Heppner, F. Nigel. PHARAOH'S FLOWERS: THE BOTANICAL TREASURES OF TUTANKHAMUN. London: Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew & HMSO, 1990. First Edition. 8vo. Illustrated Wrappers. Exhibition Catalog. Fine. 80pp, profusely illustrated in color and b&w. "The golden face of Tutankhamun was garlanded with fresh flowers, exquisitely preserved in his innermost coffin after three thousand years. In the tomb were one hundred and sixteen baskets, most containing offerings of seeds and food, left there for use in the afterlife. Wine jars and beautiful alabaster perfume vases contained products fit for a king; thrones and stools were made of ebony and cedar of Lebanon, while model ships were equipped with linen sails. A delightful model of a granary was found full to the brim with seeds - emmer wheat, fenugreek and chick-pea - and brooms of reed and grass used to tidy up after the burial remain intact. All these botanical treasures can help us to unravel the civilization of Ancient Egypt. The author describes the items found in Tutankhamun's tomb - such as willow, papyrus, mandrake, water lilies, oils and resins, and many more - as well as their use in botanical designs. Fully illustrated, each chapter carries detailed descriptions of the plant species found or represented in the tomb, including aspects of their history and cultivation". (SAGMEISTER, STEFAN). Lewis, Judith & David Ulin, Editors. Preface by Antonio Villaraigosa. Introduction by Mariana Amatullo. Foreword by Richard Koshalek. THE L.A. EARTHQUAKE SOURCEBOOK. Pasadena, CA: Designmatters at Art Center College of Design, 2009. First Edition. 8vo. Decorative Boards. Graphic Design Monograph. As New/No Jacket - As Issued. 388pp, profusely illustrated in color and b&w. This is the coolest earthquake-preparedness book ever published. Predicated on the assumption that the Big One is all but imminent, "The L.A. Earthquake Sourcebook" combines practical advice with compelling graphics. For instance, an essay advising the reader what to include in a personal disaster supplies kit is illustrated with a comic that gives voice to a more jaundiced view of disaster preparedness, in which a character anticipates, "Three days after the quake, panic sets in. Marauders who didn't prepare will go foraging for food. There'll be gangs... There'll be looting...". The result is a highly useful and readable compendium of the latest knowledge and scientific data about earthquake preparedness and recovery by educational institutions, civic agencies and individual experts in a wide variety of fields that manages to also be timely, realistic and even entertaining. This striking volume was designed by award-winning New York-based graphic designer Stefan Sagmeister and includes illustrations by designers and artists including Paul McCreery, Vincent Hui and Katherine Siy, excerpts from renowned authors such as Joan Didion, Lawrence Weschler and John McPhee, and an introductory essay by former FEMA Director James Lee Witt". A pristine copy of this ultra-cool Sagmeister-designed book cum object with pendulum bookmark still in the publisher's shrinkwrap. 0-9618705-0-8 Inventory Number: 018501
