Rose, Aaron & Christian Strike, Editors. With Essays by Alex Baker,Thom Collins, Jeffrey Deitch, Rene deGuzman, Carlo McCormick & Jocko Weyland. BEAUTIFUL LOSERS: CONTEMPORARY ART AND STREET CULTURE. New York: Iconoclast Productions in Association with D.A.P. (Distributed Art Publishers), 2004. Second Printing. 4to. Cloth in Dust Jacket. Exhibition Catalog. As New/As New. 272pp, profusely illustrated in color and b&w. Designed by Stephen Kinder Design Partnership. With a biography for each artist. "The greatest cultural accomplishments in history have never been the result of the brainstorms of marketing men, corporate focus groups, or any homogenized methods; they have always happened organically. More often than not, these manifestations have been the result of a few like-minded people coming together to create something new and original for no other purpose than a common love of doing it. In the 1990s, a loose-knit group of American artists and creators, many just out of their teens, began their careers in just such a way. Influenced by the popular underground youth subcultures of the day, such as skateboarding, graffiti, street fashion, and independent music, artists began to create art that reflected the lifestyles they led. Many had no formal training and almost no conception of the inner workings of the art world. They learned their crafts through practice, trial and error, and good old-fashioned innovation. Not since the Beat Generation have we seen a group of creative individuals with such a unified aesthetic sense and varied cultural facets. The world of art has been greatly affected by their accomplishments as have the worlds of fashion, music, literature, film, and, ironically, athletics. Over the years, the group has matured, and many have become more Establishment-oriented; but no matter, their independent spirit has remained steadfast. Beautiful Losers is a retrospective celebration of this spirit, with hundreds of artworks by over two dozen artists." This extraordinary catalogue was published in conjunction with the 2004 touring exhibition "Beautiful Losers", and is a colorful compendium of popular culture related artwork, graphics, and photos. The contributing artists are divided into two historical categories - the "Roots and Influences" who are Jean-Michel Basquiat, Neil Blender, Larry Clark, R. Crumb, Glen E. Friedman, Futura, Keith Haring, Wes Humpston, Ari Marcopoulos, Raymond Pettibon, Brian Schroeder (Pushead), Craig R. Stecyk III, and Andy Warhol; and the "Beautiful Losers", consisting of Thomas Campbell, Cynthia Connolly, Brian Donnelly (KAWS), Cheryl Dunn, Shepard Fairey, Phil Frost, Mark Gonzales, Evan Hecox, Jo Jackson, Todd James, James Jarvis, Andy Jenkins, Chris Johanson, Spike Jonze, Margaret Kilgallen, Harmony Korine, Geoff McFetridge, Barry "Twist "McGee, Ryan McGinley, Ryan McGinniss, Mike Mills, Stephen Powers (ESPO), Terry Richardson, Clare E. Rojas, Romon Kimin Yang (Rostarr), Ed Templeton, and Tobin Yelland. Each of the "...Losers" has created an original one or two page full color spread to this fabulous document. Levin, Thomas Y., Ursula Frohne & Peter Weibel, Editors. CTRL [SPACE]: RHETORICS OF SURVEILLANCE FROM BENTHAM TO BIG BROTHER. Karlsruhe, GERMANY & Cambridge, MA: ZKM Center for Art and Media & MIT Press, 1986. First Edition. 4to. Pictorial Boards. Very Good/No Jacket - As Issued. 665pp, 350 color and 600 b&w illustrations. Published in conjunction with a 2002 exhibition at the ZKM (Zentrum fⁿr Kunst und Medientechnologie / Center for Art and Media) in Karlsruhe, "this book investigates the state of panoptic art at a time when issues of security and civil liberties are on many people's minds. Traditional imaging and tracking systems have given way to infinitely more powerful data surveillance technologies, as an evolving arsenal of surrogate eyes and ears in our society shifts its focus from military to domestic space. Taking as its point of departure an architectural drawing by Jeremy Bentham that became the model for an entire social regime, CTRL [SPACE] looks at the shifting relationships between design and power, imaging and oppression, from the eighteenth to the twenty-first centuries. From the photographs taken with hidden cameras by Walker Evans and Paul Strand in the early twentieth century to the appropriation of military satellite technology by Marko Peljhan a hundred years later, the works of a wide range of artists have explored the dynamics of watching and being watched. The artists whose panoptical preoccupations are featured are Vito Acconci, Merry Alpern, Lutz Bacher, Lewis Baltz, Denis Beaubois, Jeremy Bentham, Niels Bonde, Bureau of Inverse Technology, Paul Bush, Sophie Calle, Jordan Crandall, Peter Cornwell, Jonas Dahlberg, David Deutsch, Bart Dijkman, Diller + Scofidio, Harun Farocki, Dan Graham, Graft, G.R.A.M., Jeff Guess, Harco Haagsma, Jon Haddock, Institute for Applied Autonomy, Jurgen Klauke, Michael Klier, Komen & Karen Murphy, Rem Koolhaas/OMA, Korpys/Löffler, Laura Kurgan, Langlands & Bell, Ange Leccia, Chip Lord, Jenny Marketou, Jⁿrgen Mayer H.,Michaela Melißn, Dan Mihaltianu, Heiner Mⁿhlenbrock, Pat Naldi & Wendy Kirkup, John Lennon & Yoko Ono, Bruce Nauman, Chris Petit, Walid Ra'ad, Daniel Roth, Thomas Ruff, Julia Scher, Cornelia Schleime, Ann-Sofi Sidén, Lewis Stein, Stih & Schnock, Surveillance Camera Players, Frank Thiel, Zoran Todorovic, visomat inc., Jamie Wagg, Andy Warhol, Peter Weibel, and NYC Surveillance. This book, along with the exhibition it accompanies, is the first state-of-the-art survey of panopticism--in digital culture, architecture, television, video, cinema, painting, photography, conceptual art, installation work, robotics, and satellite imaging". (DORA, MIKI "MICKEY"). Kampion, Drew & Craig Stecyk III. Foreword By Steve Pezman. Tom Adler, Editor. DORA LIVES: THE AUTHORIZED STORY OF MIKI DORA. Santa Barbara, CA: T. Adler Books, 2005. First Edition. Small Oblong 4to. 1/4 Cloth Over Boards. Photography Monograph. As New/No Jacket - As Issued. 137pp, profusely illustrated in color and b&w. Designed by Tom Adler. With the 2002 passing of Miki "Da Cat" Dora, the surfing world lost one of its most talented, charismatic, and controversial innovators. A legend of Malibu lore since the late '50s, Dora helped to create and simultaneously revile the "Gidget"/"Beach Party" California surfing explosion of the '60s, then turned his back to the 'Bu and the world of competitive wave riding to travel the world, often just a step or two ahead of law. Initiated by Miki Dora himself, this loving tribute to the legendary enigma by noted designer/art director/publisher/surfing aficionado Tom Adler is very much in the same vein as Adler's previous deluxe editions on Don James and Tom Blake. It reproduces vintage images and screen captures of Dora by Joe Quigg, Leroy Grannis, Grant Rohloff, Don James, Pat Darrin, Peter Gowland and many others along with biographical texts by Drew Kampion, Craig Stecyk III & Steve Pezman; transcribed interviews, ramblings, and reprinted writings from "Surfer" magazine (including the full "Million Days to Darkness" from 1989!) in an elegantly produced package that was authorized by Miki's family and estate. A pristine copy still in the publisher's shrinkwrap. 1-890481-17-3 Inventory Number: 014863

Buy this book -- it's not very expensive...It's funny, and if you don't like it, you can give it to someone else for Christmas". A pristine copy. 0-8118-0270-1 Inventory Number: 006447

(OMNIVORE). Weschler, Lawrence, Editor in Chief. OMNIVORE: A JOURNAL OF WRITING AND VISUAL CULTURE - PROTOTYPE ISSUE AUTUMN 2003. New York: The New York Institute for the Humanities at New York University, 2003. First Edition. 8vo. Pictorial Wrappers. Journal. Fine. 176pp, profusely illustrated in color and b&w. Designed by Winterhouse Studio (William Drenttel, Jessica Helfand and Kevin Smith). This is a copy of the prototype/prospectus issue of "Omnivore", a proposed semi-annual journal on writing and the arts edited by esteemed "The New Yorker" and "McSweeney's" contributor Lawrence Weschler. Published by The New York Institute for the Humanities at New York University, it was produced to give an idea of what sort of editorial content the first few issues would entail (this has no advertising whatsoever) in order to help secure financial contributions that would facilitate its actual publication. Sadly, as of summer 2005 that has not happened, and this remains the only issue of Omnivore to date. Both its design & printing are impeccable, and the spectacular list of contributors here includes Michael Benson, Breyten Breytenbach, Peter Buchanan-Smith, Rachel Cohen, Diane Cook & Len Jenshel, Kris Cox, Tara Donovan, Tom Eisner, William Finnegan, Ian Frazier, Kathy Grove, David Hockney, Anne Hollander, Siri Hustvedt, Ricky Jay, Jamaica Kincaid, Ryszard Kapuscinski, Curzio Malaparte, Joel Meyerowitz, Errol Morris, Walter Murch, Todd Newberry, Carlos Nine, Noelle Oxenhandler, Rosamond Purcell, Alastair Reid, Oliver Sacks, Mark Salzman, Victor Schrager, Rebecca Solnit, Gregory Whitehead, Lawrence Weschler himself and many others. Hines, Babbette. Preface by Lawrence Weschler. PHOTOBOOTH. New York: Princeton Architectural Press, 2002. Second Printing. 8vo. Cloth in Dust Jacket. Fine/Fine. np (224pp), profusely illustrated in color and b&w. Designed by Deb Wood. "In 1925 the Siberian immigrant Anatol Josepho had an idea for a small curtain-enclosed booth where people could take affordable portraits anonymously and automatically. The photobooth was born. Within twenty years there were more than 30,000 in the United States alone, an explosive growth due largely to World War II. But by the 1960s the advent of Polaroid photography spelled the doom of the "four strip" that had become a fixture at arcades and drugstores everywhere. "Photobooth" presents over seven hundred such photographs from the last seventy-five years, images at turns spontaneous and uninhibited, often goofy, and occasionally touching. Hines, Babbette. Preface by Lawrence Weschler. PHOTOBOOTH - SIGNED BY BABBETTE HINES. Signed and Dated by the Author. New York: Princeton Architectural Press, 2002. First Edition. It is a fascinating portrait of everyday people and a testament to the ongoing fascination with both the process and the result". This is a comprehensive, supremely charming survey of images from this vernacular photographic art form drawn from the collection of the esteemed Babbette Hines. A pristine copy of the now unavailable first printing of one of our all-time favorite books BOLDLY SIGNED AND DATED by author Babbette Hines on the half title page. 1-56898-381-6 Inventory Number: 014998

(BRODOVITCH, ALEXEY). Rosenthal, George S. & Frank Zachary, Editors. Alexey Brodovitch, Art Editor. PORTFOLIO: THE ANNUAL OF THE GRAPHIC ARTS (NO. 3). Cincinnati, OH & New York: The Zebra Press & Duell, Sloan and Pearce, Inc., 1951. First Edition. Large 4to. Wrappers in Illustrated Jacket. Periodical. Very Good -./Fair.. np, profusely illustrated in color and b&w. In a protective clear acetate dustwrapper. This, the third and final issue of Alexey Brodovitch's tour de force fifties art and graphic design anthology includes articles by or about Ben Shahn, Henri Cartier-Bresson in the Orient - Thirteen Photographs, French Marble Paper (with a hand marbled example tipped-in), Calligraphy (also with tipped-in examples), Stereoscopy, Jackson Pollock photographed by Hans Namuth, Hobo Signs (with photographs by Ben Rose and Peter Basch, etc.), Alexander Calder, Albert Skira's Books, "Astronomical City " (photographed by Isamu Noguchi), and Robert Osborn. A most presentable example of this fragile item with the publisher's original stereoscopic glasses laid in, as issued showing typical browning, abrading, and slight tearing to the jacket at the extremities. Sadly, the publisher's combination of cheap binding glue and acidic cardboard has caused the vibrant dustwrapper to disintegrate at the spine of virtually all extant copies. That is the case here, with paper loss to the jacket along the entire length of the spine. The textblock has a slight dent through the lower foredge corner, but is otherwise tight and bright, with the binding complete and secure. It has been priced accordingly.
