(DUMAS, CHARLOTTE). Dumas, Charlotte. CHARLOTTE DUMAS: RETRIEVED - FIRST EDITION SIGNED BY THE PHOTOGRAPHER. Signed by the Photographer. Los Angeles: The Ice Plant, 2011. First Edition. 4to. Pictorial Self-Wrappers. Photography Monograph. As New. np (48pp), 20 color and 1 b&w illustration. Designed by Tessa van der Waals. "Since 2002, Charlotte Dumas has worked exclusively on photographic projects exploring the ways in which we use, define and relate to animals. Immediately following the attacks of 9/11, nearly one hundred trained search dogs and their handlers were deployed by FEMA to assist in the rescue efforts at the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. Enlisted from a network of twenty-six task forces in eighteen states, the dogs worked around the clock alongside firemen and other teams sorting through the debris to locate survivors in the rubble. One decade later, Dutch photographer Charlotte Dumas succeeded in tracking down fifteen of the surviving dogs that took part in these rescue operations, visiting and photographing them at their homes throughout the US, where they all still lived with their handlers. Composed at close range in natural light, Dumas' powerful portraits - reproduced here in a thoughtfully designed paperback volume with Japanese binding - offer an intimate view into the everyday lives of these highly specialized working animals, now sharing the vulnerability of old age as they once pursued a common heroic goal". A pristine copy of the first edition of this moving book limited to two thousand copies only that sold out immediately upon publication SIGNED by Charlotte Dumas in black ink on the half title page. 0-9823653-6-5 Inventory Number: 020803

(TEMPLETON, ED). Templeton, Ed, Arty Nelson, Jean-Francois Chevrier, Carlo McCormick & Philippe Van Cauteren. With an Interview by Thomas Caron. ED TEMPLETON: THE CEMETERY OF REASON - SIGNED BY THE PHOTOGRAPHER. Signed by the Photographer. Ghent, BELGIUM: Stedelijk Museum Voor Aktuele Kunst (S.M.A.K.), 2010. First Edition. 4to. Pictorial Wrappers. Photography Monograph. Fine. 160pp, profusely illustrated in color and b&w. Text in English. Designed by Ward Heirwegh and Inge Ketelers. "Californian artist Ed Templeton delivers up his diagnosis of the contemporary human condition in a whirlwind of present-tense imagery filtered through photographs, paintings and drawings. Over the past decade and a half, Templeton has built an oeuvre that closely tracks his day-to-day reality, recording life in the Southern Californian suburbs, his flawed family background, his life as a professional skateboarder, his milieu, the relationship between the artist and his muse (his wife Deanna) and much else. What begins as a very personal chronicle ultimately opens out onto grander horizons - in Templeton's case, a broad meditation on the chaos and the joy of being human. Presented as a mid-career retrospective accompanying a spring 2010 exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst in Ghent, Belgium, "The Cemetery of Reason" is the first large monographic museum publication devoted to Templeton's work. It combines and juxtaposes works in various media from the past fifteen years with new works and series, all reproduced in two hundred and sixty color images, thus providing the most comprehensive overview of Templeton's work available". (PRINCE, RICHARD). Prince, Richard & Bruce Hainley. Foreword by Bernard Mendes Burgi, Beatrix Ruf & Gijs Van Tuyl. RICHARD PRINCE: PAINTINGS / PHOTOGRAPHS. Basel, SWITZERLAND & Ostfildern-Ruit, GERMANY: Museum fur Gegenwartskunst Basel & Hatje Cantz Publishers, 2002. First Edition. 4to. Printed Boards in Slipcase. Artist Monograph. Fine/No Jackets - As Issued. 180 + 192 + 30pp, profusely illustrated in color. Designed by Richard Prince + Kuhle and Mozer. Text in English and German. With an exhibition checklist, bibliography and exhibition history. "Silk Cut smokes, high-end pens and watches, jewelry dangling into cleavage, the Marlboro Man, the very young Brooke Shields in that movie still, bare-chested blondes on bikes - this is the stuff of Richard Prince's photographs. Sexist jokes, Playboy magazine cartoons, and graffitied doodles are the stuff of his paintings. Or rather, all of these icons of mass culture are the materials that Prince recycles and processes in order to make his own artworks. Re-photographed, fragmented, layered, and copied down, their original format irreversibly if subtly altered, they are transformed into works of high art. By appropriating a reality artificially staged by the media, Prince assesses and catalogues everyday life in America through the cool gaze of an archivist. Conceived of and designed by the artist himself, this large-format, two volume publication is the most ambitious presentation of Prince's work to date. One book is devoted to paintings, the other to photographs, and an accompanying booklet offers a radical essay by Bruce Hainley". "Richard Prince: Paintings / Photographs" is the comprehensive two volume hardbound catalogue accompanied by a text booklet published in conjunction with a massive 2002 touring European Museum exhibition. (PRINCE, RICHARD). Frey, James. RICHARD PRINCE: CANAL ZONE. New York: Gagosian Gallery, 2008. First Edition. Oblong 4to. Illustrated Boards. Artist Monograph. Fine/No Jacket - As Issued. 91pp, profusely illustrated in color. Designed by Graphic Thought Process. Published in conjunction with a 2008 Gagosian Gallery New York exhibition, this elegant hardbound catalogue featuring a textual contribution by James Frey reproduced the first showing of Richard Prince's "Canal Zone" body of work. "Following his burlesque dialogues with the art of De Kooning, Picasso, and Naughty Nurse pulp fiction, Prince has turned to his own biographical roots for inspiration. The Panama Canal Zone, where he was born, was, until 1979, a political exclave of the U.S., part-colonial company enclave and part-socialist government, purportedly dominated by virulent separatist racism. In his characteristic manner, Prince has transformed the former reality of his birthplace into a fictive space: providing an anarchic tropical scenario in which extreme emanations of the (white American male) id, fleshy female pin-ups, Rastafarians with massive dreadlocks, electric guitars, and virile black bodies run riot". Cloth in Pictorial Dust Jacket. Photography Monograph. As New/As New. np (64pp), 48 color illustrations. Designed by Alec Soth, Gerhard Steidl and Jonas Wettre. "After completing the work for his first book, Sleeping by the Mississippi, in 2002, Alec Soth traveled with his wife to Bogota, Colombia, to adopt a baby girl. The baby's birth mother had given the new parents a book filled with letters, pictures and poems for their daughter. "I hope that the hardness of the world will not hurt your sensitivity," she wrote. "When I think about you I hope that your life is full of beautiful things." While the courts processed the adoption paperwork, and with these words as a mission statement, Soth set about making his own book for his daughter. Soth writes, "In photographing the city of her birth, I hope I've described some of the beauty in this hard place." This beauty makes itself apparent through ramshackle architecture, the companionship of animals and the perseverance of the human spirit. But Soth's photographs also transcend the simple description of beauty, roaming through a cast of strays, tough souls and small hints of hope. A pristine copy of the first Steidl printing (cited on page 42 of "From Fair to Fine 3") BOLDLY SIGNED AND DATED by Alec Soth in the year of publication in black ink on the title page. 3-86521-415-7 Inventory Number: 020762

(SIMON, TARYN). Simon, Taryn, Elisabeth Sussman, Tina Kukielski & Richard Dworkin. Foreword by Salman Rushdie. AN AMERICAN INDEX OF THE HIDDEN AND UNFAMILIAR - SIGNED BY TARYN SIMON. Signed by the Photographer. Gottingen, GERMANY: Steidl, 2007. First Edition. 4to. Gilt Debossed Cloth. Photography Monograph. Fine/No Jacket - As Issued. 152pp, 61 color illustrations. Designed by Joseph Logan and Taryn Simon. In "An American Index of the Hidden and Unfamiliar", Taryn Simon documents spaces that are integral to America's foundation, mythology and daily functioning, but remain inaccessible or unknown to a public audience. She has photographed rarely seen sites from domains including: science, government, medicine, entertainment, nature, security and religion. This index examines subjects that, while provocative or controversial, are currently legal. The work responds to a desire to discover unknown territories, to see everything. Simon makes use of the annotated-photograph's capacity to engage and inform the public. Transforming that which is off-limits or under-the-radar into a visible and intelligible form, she confronts the divide between the privileged access of the few and the limited access of the public. Photographed with a large format view camera (except when prohibited), Simon's color images form a seductive collection that reflects and reveals a national identity". Oblong 4to. Cloth in Pictorial Dust Jacket. Photography Monograph. Near Fine/Fine. 278pp, profusely illustrated in color and b&w. Text in English, German and French. "This collection, drawn from Grannis' personal archives, showcases an impressive selection of surf photographs-from the bliss of catching the perfect wave at San Onofre to dramatic wipeouts at Oahu's famed North Shore. An innovator in the field, Grannis suction-cupped a waterproof box to his board, enabling him to change film in the water and stay closer to the action than other photographers of the time. Equally notable is his work covering an emerging surf lifestyle, from surfer stomps and hoards of fans at surf contests to board-laden woody station wagons along the Pacific Coast Highway. It is in these iconic images that a sport still in its adolescence embodied the free-spirited nature of an era-a time before shortboards and celebrity endorsements, when surfing was at its bronzed best". One of the greatest surfing photography produced to date, this lovingly reveals the kinder and gentler California surf scene of over a quarter century ago in hundreds of vintage images taken by one of the pioneers of the field. "Tim Noble and Sue Webster have created a remarkable group of anti-monuments in their eleven-year career, mixing the strategies of modern sculpture and the attitude of punk to make art from anti-art. What they share is that they are all told with the wide eyed wonder which Banksy inspires. Compiled between 2009 and 2011, some of these stories are quite old and have been told so many times they have become the stuff of legend, while others are more questionable and can best be described as myths. Near Fine/No Jacket - As Issued. 112pp, 55 color illustrations. Designed by Dan Miller Design. With an exhibition checklist, biography and exhibition history. "When I started making paintings, the word on painting was "PAINTING IS DEAD." I saw this as an interesting place for painting... death can be refreshing, so I started engaging in necrophilia... Approaching history in the same way that Dr. Frankenstein approaches body parts...Nature Morte... my contemporaries were NO WAVERS... BLACK FLAG-ERS... and this death painting thing led to a sex and death painting thing... that became an existence thing... that became a "Cease to Exist" thing... A kind of post-punk existentialism. I am still concerned with "art about art", but I am also aware that "art about art" still reflects the time in which it was made. Content is not denied... Content is not obvious... Content is sustained in the air or the vibe of the work". As New. np (48pp), 20 color and 1 b&w illustration. (POLLOCK, JACKSON). Cernuschi, Claude. Foreword by Michael P. Mezzatesta. JACKSON POLLOCK: PSYCHOANALYTIC DRAWINGS. Durham, NC: Duke University Press & Duke Museum of Art, 1992. First Edition. 4to. Cloth in Illustrated Jacket. Artist Monograph. Fine/Fine. 146pp, 83 color and 13 duotone illustrations. With an exhibition checklist. This is the elegant catalogue issued in conjunction with a posthumous 1992 travelling exhibition of works on paper - the so-called "Psychoanalytic Drawings" - by Jackson Pollock circulated by the Duke Museum of Art. "Perhaps no aspect of Jackson Pollock's oeuvre has been more misunderstood than the drawings he created during Jungian psychoanalysis sessions from 1939-40. Presented to his psychotherapist Dr. Joseph Henderson, where they remained in private files for almost three decades until their publication in 1970, these drawings have been shrouded in both personal and art-historical controversy - from a lawsuit filed by Pollock's widow, Lee Krasner, to wide-ranging justifications of them as Jungian iconography or as "proof" of Pollock's supposed mental disorder. This book draws together eighty-two drawings and one gouache, beautifully reproduced in accurate color for the first time. The images reveal a range of styles, from highly refined and elaborate sketches to rapid and automatic improvisations, as well as a range of subjects, from human figures, animals, and cryptic figures to purely abstract forms. Together, they bear witness to Pollock's intense interest in the latest contemporary art as well as non-Western traditions. Art historian Claude Cernuschi's essay addresses key historical and interpretive questions surrounding these drawings: what was their intended purpose?; do they have particular psychoanalytic importance? what is the relationship between psychoanalysis and art? Ultimately, Cernuschi argues for the importance of reintegrating these works into their rightly held place in Pollock's oeuvre. Remarkable for their beauty as well as spontaneity, these drawings reflect the conscious intellectual choice of an artist blazing new trails" A most handsome copy of the exceedingly uncommon hardbound edition. (DAVIDSON, BRUCE). Davidson, Bruce, Henry Geldzahler, Fred Brathwaite (aka Fab Five Freddy) & Arthur Ollman. SUBWAY: BRUCE DAVIDSON - SIGNED BY THE PHOTOGRAPHER. Signed by the Photographer. West Hollywood, CA: St. Ann's Press, 2003. Second, Revised Edition (First Thus). Oblong 4to. Cloth in Dust Jacket. Photography Monograph. Fine/Fine. 125pp, 96 color illustrations. Designed by Paul McMenamin at SPINE. "From 1980 to 1985, Bruce Davidson explored and shot six hundred miles of New York subway tracks. In his own words, "I wanted to transform this subway from its dark, degrading, and impersonal reality into images that open up our experience again to the color, sensuality, and vitality of the individual souls that ride it each day". Originally published in 1986, this dark, democratic environment provided the setting for the photographer's first extensive series in color. Subway riders are set against a gritty, graffiti-strewn background, displayed in tones Davidson described as "an iridescence like that I had seen in photographs of deep-sea fish." Never before has the subway been portrayed in such detail, revealing the interplay of its inner landscape and outer vistas. The images include lovers, commuters, tourists, families, and the homeless. From weary straphangers to languorous ladies in summer dresses to stalking predators, Davidson's compassionate vision illuminates the stubborn survival of humanity. On the eve of the New York subway's 100th anniversary, St. Ann's Press published a beautiful revised edition of Bruce Davidson's 1986 masterpiece (whose first edition is cited on page 34 of "From Fair to Fine 2") newly supplemented by forty previously unpublished images, a new introduction by Arthur Ollman, and a foreword by graffiti artist Fred Braithwaite (aka Fab Five Freddy)". A pristine copy of the quickly exhausted 2003 St. Ann's Press printing SIGNED by Bruce Davidson in black ink on the title page. 0-9713681-8-X Inventory Number: 020606

This was followed by the portfolio "Mixed Media Montages" published in late 1978. (TEMPLETON, ED). Templeton, Ed, Aaron Rose & Arty Nelson. ED TEMPLETON: TEENAGE KISSERS - SIGNED BY THE PHOTOGRAPHER WITH A SIGNED POSTER . Signed by the Photographer. New York: Seems, 2011. First Edition 1/1000. 8vo. Stapled Pictorial Wrappers. Photography Monograph. As New. 80pp + one 22 1/2 x 22 1/2" newsprint poster printed b&w recto only folded neatly in sixteenths, as issued, profusely illustrated in color and b&w. "Teenage Kissers should be viewed as a historical volume. As we look at these photographs of young people exchanging awkward kisses we are reminded again of that wonderful uncomfortability that comes with the discovery of young sexuality. Not only do we all remember the feeling of that first clumsy teenage kiss, as mature viewers we can now look at the photos from afar and understand exactly where it's all going. Like its predecessor "Teenage Smokers", this is a perfect documentation of this feeling. The photographs are, in many ways, beyond innocence. They brim with humanity in its most raw form and remind us that although some of us have now grown up, we're still never so far from that first kiss. The basics of our sexual lives are reflected back to us in these images and no matter how many times we see it, it cannot be denied that there's a little "Teenage Kisser" in every one of us". A pristine copy of the quickly sold out 2011 sequel to Ed's acclaimed "Teenage Smokers" BOLDLY SIGNED by the photographer in black ink on the title page with the publisher's SIGNED poster of Ed's image of Deanna Templeton laid in still in the publisher's plastic pouch. 0-9825936-7-8 Inventory Number: 020580

(VAN HAMERSVELD, JOHN). Van Hamersveld, John. Dave Clucas, Editor. JOHN VAN HAMERSVELD: MY ART, MY LIFE - SIGNED WITH A DRAWING. Signed by the Author with a Drawing. South Bend, IN: St. Augustine's Press, 2010. First Edition. 8vo. Illustrated Wrappers. Artist Autobiography. As New. 234pp, illustrated in b&w and color. Artist turned Art Director John Van Hamersveld is responsible for some of the most iconic graphic images to emerge from California in the sixties and seventies. Raised in the surfing community of Palos Verdes, his teenage adventures with Mickey Dora, Dale Velzy, John Severson and childhood pal Rick Griffin led to his becoming the graphic designer for "Surfer" and "Surf Guide" Magazines at the height of the "Gidget" and Beach Party craze. In 1964 he created the timeless Day-Glo one-sheet for Bruce Brown's genre-defining film "The Endless Summer". After a stint at the famed Chouinard Art Institute, Van Hamersveld went on to design the Pinnacle Concerts posters for Jimi Hendrix, Cream, The Velvet Underground, and many others as well as create striking album packaging for The West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band, The Beatles' "Magical Mystery Tour", The Jefferson Airplane's "Crown of Creation, Bob Dylan's "Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid", The Grateful Dead's "Skeletons From the Closet", and most notably The Rolling Stones' classic "Exile on Main Street". "My Art / My Life" confidently recounts Van Hamersfeld's autobiographical experiences alongside many of the most interesting Surfing, Art (lots of Andy Warhol anecdotes!), and Rock 'n' Roll personalities of the period - albeit in a sometimes frustratingly disjointed spelling, grammar and continuity be damned manner - and establishes once and for all his place in the pantheon of graphic design history. A pristine copy of the first softbound trade edition BOLDLY INSCRIBED "Enjoy, John Van Hamersveld" by the author with a drawing of his iconic round glasses in black ink on the front free endpaper. 1-58731-524-6 Inventory Number: 020572

(BOURGEOIS, LOUISE). Bourgeois, Louise. LOUISE BOURGEOIS: ODE A LA BIEVRE. New York: Zucker Art Books, 2007. First Edition 1/1800. Oblong Folio. Linen Over Boards, Slipcased. Artist's Book. As New./No Jacket - As Issued.. 52pp, 25 color illustrations. Designed by Louise Bourgeois. "When Louise Bourgeois was eight years old in 1919, her family moved to the Parisian suburb of Antony where the Bievre River cut across the garden in a straight line. The river was key to their relocation as it was imperative to the family's business of tapestry restoration for the washing of the tapestries. In 2002, Bourgeois would distill her emotions and memories of the river and the garden in an important unique fabric book entitled "Ode a la Bievre". In the book she reminisces through images and text, "with the soil from that river we planted geraniums, masses of peonies, and beds of asparagus and honeysuckle that smelled so sweet in the rain". Using her own garments as raw material to make sewn fabric collages, she evoked feelings and memories through lines, shapes and colors. Years later, the artist was to go back to the house with her own family only to find the river to no longer exist - "only the trees that my father had planted along its edge remained as a witness". Published in 2007, this edition faithfully reproduces all twenty-five pages of that original fabric work in vivid, beautifully printed color on heavy stock, along with a two page text by Louise Bourgeois. It is bound in a debossed linen over boards, and housed in the publisher's blind-stamped, unprinted cardboard slipcase, as issued. (JOSEPH, MARC). Joseph, Marc & James Frey. Interviews by Cory Reynolds. Carol LeFlufy, Editor. AMERICAN PITBULL: PHOTOGRAPHS BY MARC JOSEPH - SIGNED BY THE PHOTOGRAPHER. Signed by the Photographer. Gottingen, GERMANY: Steidl, 2003. First Edition. 4to. Boards with Pastedown. Photography Monograph. Fine/No Jacket - As Issued. 248pp, profusely illustrated in color. Designed by Gerhard Steidl, Marc Joseph and Claas Moller. Text in English. "American Pitbull" is a photographic exploration into the culture of American Pit Bull dogs and their people, presenting an alternative view of the controversial world revolving around a uniquely American breed of dog and the human beings that live for them. Over a three-year period photographer Marc Joseph traveled the United States photographing Pit Bull dogs, their owners, breeders and "old time dog men," at their homes and yards, and during various events related to the breed. The relationships formed with his subjects have helped Joseph to gain full access to a culture known by few outside of their specific community. The fanatical, almost religious devotion that Pit Bull people attribute to their breed is clearly portrayed in Josephs pictures. Issues of identity are addressed through elements of image, race, pride, and background, while the photographs simultaneously serve to further an understanding of our perceptions of unconditional love, beauty, danger, and strength. Themes of family and shelter are prominent; throughout the series a cast of characters emerges, themselves defining the context of the book. From the elder-statesmen of the Pit Bull world in New England and the Southern United States such as Louis B. Colby and Floyd Boudreaux, to new-school giants the Hip-Hop music scene on the East and West coasts, such as Big Boi from Outkast, and DJ Muggs of Cypress Hill, "American Pitbull" clearly goes to the heart of what and why people feel so strongly for these dogs. Writer James Frey ("A Million Little Pieces") contributes an historically informative and personally sensitive essay, that, along with Marc Joseph's photographs, may well change a few minds on this, most misunderstood of all of man's best friends". A stunning tour-de-force, this is without a doubt one of our favorite photo-essays in recent years! The book reproduces nearly every work created by the artist up to 1997, and is a lasting monument to the Saatchi decade. A most handsome copy of the 1997 Booth-Clibborn Editions British first printing with everything present bearing the BOLDLY SIGNED PRESENTATION "Happy Birthday ... Love Damien (bought by ...) XXX! in black ink on the title page showing a bit of sunning to the orange printed lettering at the spine. The book was purchased as a birthday gift by the husband of a fellow artist at the opening of the Royal Academy "Sensation" exhibition of the Saatchi collection which Hirst then inscribed at an after-party held later that evening at Soho's notorious The Groucho Club. Armstrong, Elizabeth, Michael Boyd, Frances Colpitt, Dave Hickey, Thomas Hine, Bruce Jenkins & Elizabeth A.T. Smith. BIRTH OF THE COOL: CALIFORNIA ART, DESIGN, AND CULTURE AT MIDCENTURY. Newport Beach, CA & Munich, GERMANY: Orange County Museum of Art & Prestel, 2007. First Edition. Oblong 4to. Cloth in Illustrated Jacket. Exhibition Catalog. As New/As New. 304pp, 195 color and 93 b&w illustrations. With artists' biographies and an exhibition checklist. "Miles Davis's seminal recording "Birth of the Cool" is the starting point for this colorful, multi-disciplinary exhibition that examines the broad cultural zeitgeist of "cool" that influenced the visual arts, graphic and decorative arts, architecture, music, and film produced in California in the 1950s and early 1960s. The widespread influences of such midcentury architects and designers as Harry Bertoia, Charles and Ray Eames, John Lautner, and Richard Neutra, have been well-documented. Less well-known, however, are the innovations of a group of Hard-Edge painters working during this period including Karl Benjamin, Lorser Feitelson, Fredrick Hammersley, Helen Lundberg and John McLaughlin, whose work retains a freshness and relevance today. "Birth of the Cool" revisits this scene, providing a visual and cultural context for West Coast geometric abstract painting within the other dynamic art forms of this time such as interior design, cartoons, and experimental film". A pristine copy of the first edition of this invaluable historical reference still in the publisher's shrinkwrap.
