THE LOS ANGELES FREE MUSIC SOCIETY (L.A.F.M.S) RECORD CATALOG NO. 1 - 1977 - WITH A HAND-PAINTED COVER
(LAFMS: LOS ANGELES FREE MUSIC SOCIETY). Recchion, Tom, Chip Chapman and Tim Chapman. Pasadena, CA: Los Angeles Free Music Society, 1977. First Edition. 8vo. Stapled Illustrated Wrappers. Record Label Trade Catalogue. Near Fine.. np (28pp) + loose inserts, illustrated in b&w. Designed by Tom Recchion. In a protective clear acetate dustwrapper. Self-published in 1977, this is the very first trade catalogue of available recordings by the Pasadena-based Los Angeles Free Music Society - aka LAFMS. Printed in small quantity in rather sketchy xerography, it features Dada and Surrealist-inspired artwork accompanied by descriptions of the label's first seven releases: the Le Forte Four, "I.D. Art" Anthology, "Live at the Brand" by L-44 + DooDooettes, "Blorp Esette Vol. I", "Magic Beans", "Godzilla's Mystery Abortion" by Seldom Melodic Ensemble, and Joe Potts' "Airway", plus additional information including a list of forthcoming projects and a LAFMS contact address list. The cover is a cardstock sheet of old master portraits that has been stamped LAFMS in red ink and hand-painted with abstract swirls of red tempera pigment. A most handsome example of this exceedingly uncommon ephemeral item - only an estimated twenty-five were ever produced - with some additional period ephemera including an invitation to the legendary July 8th, 1976 Brand Library concert laid in showing some trivial internal staining and transfer from the painting process. This was obtained in 1977 directly from LAFMS art director, DooDooette, and Human Hands member Tom Recchion who circled his contact information in ink at the rear. Inventory Number: 022498
