One of the great Pop Art publications of the sixties, "Index Book" is a visual tour-de-force of the glamorously seedy den that was Andy Warhol's Factory before Valerie Solanis changed things forever on June 3rd, 1968. Designed as a children's book for hipsters, bound between Billy Name, Nat Finkelstein and a young Stephen Shore's snaps of Edie, Nico, the Velvets, Ultra Violet, et al. are a 1) pop-up Castle, 2) accordion-pleated squeeze toy, 3) pop-up Bi-plane, 4) spring-mounted "Chelsea Girls" promotional disc, 5) photographically illustrated dodecahedron, 6) previously unreleased Velvet Underground flexi-disc, 7) "nose job" overlay, 8) pop-up Hunt's Tomato Paste can, 9) "For a Big Surprise" faux Acid blotters, and 9) silver balloon. An exceptionally bright, securely-bound example of this iconic gem (cited on pages 144-145 of Martin Parr and Gerry Badger's "The Photobook: A History Volume II", pages 188-189 of "The Book of 101 Books", page 250 of Ursula Block and Michael Glasmeier's "Broken Music: Artists' Recordworks", and page 199 of Giorgio Maffei's "Records by Artists 1958-1990") with all internal components present and attached as issued whose accordion no longer squeaks and whose silver balloon has disintegrated - staining the adjacent pages, as usual - showing a slight dent to the lower foredge corner of the textblock.
