One hundred and thirty-seven 4 x 6" file cards printed b&w offset recto only, profusely illustrated. With a bibliography and filmography. This is the uniquely designed catalogue published in conjunction with the second of Lucy R. Lippard's landmark exhibitions of Conceptual, Minimal, and process works from the crème de la crème of the international contemporary art world. Exhibited between January 13th and February 8th, 1970 at the Vancouver Art Gallery, "955,000" takes its title from the city's estimated population the previous year. Its participants were Vito Acconci, Carl Andre, Keith Arnatt, Richard Artschwager, Art & Language (Terry Atkinson, David Bainbridge, Michael Baldwin, Harold Hurrell), John Baldessari, Robert Barry, Frederick Barthelme, Gene Beery, Mel Bochner, Bill Bollinger, Jonathan Borofsky, Daniel Buren, Donald Burgy, Rosemary Castoro, Greg Curnoe, Hanne Darboven, Walter de Maria, Jan Dibbets, Christos Dikeakos, Rafael Ferrer, Dan Graham, Hans Haacke, Alex Hay, Michael Heizer, Eva Hesse, Douglas Huebler, Robert Huot, Stephen Kaltenbach, On Kawara, Edward Kienholz, Robert Kinmont, Joseph Kosuth, Christine Kozlov, John Latham, Barry Le Va, Sol LeWitt, Roelof Louw, Duane Lunden, Bruce McLean, Robert Morris, N.E. A most handsome set of one hundred and thirty-seven loose cards (ninety-five executed for the 1969 Seattle "557,087" exhibition plus forty-two issued for Vancouver) that comprise this uncommon, important conceptual document showing a bit of mild age-toning or handling to a few. A forty-third 955,000 card - the Jonathan Borofsky contribution entitled "Illustration #1E - regarding the meaning of time." - was not submitted in time to be printed for the Vancouver Art Gallery opening, and rarely if ever appears in sets that were sold at the exhibition. A photocopied example of this additional work has been laid in.
