grey, Yohji Yamamoto, Karl Blossfeldt, Andreas Feininger, Martin Munkacsi, Andre Vigneau, Ken Heyman, Gilbert & George, Gilbert Woon, Cecil Beaton, Elliot Erwitt, Ralph Steiner, Azzedine Alaia, The Boyle Family, David Fischli and Peter Weiss, Mike and Doug Starn, Issey Miyake, Lucie Rie, Line Vautrin, Salvador Dali, Niko Pirosmani, Dino Buzzati, Madame Yevonde, Edward Weston, Jeanette Montgomery Barron, and Alessandro Mendini. Photographers that contributed fashion editorial are Peter Lindbergh, Timothy Greenfield Sanders, Arthur Elgort, Pierre Boucher, Max Vadukul, F.C. Gundlach, Steven Meisel, Brian Griffin, Juergen Teller, Javier Vallhonrat, David Seidner, Christian Moser, Kishin Shinoyama and Dennis Hopper. Those pictured wearing CDG include Robert Ryman, Ellsworth Kelly, Philip Taaffe, Edward Albee, John Malkovich, Linda Evangelista, Francesco Clemente, Naomi Campbell, Julian Sands, John Lurie, Enzo Cucchi, John Cale, Kristin McMenamy, Harry Dean Stanton, Dennis Hopper, Deborah Harry, Sandra Bernhard, and Anna Pawlowski. A presentable, complete set of all eight issues of this uncommon and significant publication showing overall wear, handling, and soiling. There is some tearing and/or minor paper loss to the covers of issues One, Four, and Five. Issues Three, Five, and Six show some minor rippling to several pages - but with no sticking or tearing - due to contact with moisture. Still in all, this is a nice set of this awesome publication that looks better in hand than it describes that has been priced accordingly.
