(RUSCHA,
EDWARD) (HOPPER, DENNIS).. EDWARD RUSCHA: FERUS GALLERY EXHIBITION POSTER
- DOUBLE STANDARD. Los Angeles: Ferus Gallery, 1964. First Edition. . .
Exhibition Poster. Very Good-. One sheet 13 x 10 inches printed recto only
(in black and green inks on white paper), folded in quarter for mailing.
This is the poster/announcement for Ruscha's second ever solo exhibition
at Irving Blum & Edward Keinholz's Ferus Gallery, illustrated with a
photograph by Dennis Hopper. The top half of the image is a 1961 view through
a windshield of Santa Monica and Melrose Avenues looking east entitled "Double
Standard"; a visual pun that coincided with this first exhibition of
Ruscha's "Gasoline Station" paintings. The bottom half has the
artist's name in bold, proto-Op Art lettering. This copy is flat, and in
generally nice condition. There are however fifteen tiny pinholes at various
locations throughout the top half, as well as a darkened brown area roughly
three inches square to the left of the rear view mirror (which blends rather
unobtrusively with the darkening sky). The edges of the poster show a slight
toning of age, and the lower right corner a small crinkle that has flattened
out over time. Considering how few of this ephemeral item probably survive
today, this is a rare opportunity to own a an extraordinary, iconic piece
of 60's Los Angeles art history.
