TAKESHI SHIOTA: FUKAKI FUCHI YORI (FROM THE DEEP SLOW CURRENT) - MINAMATA 68-72
(SHIOTA, TAKESHI). Shiota, Takeshi. Tokyo: Nishi Nippon Shimbun-sha, 1973. First Edition. 8vo. Pictorial Self Wrappers. Photography Monograph. Good +.. 168pp, profusely illustrated in b&w. Text in Japanese. In a protective clear acetate dustwrapper. Published in 1973, Takeshi Shiota's "Fukaki Fuchi Yori" traces the devastating effects of the decades-long Mercury poisoning of Minamata Bay perpetuated by the Chisso Corporation's electrochemical plant in Kyushu. The book is the moving Japanese photojournalistic counterpoint to "Minamata: Words and Photographs" - W. Eugene Smith and Aileen Smith's documentation of the same environmental tragedy published two years later. A most presentable example of this exceedingly uncommon item in the publisher's printed obi showing some overall wear, rubbing, and handling along with some mottling and occasional delamination to its black wrappers as well as a slight soft crease through a portion of the textblock at the upper foredge corner.
