Cohen, Arthur A. & Trevor Winkfield. EX LIBRIS 4: OMNIUM GATHERUM. New York. ND (circa 1976).: Ex Libris, First Edition. 4to. Printed Wrappers. Bookseller's Catalogue. Near Fine. np (74pp), no illustrations. New York's Arthur Cohen was the premier purveyor of books and ephemera on twentieth century Modern Art movements for nearly twenty years. Ex Libris' copiously researched, scholarly, illustrated catalogues stood as unparalleled bibliographic tools at a time when there was a paucity of available reference to the documentary literature of the modernist avant-gardes. Catalogue number four features nine hundred and forty-six fully described and indexed original works, photographs, posters, books, periodicals, pamphlets, and printed ephemera on the subjects of Ancient Art and Civilization, Architecture, Art History and Aesthetics, Art Nouveau and Jugendstil, Books on Books: Typography, Printing, Design, Dada and Surrealism, Expressionism, Film, Dance & Music, Literature of the Modern Movement, Movements of 19th Century Art, Movements of 20th Century Art, Periodicals and Annuals, Pre-Columbian Art and Culture, and Tribal Arts: Africa and the South Pacific. And while at the time of its 1976 publication the prices here seemed astronomical, thirty some odd years later they are finally downright bargains! A handsome copy of this uncommon reference. Heppner, F. Nigel. PHARAOH'S FLOWERS: THE BOTANICAL TREASURES OF TUTANKHAMUN. London: Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew & HMSO, 1990. First Edition. 8vo. Illustrated Wrappers. Exhibition Catalog. Fine. 80pp, profusely illustrated in color and b&w. "The golden face of Tutankhamun was garlanded with fresh flowers, exquisitely preserved in his innermost coffin after three thousand years. In the tomb were one hundred and sixteen baskets, most containing offerings of seeds and food, left there for use in the afterlife. Wine jars and beautiful alabaster perfume vases contained products fit for a king; thrones and stools were made of ebony and cedar of Lebanon, while model ships were equipped with linen sails. A delightful model of a granary was found full to the brim with seeds - emmer wheat, fenugreek and chick-pea - and brooms of reed and grass used to tidy up after the burial remain intact. All these botanical treasures can help us to unravel the civilization of Ancient Egypt. The author describes the items found in Tutankhamun's tomb - such as willow, papyrus, mandrake, waterlilies, oils and resins, and many more - as well as their use in botanical designs. Fully illustrated, each chapter carries detailed descriptions of the plant species found or represented in the tomb, including aspects of their history and cultivation". A pristine copy. 0-11-250040-4 Inventory Number: 013391

Puaux, Rene. GRECE: TERRE AIMEE DES DIEUX. Paris: G. De Malherbe & Cie., 1932. First Edition 1/400. Small Folio. Illustrated Wrappers. Good +. 124pp, profusely illustrated in sepia gravure and color. Text in French. Limited to four hundred copies only, this lovely 1932 French language survey of primarily nineteenth and early twentieth century Greek history and culture by noted hellenophile Rene Puaux is brimming with lovely gravure reproductions of photographs as well as color lithographs. A most presentable example of this uncommon item showing a bit of overall creasing, soiling, and chipping to its fragile paper wrappers. The interior and textblock are sound and quite bright but for a smattering of light foxing throughout - primarily along the foredge borders. Some of the color plates are spotted on the margins and/or tissue overlays, but the exquisite images themselves remain fresh and bright. It has been priced accordingly.
